Bucks to sign Bobby Simmons ?

ESPN is reporting that Bobby Simmons (formerly of the Clippers) will sign a 5 year, $47 million offer with the Bucks. I'm a bit confused at this signing, unless the Bucks have something in the works for a solid PF by trading Desmond Mason and some other talent. Mason and Simmons seem to be duplicative talent to me, and wonder why the Bucks would offer Simmons so much money. This after paying the max for Redd. What's in the cheese and/or beer in Wisconsin these days?

okay, ive made a conclusion...

the bucks gm has gone crazy from picking Bogut...inexplainable, but evidentally he believes if he makes insane moves, Bogut will want to stay longer and they will win the championship

any insight anyone? anyoone feel like speculating a possiblilyt of getting mason for mobley or some crap like that?

I think this means the clippers will look into mobley more. maybe a mobley/peja for brand trade.

Well, I know they haven't really been happy with Mason as a starter and would ratehr he be a 6th man, so I suspose its just a talent addition. Despite being bad, with Bogut coming, Redd returning, and Ford suposedly getting past his injury, guess they have a fairly complete lineup if they add simmons and resign their two bigs. Ford, Redd, Simmons, Smith, Bogut starters; Gadzuric, Mason etc. as backups.

But the Bucks are on record (sorry it was awhile ago so I can't post a link) as preferring Desmond Mason as a sixth man. You're right on though that both of them are basically 2 guards playing out of position at SF.

It seems like winning the #1 pick has filled the Bucks management with championship aspirations. Throwing all that money at Redd and Simmons may seem like craziness, but maybe they think they're ready to make a move now. Well, it's still craziness.

EDIT: Simul-post. Good point about TJ Ford coming back. Maybe they do have enough talent to make a run.

The problem is that the Clippers don't need to do a sign and trade to get Cat. They can just sign him outright, which would suck. Here's hoping he would still rather play for the Nuggets, or just about anybody but the Clippers, and that that will be a last resort for him.

oh, guess i packed a little to much in the pipe for that dream. yes then, mobley to the nuggets, nene to the kings. ok mobley, I'm in L.A., its not that nice here, lotta smog, traffic, crime etc. you'd be better suited in denver.

I can't see the Clippers not matching this deal for Simmons (a guy they've said they like) and then doling out a similar deal for Mobley. Cuttino is going to demand a deal starting at 6 or 7 million dollars.

The Bucks need a rugged PF to pair up with Bogut, but I think they still have a decent shot at the playoffs next season. Ford showed a lot of promise before his spine problems and although I have my doubts about Bogut, he IS a decent compliment for Redd. Simmons as a starter and Gadzuric as a temporary solution at the PF gives them a decent starting lineup. Mo Williams is not great as a starter, but I like him as a backup to Ford and Mason is a nice wing off the bench.

I could see them as a 7th or 8th seed next season if they can stay healthy and Bogut is moderately productive in the post.

But if you think about the Clippers by going after Mobley might force the hand of the Nuggets and they will be more willing to trade Nene to us. They could see it that they might lose out in getting Mobley to Clippers and seeing the only to get him is a sign and trade because LA could offer him more.

That's true. This might make Denver even more willing to make a deal instead of waiting. Starting SGs are disappearing from the FA market at a rapid rate right now.

There's also the impending dismissal of Finley from Dallas though.

That's a good pickup by the Bucks. They look like they're building towards playoff contention next season. Simmons is an excellent fit at SF there, they need his perimeter scoring and Desmond Mason is more effective coming off the bench and not having to play against bigger SFs all the time.

Simmons going to Milwaukee is not good for the Kings. If Denver really doesn't want to part with Nene then I see no point in swinging a trade with them. Denver could easily go out and pick up Finley who is all but officially done in Dallas. I keep hearing that Phoenix and Chicago will make a run at Finley, but in both of those places I don't see him starting (Joe Johnson and Ben Gordon), but he would start in Denver. I have a feeling that something is going to come down real soon though. It seems as though the free agent market has gone from 0-60 mph in no time.

I have a bit of a bias towards Mason (as he played at Ok. St. when I watched a fair number of their games), and I'm too lazy to look up his salary info., but I can't imagine he's happy with this demotion.

One interesting note: Simmons pulls down almost 6 rebounds per game to Mason's 4, so there's one reason why the Bucks probably aren't happy with him starting at SF. A guy with Mason's athleticism should be pulling down at least 6 boards per game at SF.

That's always been the thing about Mason -- supreme athlete, but if you look at his stats, he just has never done anything else other than use that athleticism to score. Very one-dimensional, and with the physical skills that he should not be.

I'm going to wait out annointing Bogut as part of a "hell of a team" until I see his extremely middling athleticism in some live NBA games. I don't want the guy to fail or anything, but I'm not convinced from the limited footage I've seen of him that he has the athleticism to truly succeed as a #1 pick in the NBA. It's not like he's got Yao size or anything to make up for his relative lack of athleticism.

People want him to be a low post/dominate inside player, but from what i seen he looks like a Brad Miller type of player , he can operate from the high post, he has nice hands and shot, his passing is clean and on the spot..... if they run the ball through him, with Redd, Mason and Simmons... i think they can do some damage in the east..

He's actually a good post player, making him more of a Vlade (the standard comparison with him) than a Brad. Its really unfortunate we could not make a move on him, because on paper at least, he was the ideal young center to continue on our frontcourt passing system.
