Beno/Tryeke backcourt of the future?

Hall of Famer
So....lets get into this again. I would rather this thread be more about what everyone thinks of Beno being our future pg alongside Tyreke instead of Tyreke can't play pg. But I know this thread will take whatever course it's going to take.

Right now Beno is arguably playing like a top 10 pg. Can he keep playing at this level, stat wise? I doubt it. But he has been one of our most consistent players all year, and just seems to be getting a better grasp of this offense and running this team. His game compliments Tyreke's pretty well at this point. If Tyreke improves his jumper, which is more of a question of when, not if, and becomes at least an average outside threat, he and Beno could be a very good backcourt.

YES!

Remember when pretty much everyone on this board was crazy about Jose Calderon a couple years back?.. Well Beno has pretty turned into that guy.

The only thing I'd like to see Beno work on more is drawing fouls. Hes got that little free throw line jumper down. All he needs to do is lean in and draw the contact when he gets the defender flying at him. I think it could do wonders for him if he could do that 2 or 3 times a game.

All and all, Beno has been my 2nd favorite King this year and has definitely secured his spot as part of this teams future in my opinion.

I'd rather have someone taller - a SG with some PG skils, a-la Doug Christie. But as for now, Beno is the candidate for this job.

Beno's been playing well enough this year that nobody's been suggesting that we need to draft a PG or combo guard now, the emphasis is definitely on remedying the weakness of our bigs.

AFAIK, Beno's happy in Sac. Unless we landed the #1 draft pick, which seems very unlikely, I can't think of any reason he'd be going anywhere.

Since Martin/Tyreke didn't work it's nice that the next choice did. Beno is our best shooter IMO and I like him as a PG sized SG knocking down 3s. Of course he can do much more than that as evidenced by his triple double. I know he's got a hefty contract but he's a good player and we're lucky to have him.

IMHO they have similar skills but still Jose is a better ball distributor.

I don't know about that. you really have to take into consideration who the ball is being distributed to. Calderon has had a super star in Chris Bosh to dish it of to his entire career.

I say yes too. To me, the Kings are:

Beno
Reke
Greene/Casspi/Francisco
???????????????????
???????????????????

Beno getting straightened out is the second best thing to happen to the Kings this year!

I was not talking about their stats. Obviously, every Stockton needs Malone and I think you are right about that. I just think that Beno is more of a scoring PG and Jose is more of a setup PG with almost Beno-like scoring skills. So, I think that Calderon is slightly better overall but Beno IMO is a better fit for Tyreke because he can play off the ball much better.

I agree. I think Beno and Evans can play quite nicely together and their games are well suited for just that purpose. An Udrih-Evans or Evans-Udrih backcourt works for me.

Hefty in terms of who the Kings have on contract, I suppose, but he's been earning his keep this year for sure. To me, at least, this backcourt seems the most ideal pairing, with heavy sprinkles of Garcia.

No way. Beno would make a great backup at the point, and sometimes at the 2. Not a starter. We need a long super athletic stopper at the two.

It'll work, but if you told me this is the backcourt of the future, I'd honestly be let down.
My hope is Beno is the 3rd guard and they pick up a slightly better version of Garcia. Garcia has everything you'd want in Tyreke's compliment (size/defense/shooting/handling/passing), except he's merely OK at those things, and not a great athlete.

I think that is why I like Beno so much as our starting PG. He is so interchangeable! He can be the Point Guard on some plays and bring the ball up and set up the offense, then the next time down the court they can switch it up and Tyreke can be the trigger man and Beno can come off screens for a shot. So in effect you have 2 point guards who can score and the defense has to figure out who is running the show! It adds an element of surprise to the Kings offense.

Beno has more than lived up to his contract. I think that Petrie was right to lock up Beno long term. Even though last year looked like Petrie made a mistake on signing Beno, he has come back this year stronger than ever and has played some great basketball. You can argue that Beno has been our most consistent player. He has been an effective scorer and distributor. I think the Point Guard situation is in great shape with Beno/Evans/Garcia.

I think RIGHT NOW, Beno is a better floor general than Tyreke is. He paces the game better, and distributes it better as well. That being said, we need Tyreke to learn, and so he needs the ball in his hands. I would love to see Beno take on a Manu Ginobili type role, where he comes off the bench to provide a spark and plays starter minutes. We need an athletic 2 guard that can really shoot and play solid defense.

Incidentally, I think Manu Ginobili would be *the* perfect complement to Tyreke. Of course this thinking is largely academic as Manu, by now, is far too old for us to sign him, but if he were younger: Can create (played PG when Parker went down a year or two ago and did so brilliantly), has no problem playing off the ball, plays defense, has a great three point shot and is also a very good option in crunch time (not necessarily a must next to Havoc, but always something nice to have).

You pretty much described Doug Christie as well. In terms of current players, D. Wade, Stephen Curry, Joe Johnson, Jason Terry first come to mind. Or rookies like John Wall or Evan Turner? :D

Well, I'd argue that Christie didn't quite have the three point range and that he was not really as good a player, but otherwise yes, Doug would be a great fit as well. As for the rest of your list: Wade is too ball dominant and doesn't have the range that would be needed, Curry is too small and not good enough defensively, Johnson is pretty much perfect and Terry is, again, not tall enough. If giving Tyreke the perfect backcourt mate is the priority for this offseason, then there are definitely enough options. However, I'd still rather get a better centre.

Well, Beno has much more experience than Tyreke and as we tend to forget, was actually a back up on a championship team. I think his game can really complement Tyreke's, and I can't wait to see a backcourt of Tyreke Evans that can shoot and Beno Udrih. I just hope that Beno continues working hard this offseason

It's true. Even as an ostensibly delusional publicist of beno, I didn't think he would be this successful. I'm glad he played well yesterday as it shows he doesn't need Tyreke to prove himself.
Beno is good enough to get us into the playoffs with Tyreke by his side. Our backcourt is fine, I doubt Beno will be going anywhere in the future with the absurdly large amount of work that needs to be done in the other 3 positions. So I'm gonna go with yes.

I think our offense runs really well with Beno pulling the trigger. He's doing now what he was doing in 2006 that had me all excited about his game. Really good shooter, midrange shot almost never misses, willing and able passer, somewhat deficient on defense, but so are a lot of point guards. I see no reason why he can't be in the mix from this point forward.

As an aside, our offense can be efficient, but we need Tyreke's playmaking ability to be able to take over when things get tough, when shots aren't falling, like the fourth quarter yesterday, and against the Grizzlies last week. That's something that Beno can't do. The two of them make a good backcourt team, regardless of the official positions they play.

I've posted a bunch about this on this site but imo Beno is the exact type of player that will thrive next to Reke... and vice versa. So yeah, I'm very happy with him as our "other" guard.

I also like Landry well enough at PF. So to me that leaves two spots that need to be upgraded... SF and Center. Now we have guys with potential at those positions so the upgrade could come from our own roster... or it could come from fa or the draft. We're getting there... another player or two and some time for Reke to develop and we're a contender again!

Beno is playing great in Rekes absense and has been playing well all season whenever we need him to step up(IE. First Utah game), but I still would love if we had a bigger guy back there with Reke. Beno would be the perfect 6th man for this team, if we could ever get a bunch of bench players like we had in the Webber years.

Beno has a spot though, he definately has shown that he can play in this league and if he keeps this up that contract will not be looking to bad.,

I think Brick summed it nicely weeks ago when he compared Beno-Evans to Fisher-Kobe. The two work well together for whatever reason.

Now lets work on the paint.

Agreed. Lucky for us this draft is strong with bigs who can do some work in the paint... Cousins, Favors, Udoh, Monroe
