Bye Tyreke? Kings unlikely to offer max...

Tyreke does not deserve the max contract right now.

They are probably going to wait it out and match any offer given to him.

I don't see why does that mean he's gone.

I mean, I don't see anyone sane offering the kid a max or even close right now, do you? I think it's pretty clear we save our big bucks and our franchise player 5 year contract thing for DeMarcus - rightfully so - and we're gonna let the market dictate what's Tyrekes pricerange and see if it's worth it for us to match it. I'm sure won't be the max though.

Kid needs that jumpshot, it's that simple. and the very least he needs to shoot in the 35% range and not 25% which is just disgusting... he knows what's up and i'm sure he's not stupid. he's just not worth the max or close to it untill he does(while also needing to improove defensively aswell), and he won't get one either - if there's a team out there who's willing to give him one, good for them.

The article doesn't really say much of anything, so trying to read between the lines to jump to the "sky is falling" conclusion is really premature. Petrie has NEVER made public statements about salary/player issues and he never will.

Quite frankly, there's nothing to see here. Honestly.

Not too surprising with the way the new CBA is structured. Reke is not a franchise level guy yet and no one is going to pay him franchise level money.

Any decisions are over a year away. So I'm not going to worry about it now. Tyreke needs to make obvious improvements. If he does, he moves to the next level. If he doesn't, you pay him for what he's worth, and nothing more.

I love a good conspiracy. Play someone out of position, continually freeze him out, change his role...again, then low ball the guy.

That's assuming we can afford to offer what he is likely to get! ;)

I am not convinced that our owners have enough money to pay the players what they are worth especially on a long term deal.

I agree.. Try him at his natural position of SG for a year then we can decide..

Hope you got the humor in this but I was totally being serious lol. :)

Evans doesn't deserve max money anyway. We can't go offering max money to players on a team which is 4th worst in the league because we all forget that these players on this team is most of the reason we are 4th worst. Regarding DMC though we need him. He's a big man.. Good bigs and good PGs are hard to come by. Fill in the rest with whatever else until something clicks.

Yeah, I know your stance. It's all good. Either way, we want to see Evans maximize his potential. We can disagree on what that entails, but we want the same end. I'm assuming we can at least agree that SF was a bad idea?

What's the news? I can also tell you that the entire league is unlikely to offer max. His overall numbers are pretty pedestrian, he's not very efficient, hasn't shown much improvement and he doesn't score quickly enough to be a points in bunches player.

His draft stock slipped because no one could figure out his position and his coaches can't figure out his position, either. Can't distribute well enough as a pure point, can't shoot well enough to be a scoring guard, not big enough to be a good sf, and he's not jump-over-you-so amazingly-that-you-forget-all-of-these-flaws athletic.

If he doesn't get max extension, it will be Petrie's first good move in a while.

Yeah, because you always want the worst jump shooter on the team playing "shooting" guard.

People make that dumb argument so often I think we should go back to the old description of "off guard". Here are the starting shooting guards on the 3 best teams in the league/potential champions:

Thabo Sefalosha
Ronnie Brewer
Dwayne Wade

Wade is the only one who can shoot at all, and he notoriousl never has developed 3pt range.

Last year the title was won by a team starting DeShawn Stevensen at that spot, over Wade. The Wade team had just beat the Brewer team to get to the Finals. The Stevensen team had just beaten the Sefalosha team, who had beaten a team with Tony Allen at SG. Not a shootter amongst them.

SOMEBODY in your backcourt has to be able to shoot, but as the elite teams in the league have shown, your "shooting" guard does not have to be that guy.

P.S. BTW not wanting to offer Reke a max extension hardly means bye Reke as per the ratehr excitable title here. Only way that would mean bye Reke would be if somebody else WAS goinf ot offer him the max, and we would not match. But that won't come up until next summer, and in order for somebody else to offer him the max, he will have to have blown up next season, and if he does then we damn well better match a max offer. In any case, since Reke is not an unrestricted FA, or a FA at all this summer, and since us not offereing the max only matters if someody else IS willing to, this is just much ado about nto much.

Sefalosha is a starter, true. But everyone knows Harden is the guy that's in there when it counts. If you see Tyreke as a starter, but not an ender, then you've got a point. He could play two guard for a championship caliber Kings team in that limited capacity. His defense would have to get better, but he could do it. Wade is a light year away from Tyreke so it's not worth discussing. That leaves Brewer.

So Brewer shoots .308 between 3-9 feet, .370 between 10-15 feet, .331 16 ft to 3 pt line, and .275 for 3s. Tyreke shoots .333 between 3-9 feet, .262 between 10-15 ft., .291 between 16 ft and 3 pt line, and .213 for 3s. You're right. Brewer isn't much of an outside shooter. Unfortunately, Tyreke is quite a bit worse.

You beat me to it on this one. I agree, the term off guard is more appropiate. People get literally locked in to the verbal description of a position. I'll refer back to Doug Christie. He was never known for his shooting, but for his defensive abilities, and his ability to handle the ball, and pass the ball. If left open, Doug could certainly hit a shot, but when he came into the league, he basicly had no outside shot. At worse, I could see Tyreke being a rich mans Doug Christie. The question is, is that enough for him? We know he can handle and pass. We know he could be one of the best defenders in the league at the Off Guard position.

So my response to Tyreke would be. We think you would be great in this capacity. It up to you to prove you can be more than that. While there are some similarities between Wade and Sefalosha, there's also a wide gap between the two players. So which one is the real Tyreke? Which one does he want to be?

That's actually a reasonable comparison for Tyreke, except for the fact that Doug had range to 3pt when he was with us while Tyreke doesn't. He didn't take a lot, but his percentages were acceptable and he had to be guarded out there. Guys are playing behind Tyreke and packing hte paint when he's dribbling because they know exactly what's coming. Most successful roleplaying wings have 3pt ability because you want spacing and open 3 pt shooters when the defense ends up rotating.

As for off guard comparisons who can't shoot, notice the only one worth more than 4-5 mil a year (generously, in fact) is the guy who can take and make all kinds of midrange shots. So yes, Tyreke isn't trash. His skills are useful right now in certain situations. But is that wanted out of your ROY? Is that good value for a 4th pick? Is that acceptable for a 4th pick, where there more "pure" players were available? In that draft, with his size, his skillset, his innate ability to score inside, with his size, he could be a groundbound Wade, a more athletic Rock, a more attacking JJ, Roy.

As for dumb arguments, one of the most asinine is taking a championship team with a roleplayer in the position, then infer that X player only need be as good as that player. Yes, Tyreke can be all the Thabo he wants if we have Westbrook and Durant. But, we don't. Tyreke was supposed to be our Westbrook/Durant. The heat are one of the best teams in the league and their center is Joel Anthony, an undersized big who puts up 3 points and 4 rebs. Let's ship Cousins out so we can get a Joel Anthony type player instead. Nonsense.

Thabo has Westbrook, perrenial All star next to him, and James Harden, one of the smartest players and should win 6th Man this year

Brewer had the MVP next to him. I think we can stop these types of myopic position comparisons.

I certainly agree with your assessment of the Thunder. But to my mind its apples and oranges. We have to forget where Tyreke was drafted, or what our expectations were, based on his rookie year. We have to deal with who he is as a player right now, and how that may or may not fit into our future. Everything else is irrelevant. To go around saying he should be better than he is because he was ROY and we drafted him in the fourth slot, is nothing more than an exercise in futility.

Tyreke is what he is right now, and he's not what some think he should be! Now that could all change. But in the last two years, it hasn't changed much. Yes, there have been some improvements, but none that were dramatic. None that made you stand up and say WOW! And the lack of change in some of the important areas have overshadowed the improvements. But lets be honest. The skills that won him rookie of the year are still there. He's still a terrific talent. Right now, he's at a crossroad. The league has figured him out, and he hasn't responded. And that folks is what separates great players from good players. This may be the most important offseason of Tyreke's career. Its time to respond!

The good news, is that Tyreke has to know that next year is going to be HUGE for his NBA future. Especially from a contractual standpoint. He stands to potentially loose millions of dollars with another mediocre season. He's going to give it his all to try to regain his former status, and get that payday that every player wants. Hopefully Smart (or whoever is coach), will start him, and run everything thru him, and make it the Tyreke Evans show. Kings need to be "all in" on Tyreke prior to the trade deadline. Certainly, Petrie needs to entertain all offers for Reke, cause we need to keep all options open, but right now, Reke is the one that needs to do something. He has to hope to get starting minutes at the point and some backup minutes at SG.

Isaiah apears to be a decent option as our point guard of the foreseeable future, but for the good of the team we need to bring him off the bench. Reke needs to play point, whether it's his natural position or not. Whether he's a "real' point guard or not. That is his spot. Playing him in any other position is just shooting yourself in the foot. He's not a small forward, and we have a diamond in the rough in MT. MT needs his minutes. I know he's selfish, but I love a SG that is overly aggressive like him. He takes it to the rack with authority and you gotta love that about Marcus. Reke needs to start at point, and then when he gets a breather, Thomas comes in. Thomas runs the point for a few minutes, then Reke replaces MT. Rinse and Repeat. Let's give Evans huge minutes at the point next year, as the starter, give him minutes at the off guard. Let's showcase him while he's still a usable asset for the team. It's absolutely unforgivable for the Kings not to make every opportunity to pump up Reke's league-wide value prior to next years trade deadline. Absolutely UNFORGIVABLE.

And.... if by some strange reason Reke finally puts it all together, then yeah, give him a really nice offer. (I'm not sure about max tho, need to save that for DMC and Anthony Davis :) )

If he puts it all together, he'll get the max. I wouldn't worry about DMC. We're pretty far under the cap. And by pretty far, I mean we can max Evans and DMC and still have enough left over for a pretty nice team (taking cheap ownership out of the equation.)

Tyreke deserves max right now only if you are paying him on potential. But with the current economy, not very many teams are doing that anymore.

Of all the teams that have cap space, I only see teams like NJ Nets willing to overpay just to get a "Star" if they strike out on other pursuits. In that case, the Kings SHOULD just make the qualifying offer and max any salary in the future. The worse that can happen is they have to match max.

ALSO, not giving Tyreke an early max extension will really be a wake up call for him. Its either you live up to you potential or you will be one of the "could have been" guys. Tyreke really needs to stop allowing his bros to schedule all his workouts and training. Its time to step up as a man and work with coach Smart about what needs to be done to improve his game. I'm just not sure how his brothers can know more about bball development than the pros.

How dare you say the "blueprint" doesn't work!

NJ would be a concern, eventually. It's close to home, and they have an owner willing to spend. Although I wouldn't want to be back near Chester if I were Evans.

If they want to throw max at Tyreke given his body of work thus far, go right ahead.

The Bee reports that Evans agent is in town talking with GP and kings management

http://blogs.sacbee.com/sports/kings/archives/2012/04/the-morning-aft-62.html

My understanding was that his agent was most interested in if the Kings were going to persist in trying to make a SF out of Tyreke. It's a good question. As I suspect the agent is speaking for Tyreke, it means Tyreke is unhappy. Why shouldn't he be? Why doesn't this self described expert at training guards train Tyreke to be a better guard? It's a tad early to give up and if I were Tyreke, I'd want to play elsewhere.

***** about Tyreke all you wish but an unhappy Tyreke is not exactly who we want on this team.

Its about time this got bought to the forefront. We need a working plan here. Even if Smart remains our coach GP can ensure reke is moved to the 2 spot.

Show smart his own dam quotes on how reke isnt a SF

He's unhappy. There's a quote in the Bee from about a month back from Reke about playing SF,and as Brick brought up then, it's the closest things to a public complaint you'll hear from Reke.

Then, you have his brothers, who I want to point out have been extremely professional on twitter. But, if you look at the tweets the reply to, with a simple "good question" or "good point", a lot of them regard Reke being completely misused. So you also have his brothers acknowledging it publicly, in probably the most professional way possible.

Then Art Tellem comes to town.

I'd also wager it isn't just Reke, but MT has looked pretty pissed a few times as well with constantly having his mins/role/# of shots jerked around, or being iced by both his coach or IT even when he lights it up in the 1st.

Something else I'll just mention. No doubt there was progress at point for Reke many of us saw when Smart first took over, but apparently the "expert", being Smart, didn't see it and moved him to SF. Then IT took over at point, and played well, BUT, is not running the offense anywhere near as well as he was.

Really think the ROY crap got to his head. Now he's pounding the ball as much or more than Reke ever did, with less success, while freezing out everyone not named Cuz/Travis/Chuck, and we're winning at a worse rate than either year under Westy.
