HATTIESBURG, Miss -- Three days after a conference call with Green Bay Packers team officials on Tuesday in which quarterback Brett Favre emphatically expressed his desire to play in 2008, Favre on Friday formally asked for his contractual release from the Packers in a letter, sources close to Favre and the team said.

The letter was sent by Favre's agent, James "Bus" Cook, via overnight mail on Thursday and arrived at the Packers facility Friday morning.

Brett Favre is turning into an utter tool.

Grow up. Retire. I WILL boo you if you return to the league playing for a team other than the Packers. When has that ever worked out fool? When has that ever been anything but a travesty sullying the memories of the player while he was on top? Actually if I were another owner I would absolutely refuse to hire him rather than be that last sad comeback team.

Maybe he would consider coming on board with the Kings and playing a little PG? He's 6'2" and weighs 222lbs (38 years old, though)... as long as we are using a "Pass first" offense, he should be effective. Right? ;)

The other story to come out says that Green Bay will not release him. Since they have gone forward with Aaron Rodgers as their starter and drafted 2 QB's this year...they said Favre would be welcomed back.......as a back-up for Rodgers!! :D

Please get over yourself Brett and retire already...for the last time.

I guess if you're just looking for someone to inbound the ball across the court for an alley-oop.

It's tough when you can't stop what you love to do. It's like saying you have all these friends that you never get to see again. That being said, the Favre era should be over.

Although rethinking that point, it may be easier for Rodgers to play with all the attention drawn to Favre elsewhere. Unless Favre has a pro-bowl year. It could go either way, I suppose.

Joe Montana's run with KC wasn't exactly a stain on his legacy. It was a sad end to his career for 49ers fans though.

But I otherwise agree with you, this will not work out well.

Get over yourself Favre. It's time to let go. Don't make a fool of yourself and hurt your fans in Green Bay. They don't deserve this.

Comparing Montana to Favre is apples to oranges.

Brett should stay retired. Don't force the Packers to release him.

Does anyone know what the cap hit would be if they released him?

I was responding to Brick's comment that a legend can't go play for another team once he is past his prime, and the only legendary QB that I can remember switching teams in my lifetime was Montana. I've always had a bone to pick with Favre's "legendary" status and where he ranks against the true great QBs, but that's for another thread.

It doesn't just apply to football. Think Ewing, Hakeem etc. in the NBA.

And Montana almost does not count, because his time with the Niners was cut artificially short because of Steve Young's emergence. Asking him to hang it up at...32? 33? Forget how old he was, was not entirely reasonable. Asking a 40 yr old to finally grow up and become an adult is not.

Favre is 38 and Montana was 37 when he left the 49ers.

To expound upon my fruit related comment from before, Montana was coming off an injury, and Steve Young played great the previous year. Neither of those things are the case with Favre.

I understand the situations are different, regardless its the only time that I recall in my lifetime it involving a QB of Brett Favre's stature.

I'm certainly not sticking up for the guy.

Favre is playing a game. He's done this for a couple years now. I feel bad for Aaron Rodgers (Sactown guy) who's been groomed this offseason to be the starter and to possibly have this yanked from him is not fair to him or the fans. I'm not a Packers fan so really I should care less, but something is not right with all of this. Favre's had a great career, but enough of this flip-flopping and game playing on the retirement. If I were Aaron Rodgers and Favre was going to start this season after I worked hard over the offseason in preparation to be the starter, I would demand to be traded.

Surely you mean CHICO guy...

:p

Other than that minor detail, I completely agree with you.
