Everybody has a short leash this year.

  1. Anybody who is on the "pre-approved" list of Top Tier Big Men (as determined by @Mr. S£im Citrus) will have their nightly statlines recorded, regardless of whether they are good or bad.
  2. Any big man not on the pre-approved list of Top Tier Big Men is eligible to be included in the Honorable Mention portion of the nightly listing. Inclusion into the Honorable Mention portion requires at least one of the following:
    • 20/10 performance (doesn't matter which stat is the 20, and which one is the 10)
    • Triple-double
    • Double-double in a win versus a Top 5 team
      • Prior to Week 8, the designation of "Top 5 team" will be determined by the average power rankings score, as compiled from ESPN, NBA, CBS Sports, NBC Sports and Yahoo Sports. After Week 8, the designation of "Top 5 team" will be determined solely by win-loss record.
  3. 5 or more appearances in the Honorable Mention portion of the listing in the same month will qualify a player for a probationary inclusion to the Top Tier Big Men nightly listing, until/unless otherwise determined by @Mr. S£im Citrus (criteria for full inclusion to be disclosed at a later date... maybe).
    • Any big man who receives two or more BMOtN awards in the same month as an Honorable Mention will also be subject to probationary inclusion to the Top Tier Big Men nightly listing.
    • Any player included in the listing who posts five or more "double-singles" in a month will be subject to removal from the listing.
  4. This is a list for Big Men, not Tall Men. Tall, talented players who don't play regular minutes at PF or C, or whom don't self-identify as Big Men (e.g., Kevin Durant, Giannis Antetokuonmpo) will not be included in this listing.
  5. Nightly listings will, TTBOMA, be posted between 23:00-23:30 ET, with any late game statlines being posted the following morning.
The following is the "pre-approved" list of Top Tier Big Men:
  • Edrice Adebayo (MIA)
  • DeAndre Ayton (PHO)
  • John Collins (ATL)
  • Anthony Davis (LAL)
  • Joel Embiid (PHI)
  • Rudy Gobert (MIN)
  • Nikola Jokic (DEN)
  • Domantas Sabonis (SAC)
  • Karl-Anthony Towns (MIN)
  • Nikola Vucevic (CHI)

Probationary Top Tier Big Men (as of April 1, 2023):

  • Evan Mobley (CLE)
  • Alperen Şengün (HOU)
  • Jonas Valančiūnas (NOP)

Giving it to Siakam over Stifle, due to quality of opposition.

Power Rankings? I didn't think you held those in any esteem
I don't. But, failing in those, there will definitely be a non-zero number of players ineligible for Honorable Mention, because one of the ways you can qualify for Honorable Mention is, "Double-double in a win versus a Top 5 team," and for the first month and a half or so, teams haven't played enough games to base Top 5 off of record.

Note: Having not yet seen Paolo Banchero play with my own eyes, I haven't made up my mind whether he's a big man or a tall man. I included him in the Honorable Mention list for last night, but I reserve the right to pull his classification after I actually see him play.

Thunder, but on a back to back.

*Comment related solely to impresiveness of the tripple duble, not to the award rewarded.

Lauri Markeneen should be on the list I don't see that much difference than say Pascal in terms of where he plays his minutes. He has had to play a small amount of SF at times due to Kelly O and Kesslar being way less athletic than he is. Lauri is most def a big man who will put up serious numbers.

As the person who decides what the criteria is, I will call your attention to a couple of things:
  1. Through four games in the 2022-23 season, Markkanen has played a higher percentage of his minutes at small forward (17%) than he has at center (13%). AFAIC, that "small amount" is not small enough. By comparison, Siakam has played 66% of his minutes at center and none at small forward.
  2. For his career, Markkanen takes +54% of his shots outside of 16 feet, and 45% on the season. Siakam is at 31% and 34%, respectively.
Source: Basketball-Reference.com (Pascal Siakam) (Lauri Markkanen)

Siakam is "big man," Markkanen is "tall man."

I'm not staying up for the fourth quarter of Warriors/Suns. Ayton is the only top tier big man on the schedule tonight, and nobody played well enough to earn Honorable Mention. I'll post Ayton's line tomorrow for posterity, but there'll be no award.

10/25 Big Man update:

DeAndre Ayton: 16/14/4/1/0 versus Warriors

DeAndre Jordan played ten minutes and was a -10 in a game his team won by 11. Shoulda kept Cousins.

Well, the Hornets played Orlando tonight, so I finally got a chance to see Paolo Banchero play with my own eyes. By my count, the Magic had 61 offensive possessions when Paolo Banchero was on the court. Of those 61 possessions, Banchero didn't so much as take a step inside the three-point line on 33 of them. Of the 28 possessions where he did step inside the three-point line, he only made it to the Painted Area™ (s/o Hubie Brown) on 14 of them. Here are the results of those 14 possessions (warning: may not be completely in chronological order):
  1. Made layup (drive)
  2. Made layup (drive)
  3. Blocked at rim (drive)
  4. Pass out (missed shot)
  5. Missed layup (drive)
  6. Turnover
  7. Pass out (turnover)
  8. Fouled (1 of 2 fts)
  9. Pass out (made shot/assist)
  10. Fouled (0 of 2 fts)
  11. Layup (post up)
  12. Pass out (made shot/no assist)
  13. Pass out (missed shot)
  14. Pass out (free throws)

Verdict: Paolo Banchero is not Big Man, he is Tall Man.

I actually had this done before I went to bed last night, but forgot to post it. And I've been running around all day, and when I did have an hour or so to myself, I wasn't anywhere near the computer I'd typed this up on, and I refused to do it all again from scratch.
