Brown putting Nate and Lee into regular S5..

All-Star
NY Post - Coach Larry Brown announced it's time to sink or swim with their three first-round rookies, even if it means sacrificing wins. The biggest shocker? David Lee will become the new permanent starting small forward — the vacuum position on the roster.
For the second time in three weeks, Brown said he's ready to pare his rotation to nine men and establish a set starting lineup that will include two rookies — Nate Robinson at shooting guard and David Lee at small forward.
If the Knicks are going to lose, they might as well lose with the young guys. The Knicks, who face the Suns and old friend Kurt Thomas tonight, are tied for the NBA's worst record at 7-21 with Atlanta. The tragedy is their potential No. 1 pick was dealt to the Bulls in the Eddy Curry trade.
"I've talked to Isiah [Thomas] about this for weeks," Brown said. "We're 7-21. We might as well play some of the younger kids, get down to a shorter rotation and give those kids some experience. How our season is going, the most important thing is to play them."
Brown has used a ridiculous 19 different starting lineups in 28 games and usually plays all 12 players.
"I never done that my whole life," Brown said. "I'm trying to figure out who to play. I've always been comfortable with eight or nine and that's eventually what we're going to have to do."
The Knicks' newly acquired busts, center Jerome James and shooting guard Quentin Richardson (who will miss tonight's game with a sore back against his old club), likely will be out of the rotation, as will Malik Rose.
Brown said Jackie Butler, 20, could be the new backup center over James.
"He's going to have to play better and show me that in practice," Brown said of James.
Brown will keep bringing rookie Channing Frye off the bench and leave Antonio Davis as the starting power-forward because Frye still struggles defensively.
"I never expected Nate and [Lee] and Channing in our top 7-8 guys, and that's how it's going to be," Brown said.
Lee's emergence was long overdue. Brown blew it by deactivating him seven straight games last month. The goal is to convert him into a small forward since Frye is the club's power forward of the future.
"David's got to learn to play the 3," Brown said. "It's not going to be easy for him. I like his energy. He got 12 rebounds [in Orlando]. We got to get him to improve offensively."

Very interesting, indeed. I dig it, more Nate!

With Lee, I thought it was just a matter of time before Lee became a starter, based off his good pre-season.

Not really a surprise with Jerome James. Though I did expect him to play better since the early injury with his new, wild contract.

LB has gone small before (Snow and Iverson) but this is bordering on ridiculous.

Imagine Robinson or Marbury trying to defend Bonzi on the blocks. One of them will have to. And with Richardson out, Crawford is their main option off the bench at guard. He's too light to avoid being posted up too.

I like Lee, but I'm wondering what kind of perimeter skills he has. He seemed like an athletic and energetic (if undersized) PF to me.

$124 million in salary and the Knicks are starting two late 1st round picks (21st & 30th) and bringing a 3rd rookie off the bench as the sixth or seventh man?

Doesn't seem like much bang for your buck, now does it?

For some reason I keep thinking about Whoopi Goldberg and "Eddie."

;)

On offense, Nate/Marbury will be fine, on defense? Nate's a good defender, but the size factor will always be there. Marbury I don't know much about his d, but it seems to be a bit improved this season.

Lee's really a PF at 6'9" 240/245, but from what I've seen he's good and pretty quick on defense, and he can hit the mid-range jumper.

that team has alot more talent then what there record shows thats sad that they are only 7-21. and im shocked that richardson is out of the rotation he must really be struggling with the sytem. he does much better with teams that can score and run up and down like the suns. maybe the kings can go after him.

center Jerome James has been suspended due to conduct detrimental to the team for an indefinite period. Yesterday, he was unprepared to practice.

He was unprepared to practice? Does that mean still drunk or with a hangover so bad the bouncing of the ball caused him to scream in agony? Or did he forget his clothes and show up with a wardrobe malfunction?

I love train wrecks...

;)

Interesting idea. It's easier to win in a trade if you're going after a player that may be undervalued in the current system and can get him for cheap. He showed signs of decent defense last year in Pheonix. But then again, his contract isn't great, and was last year just a fluke based on Nash and the Suns' system?

YES...Richardson is a VERY mediocre player. Steve Nash simply MAKES PLAYERS BETTER. And that's why he was MVP last season. Look what he's doing with this year's Suns. Very few people on this board expected the Suns to be where they are right now.

I did, of course...;)

i think his contract matches pejas but im not sure. if it does i would do it because new york said they really want a smallforward. im sure we can get even more from new york if we offer peja not just Q.

Richardson has had a rough season in a lot of regards. currently, I believe he's suffering from back spasms, but I'm sure that doesn't matter to him much right now as basketball is still probably in the back of his mind. Richardson's brother was shot and killed during a robbery a few weeks ago. He took a week off from the team, but has understandably not played well since his return.

Even before the tragedy, Richardson was struggling in New York. Most likely because Larry Brown was looking for him to fill their hole at SF. Richardson is a great post up threat at the SG spot, and the move probably hurt his game. As noted in the article, Brown has changed his starting lineup almost nightly, which also makes it difficult to settle into a rhythm with your teammates.

I like Quentin Richardson, but I don't want the Kings persuing him. He's duplicative of what Bonzi Wells brings, albeit with a better touch from outside.

If the Kings are going to make a trade, I think they need and athletic/defensive frontcourt player much more than another scoring wing.

Maybe Brad Miller should be in the running for MVP. He makes guys look fantastic.

After all, it was Brad who let Jerome James go off for 17.2 ppg, 9.4 rpg and 2.2 bpg during the Seattle series, netting him a 5 year, 30 million dollar deal. . .

Actually, Richardson had a better year his last year with the Clippers (PPG, everything else is similar). What everybody remembers was all the 3's he made. His 3 point shooting- attempts and made- doubled, even though his shooting percentage stayed pretty much the same, playing similar minutes.

I think Diaw needs to give half of his pay check to Nash because he sure as hell made a player out of him.

Indeed, even if a 3OT. He still had like 20+ and 16-18 ast before the OTs.

One really cool point in that game was in the 1st OT when House and Nash hit back-to-back triples, with the crowd in a frenzy and both happened in pushing-tempo fashion, and they chest bumped after Nash's as a TO was called.

At the risk of hijaking this thread, I disagree. While he clearly benefited from having Marion and Amare, there's no doubt in my mind that Nash is responsible for making a lot of players better (Richardson, Diaw, Bell, etc).
