Bee reporting that Westphal will be next coach

#4
I'm concerned that this nearly month long wait to confirm Westphal after May's handshake agreement will undermine Westphal from the beginning. I considered him from the beginning to be a fail-safe option in case they couldn't get Eddie Jordan and the long wait was starting to lead me to believe that were going to wait until the NBA Finals ended so they could make the offer to Rambis.

I tend to believe what Amick is reporting. Westphal was said to not just be impressive in his interview but "very impressive." I think the Kings probably would have went with him over Jordan even if he was still under consideration. The other two candidates did not meet what GP originally said he wanted in a radio interview, as far as "NBA head coaching experience." Yes, Rambis had a tad but I never wanted him and will be happy to get Westphal on board - like right now.

does the next head coach for the kings really matter anymore tho? They should just keep calling it "interim head coach" because the job seriously is temporary.

With the Lakers in the midst of the NBA Finals against Orlando, Rambis was adamant that he remain loyal to the Lakers and focused on the task of winning a championship. Westphal, meanwhile, had grown impatient enough that sources say he was close to pulling out of the race. In the end, however, he was alone at the finish line.
This line from Amick is scary. We let these guys just push us around .. if Rambis is the guy you want, wait for him ... dont hire someone cause your scared they will back out ...

If Rambis really wanted the job, he would have agreed to it already... I'm fine with Westpaul. At least he's proven coach with experience.

I'm only ok withe Westphal if Porter and Elie are his assistants.
Agreed- and it can't hurt to have a guy who was one hell of a PG in his own right possibly mentoring the one we might draft this year. I like it- affordable, fits parameters, local connection with mayor, big winning percentage no matter what his teams, and a departure from the experimentation of the last three years. It can be assumed, in a way, that anything he might have "missed" by being away for a while will be well bridged by Elie and Porter.

Yea its looks pretty bad to get pushed around by a coaching candidate who hasnt really done anything as a coach.
He hasn't done anything as a coach? If he hadn't done much he wouldn't be considered after the coaches we went through.

I don't think GP is the type to panic, he will go at his pace for better or worse.

Good pick in opinion and made the most sense.

Well it's not an exciting choice here in kings land, I almost wonder if this is temporary as well until Bryon Scott or someone else becomes available...

Wow, horrible decision to pass up Thib IMO. I'm no longer supporting the Kings by attending games or buying merchandice. I'm very disappointed right now.

Its not all bad:

Paul Westphal
Overall: 267 - 159
Playoffs: 27 - 22

Year Team Season Playoffs
1992 PHO 62 - 20 13 - 11
1993 PHO 56 - 26 6 - 4
1994 PHO 59 - 23 6 - 4
1995 PHO 14 - 19 0 - 0
1998 SEA 25 - 25 0 - 0
1999 SEA 45 - 37 2 - 3
2000 SEA 6 - 9 0 - 0

My concerns are that he's been out of the game for a long time, and its been even longer since he had real success. Got fired from his second/last posting after losing the team -- they were soft and disorganized during his years. But he did have that opening run of success with the Sir Charles Suns, and that still leaves him well above .500. You can say it was the talent, and probably be right, but not too many coaches have won 60+ no matter the roster.

I'm fine with it. I'm glad the decision has been made so he can be onboard before draft day...

Yeah this is not a "end of the world" signing. I think Coach Westphal is what this team needs right now. A proven winner who can teach the kids how to play NBA basketball.

Will he be the Coach that takes us back to the promised land? No.
Will he be the Coach that begins to set the stage and build that foundation? Yes.
