Brandon Bass

I was reading espn.com's story on 'players who could be on the move' and saw that Brandon Bass (Orlando) is on the list. A 6'8" power forward who's just 24 years old. LOVE the guy. Signed a 4 year 16 million dollar deal with Orlando and isn't playing much. Averaging 8 points and 3 boards a game in limited time. His numbers would be a whole lot better if he saw the floor more (see his Dallas stats). This is a guy that can grow with the young nucleus we have in place. The Kings need frontcourt help, there aren't a lot of great centers out there and KT is on his way out. Okafor's contract is way too steep for me. Sooo....

TO KINGS:
Brandon Bass
Orlando's 1st round pick in 2010 draft

TO MAGIC:
Kenny Thomas (expiring)
Sacramento's 2nd round pick in 2010 draft

I have no idea if we can get better value for KT but if we can swap picks with the Magic (late 1st round for sure) that would sure help. With this trade, Orlando would have two second round picks. Doesn't work in the espn trade machine yet because Bass can't be dealt until December 15th.

Thoughts?

I like Brandon Bass. He's another in the current fashion trend toward undersized but quick PF's. I only have two problems with this deal. One is that his contract, although not that big at 4 mil a year, runs for three more years after this one. So there's a fair commitment there. The other is that by making this trade, were also giving up any future cap space we might have for the next offseason.

As much as I like Bass, what we really need is a backup, or, if the right deal comes along, a current starting center to push Hawes. Now if you can figure out a way to get Bass and a center, then I'm fine with it..:)

I agree that ideally we would want a center but I'm not sure if taking on 10 million in salary per year (Okafor) would be worth it. I like the contract Bass has and I think JT can play some minutes at center while Bass is in which would put some pressure on Spencer to perform.

I don't remember mentioning Okafor in my post. I did say the right deal. Which deal is the right deal is subjective I suspose. However, I agree that the combination you suggest could work at times. But we still need a big defensive minded center at some point.

Absolutely.

Bass doesn't seem at all necessary to me. We have a glut of forwards as it is, and the only reason Bass's name carries any weight is because he got to play on some stacked Mavs teams. I'd rather have KT's expiring then sink a couple of years into a guy who's not gonna help us all that much. And Orlando's pick is way less value than we can get for the expriing

Bass is just an undersized scorer. If we could pick him up without burning a major asset -- Noc or something -- sure. But our major assets need to get us a BIG DEFENSIVE big man. Not a little offensive minded one. We aren;t losing games because we can't score, we're losing them because we can't stop anybody. Bass does not help on that front.

If Brandan Bass is all we can get for KT's expiring contract then I would rather keep KT thanks!

This trade is just making a trade for the sake of it!

i wouldnt mind gortat, but like bass his contract is too damn long... though it isnt that much per year.

I'd so much rather take Marcin Gortat (who's also on the list) than Bass. Gortat is a full size PF/C who is much more defensive minded than Bass.

Although his contract is five-year, $34 million, I think it's still worth it. He's only 25 years old.

Double K? You back too?

I knew Reke was something special, but maybe not just HOW special -- he apparently has the power to find the long lost and raise the dead. :p

Let me just quote you, because it also sums up all my thoughts about the trade proposal.

What's wrong with these people proposing trading our assets for some players we don't even need right now?

Don't they see what we're obviously lacking in this team?

Bass is a decent player, but I wouldnt really want him on our team. He just doesnt fit what we need in a big man.

I would mind going after Gortat, even though I think he is a little over paid. If we could dump Noch on the Magic .. or even Beno for Gortat ( with Nelson injured again ) I would think about it.

Like many here, I think Bass is a good player, but quite honestly, I don't think we should be rushing to fill our bench when the team (still) clearly needs an upgrade in starting-5 talent. Furthermore, the team really needs an interior defender with size.

While Westphal has done a great job at getting everyone to play to their max (well, maybe except Spencer), the Kings still need a player that will put us over the top - thus, save the $$$.

Haha I've been around the whole time. I just didn't talk much..... ;)

And sure, Reke makes everything more exciting to talk about.
