Bucks Trade Jefferson to Spurs for Oberto, Bowen, Thomas

I like this deal for the Spurs - it hurts their frontcourt depth but adding a big-time wing scoring threat should help them out. Perhaps they start playing Mahinmi more. It's either that or dump out another MLE for a big man, since it looks like Splitter is under contract in Europe for another year.

For the Bucks? I guess it's all about salary reduction and getting Alexander PT. At this point I think Alexander flops, but they can probably save enough to bring Sessions back (and they won't have to go after Villanueva as hard -- if at all -- with Oberto on board). Of course, all signs have pointed to them drafting a Holiday/Flynn/Jennings level point, as well. That's a crowded PG spot. Maybe they try to jump in the fray for Clark/Johnson/T-Will instead? I'm not so high on this trade from the Bucks side, but it does save cash. They'd better hope Redd is ready to go next year, though, or they'll really struggle.

Wow, this puts the Spurs back in the front half of the West IMO. Pairing Jefferson with Duncan, Manu and Parker is going to be very dangerous and not many teams will be able to match up with them.

Spurs definitely back in hunt--they were really looking for that dynamic SF even extending to last offseason--remember that they tried to get Corey Maggette and Vince Carter, and now they've found a willing seller in return for their aging junk. I do think that Bowen and maybe Kurt Thomas might take buyouts with the Bucks and return to the Spurs, because face it--veteran players who have experienced success at that level don't have much use for a mediocre team--so this really helps the Spurs.

As for Milwaukee, this really really helps them too in resigning one of those free agents--for some reason, I got the feeling they didn't seem to like either Sessions or Villanueva and were willing to let them go (they were even trying to draft Sessions' replacement with their 10th pick, like Jonny Flynn or something). As an aside--those Bucks seem to hate their very good PGs don't they? Ever since 2003, they've gotten rid of Sam Cassell, TJ Ford, Mo Williams, and perhaps now Sessions--and it's not any of those players are really trash. But now, getting Jefferson's $13mil or so off the books, and several of those players can be bought out to save even more money. So I'm presuming they're going to resign Sessions now (right John Hammond?), which is unfortunate for teams wanting him, which could potentially include us.

I can see them shifting their attention to Clark maybe.

Good trade for the Spurs. Duncun doesn't have many more good yrs left so they need to get help now. RJ makes the Spurs starting line up one of the most deadly threats in the league. They just need to get 1 or 2 more big men to help Duncun out.

They lost one of their staple pieces of "Spurs Basketball" who will be their shutdown defender now? Bowen is gone

this is a good trade for the spurs. if they use their mle on a decent bigman they'll be a good team again.

Hmm interesting it seems that the Bucks will Cut Bowen and Oberto, Bowen back to the Spurs it looks like

Yeah they lost one of their staples, but as others have said - Bowen isn't the defender he used to be.

Also, if they try too hard to hold on to that era, then they are going to be in a world of hurts very very soon. This trade was very good for them.

---

But anyways, it looks like they'll be able to resign him. But they have to not be afraid to move those pieces if it calls for it.

If the Bucks buy Bowen out -and I expect them to- then he might just as well return to San Antonio for a final tour. Wouldn't surprise me a bit. Wonder if they'll resign Gooden though, and if they do, for what conditions.

This may effect our thinking going into this draft if Sessions was a consideration.

And nice trade by the Spurs -- Milwaulkee did gt what it needed (salary relief, albeit at the cost of one of their main peices), but the Spurs did the seeming impossible and took a pile of useless old garbage and turned it into one more semi-impact player to keep the door ajar for them.

it would be interesting if TIAGO SPLITTER were to join them this year.

Wait a minute....

I proposed a trade a couple months ago suggesting we could trade KT and this summer's cap space for Richard Jefferson because it would give the Bucks cap room to resign guys and everyone on here just said I was full of crap to think that Milwaukie would ever do that.

How is this trade any better for Milwaukie than that one?

(I realize we would have had to convince Milwaukie to wait until next month, but still...)

And then the Bucks flip Oberto for Amir Johnson. Good move for the Bucks--Oberto's old, growing quite useless and has little use on a mediocre team, and now they can capitalize on a player I've been high on in the past (with his rebounding, shotblocking ability and athleticism) in Johnson.

Good move for the Spurs. Now, if they follow up by signing a Gortat or even a Sheed they'll be set for another final run or two.

What on earth is Joe Dumars doing? First he turns down Hamilton/Prince/Stuckey for Ray Allen and Rondo and now this move. He doesn't seem to be into rebuilding much does he? I hope he spends all of that FA money on Ron Artest, might as well get a good laugh out of it.

Actually Jefferson is one of the better small forward defenders in the league. I remember him on the Nets, he just harasses opponents in isolation situations.

As for Bowen, his minutes were severely cut last season and his overall impact has become negligible.

The savvy Spurs once again make a great move - they are already the biggest threat to the Lakers in the western conference.
