The draft is quickly approaching us and I've been thinking that since a lot of us have the notion that it will be hard to get one of the top free agents to sign with us that maybe we should use some of our cap space to buy a mid to late first round pick. You have teams like New Orleans who are cash strapped, Miami who wants to dump beasely and maybe their pick to free up space for two max free agents and a few other teams out there posturing for free agents. Would you guys like to see the Kings try to add to the young nucleus and buy up one or two first round picks this year or look for a splash in free agency?

The only cap space room it takes up is the players' contract. If the Maloofs are willing to spend the money, then why not.

I'd love to aquire another first round pick somewhere in the middle of the first round. Teams are allowed to pay up to 3 mil for a first round pick. I don't see the Kings doing it unless a player they really like is sitting there at the time. That would mean that it would have to be prearranged. The 3 mil wouldn't affect our cap space, only the Maloof's pocketbook. However the salary of the additional pick would count against our cap space. It wouldn't be that much though. In the middle of the round it would probably come to around 1.7 mil or so. Maybe less. Just guessing. Too lazy to go look it up right now.

Yeah another pick mid first round would be great but because of the way this draft is that's a nice spot for most teams to be in. There are several coveted players that are for various reasons considered not to be worthy of an earlier pick that should be available mid first rnd including those wing players- Babbit, George and Hayward. What about a package that included our second rnd pick?

I believe the OP was proposing that we take on someone's garbage in exchange for their pick, so not a case of buying in the truest sense of the words, but that's what it is.

I'd prefer not going that route because we run the risk of having another Noc or KT on our hands. If we can't make a big time signing let's play the season out and see what we have and address next season after the new CBA is in place and we also have Sammy's contract off the books. Unless we only have to take back a guy who is expiring next season, then I'm cool with it.

Agreed with this, and we might have that possibility.. A lot of teams last season were in cost cutting mode... There figures to be more of that before the season begins I suspect. There are some expirings that I'm sure teams would rather have off the roster this season then next and I wouldn't mind taking on a contract this year and aquiring another draft pick as the price to do it. 2011 offseason is what we assume will be our year for a FA so we might as well make some moves this season that won't hurt our 2011 cap and pick up a late lottery/mid 1st draft pick. I would probably prefer go this route then have money and spend it on a mediocre/over paid FA of this class year...

Don't think I've ever seen Petrie go after another 1st rounder in this manner and I don't see the Maloofs opening up the pocket book for one anytime soon.

I made the mistake of voting before I read the original post.

I'd definitely be in favor of buying draft picks this year, I think it's usually a good idea.

I'm not very interested in taking on unspecified garbage contracts in order to draft unspecified additional players, nor does Beasley + the 18th pick sound exciting to me.

I agree. I'm fine with buying a pick. But I don't want any garbage from another team.

I meant a little bit of both. Outright buying a pick in the mid round which will cost us the max 3 Million dollars or as I proposed taking a flyer on a player such as Beasely and getting Miami's pick as well. Personally that's what I'd like to see happen even though I know people don't like Beasely talent is talent and we need all we can get around Tryeke.

Something like Daquan cook, Michael Beasely and #18 for #33 and our cap space. The Heat pick for us and the Kings pick for the heat.

This frees up like 9 million for the heat to go after a 3rd max free agent and the Kings get two useful, expiring deals while moving up in the draft.

Looks like a win-win.

There was that rumor of taking brand for the 2nd pick, turner. That would set us up greatly if we nabbed DC at 5 but we would be financially screwed for a few seasons. Not sure how his contract works out but if he expires around the time we need to resign our youngsters it could be an option.

Considering we just traded with Philly though theres basically no chance of this going through

Hmmm... I really like this, but how would this go over in Heatland? Have you posted this up at the other place to see they're reaction?

...now that I think of it though, if Petrie drafted Cousins the last thing he would need is Beasley stirring things up...
