Bill Walton retires from broadcasting.

Well, **** you guys, I'm "saddened," more or less; just when I was starting to like the guy, he leaves...

Back surgery can be very problematical and I heard Walton is now on constant pain killers which would probably make his often whimsical comments as an NBA analyst even MORE off the wall. I never had a problem with him on the set, just that he should have always been wearing his trademark tie-dye tees instead of a biz suit matching all the other talking heads.

I'm sorry for him, if its because of constant back pain. That can be a misery. He's not that old. He's about the same age as my brother (younger than me). I never hated him as much as some Kings fans, even tho he was a huge Laker homer. He could be pretty funny, even when he didn't mean to be. ;)

I liked Walton, I always thought he was funny and that a lot of him being dumb was an act. He was a lot less dumb when calling the Clips games than when he was on national ones.

I was going to cheer until I read that this was caused by back problems. I don't wish that even on my least favorite Laker homer, Bill Walton. Luke Walton, maybe.:p

Doing color on the Clipper games was easy....

...There wasn't any color. All Walton ever had to say was that the Clippers were HORRRRIBLE! I thought he was kind of funny though.:p

His back and forth with Snapper was far more entertaining and less one-sided when he did the Clips games. Its like the national guys asked them to dial it up a notch and it backfired.

,,,especially when he didn't mean to be.

Seriously, he did a lot for the NBA when he played...just not in broadcasting. Sorry that constant back pain became a problem.

I liked Bill Walton as a broadcaster. He was playing a character and that character was entertaining, which is a lot more than I can say about all the other bafoons on ESPN.

HAHA. Yeah I hated Walton in the Kings/Lakers rivalry era but that sucks his back is so messed up.

I don't like these argumentative guys when they are allowed on the sports broadcast as the color guys. It's fine when they are in the studio discussing the game. But I want professionalism when I'm watching the game, not a highly opinionated guy that constantly contradicts and argues with the play by play man. Tony Kornheiser, Bill Walton and now Jeff Van Gundy are the ultimate in annoyance when watching a game. Van Gundy is extremely irritating. The man argues with everything his colleagues say and they have gotten to the point where they just don't even respond to half the stuff he says. I don't know why ESPN thinks this kind of stuff is necessary during the game. In the studio it can be entertaining. But we tune into the games to watch the game, not to pay attention to the drama thats going on inside the booth. Thats why guys like Al Micheals, Marv Albert and Pat Summerall were so great. They never forced their opinions on anyone and tried to steal your attention away from the show. They know what they say is secondary to the game and thats the way it should be.

I just remember a game when Pete Chillcut had scored on three straight possesions and Walton said: Pete Chillcut, you can't stop him, you can only hope to contain him!

I had to laugh at that one.
