Musselman wants Miller to go above and beyond

He had the reputation as unorthodox before, and now there's this.

Brad Miller the high-post passer will also be Brad Miller the three-point shooter, center position be darned. Kings coach Eric Musselman has asked his center to take his perimeter game even farther from hoop as a means to improve offensive spacing.

"One of the things we've asked him to do is not to be spaced out inside the three-point line, but to be spaced out outside the three-point line," Musselman said. "We want Brad to start taking three-point shots. When he's open, we don't want the hesitation."

When Musselman was hired during the offseason, he spoke more often about Miller's three-point abilities than he did his well-known passing skills.

Miller was coming off a season in which he had taken more than twice as many attempts from beyond the arc than any season before, hitting 34 of 88 at a clip of 38.6 percent. The trend has not continued, though, as Miller has hit just 4 of 22 three-point attempts this season.

"I've always been a rhythm guy, so I'm not going to go out there and just shoot them," Miller said. "I'll just shoot them in the context of the offense."

Miller's all-around game has been on the rise recently. Entering Thursday, he had averaged 5.5 assists and 7.6 rebounds in the 11 games since returning from a two-game absence because of personal reasons. The sight of wing players cutting to the hoop and turning Miller passes into easy baskets is routine again, this as the Kings' offense has been on the rise and ranked ninth in the league (100.2 points per game) before they faced Chicago.

But the development that has his teammates giddy is his recent presence in the paint on the defensive end.

After tallying just 10 blocks in his first 29 games, Miller had eight blocks in the six games before the Bulls' visit, including two key swats to secure the Kings' win over New Orleans on Monday.

On the road -- Kevin Martin's father and younger brother have been staying with him for a week, taking in three home games during the stay before hitting the road back to Zanesville, Ohio.

They've done it in a fashion far from the charter-flight style Martin is so used to, an old-fashioned commercial flight West after driving journeys to road games in Detroit and New York.

John Salmons, on the other hand, covered far less ground and had no fun doing it Thursday. The Kings swingman was rear-ended on his way to the game on Interstate 80, arriving later than usual but in plenty of time to compete. No one was hurt in the accident.

You know, that explains so much.

:p

Until the last couple of weeks, it seems like Brad and the whole team were spaced out. ;)

VF... about to hit the 40k post mark. Yikes!

i think i would be more concerned with him being the distributor from the high post and grabbing those boards. 12 last night. very good. but before the kings can space it out and let him fire up threes he has to re-gain enough confidence to knock down those elbow jumpers. more consistantly

Indeed -- I believe I predicted sometime this offseason that Brad was going to slowly morph into Terry Mills/Brian Cook, and here we go.

Makes sense to me... Brad isn't much of a threat in the paint anyway. If he starts hitting his 3's, the big guys on opposing teams are gonna have to stay out to cover him, opening the inside up. This will give us a better chance for rebounds too.

Indeed, nothing says "rebounding" quite like having your center at the three point line.

Next he''s going to want Mike to post up... Nothing says "I want my center at the three point line" quite like a 17.4 three point percentage...

On the flipside, maybe it can help in transition defense since our entire team will already be at the three point line and Brad's slowfootedness will have a nice headstart on his opponent. We have found the key.

The best I've seen Miller play in the last 2 years, maybe even in his entire year as a King was when they were playing Indiana and Jeff Fisher slapped Miller's already injured hand -- HARD. Miller gets sooo ticked he goes out to the three point line and buries one three after another. He didn't think:rolleyes: , he wasn't indecisive  . He just shot the freaking ball. I say that Musselman should hire someone to put on the opposing team's jersey, give him a rubber mallet, and slam Miller's hand just to give Miller a little boost for the game.:D

I imagine it would be more for Artest post skills to be better utilized without the opposing center being witin arms reach to double down on him. and it gives kevin more space to cut. As for rebouding. Whatever will we do without Brads 1.3 offensive rebound per game. Actually he may get more with all the long rebounds we have that we never seem to be in position for.

Brick i think the point D13 was making about rebound is that the opposing Center will not be around the basket if he is coving Brad. Once again Brads barely averages 1 off rebound so rebounding will be a non issue.

I think they took the emphasize on "Spaced Out" and not for Brad to try more 3's. Why Brad, our only 7 footer and Center is being asked to try more 3's, is beyond me. I know he likes the 18 foot jumper and to try to draw the other Center out to him to guard Miller, but then who gets the rebounds Artest and Kenny? Maybe Martin. We are getting killed enough on the boards on any given night. I know Miller isn't a great rebounder or shot blocker, but we could use some more looks by getting offensive boards. So many other teams get 2 or more cracks at the basket by getting offensive rebounds, we do not.

Yeah a Tonya Harding assigned assign! :p
Brad sure did pick up his game after that slap, I remember it very well. So really a lot of Miller's play is around incentives. If he wants to he can really raise his game, this can be said of quite a few players in the NBA, and especially on the Kings with our under achieving (K9, Bibby, SAR, Miller). Really Artest and KMart are our most consistent players, at least right now.

One thing Muss is right about is that Brad hesitates too much. How many times this year has he passed up a beautiful shot just too make an ugly pass for a difficult shot.

Miller only averages 1 off rebound a game we will NOT miss that at all. If anything it will draw the opposing Center farther away from the paint and thus keeping the other teams best or at least 2nd best rebounder off the defensive glass. Couldn'g you see guys like Marcus Camby or Chris Kaman only getting like 3 or 4 defensive rebounds a game because they are stretched out to the 3pt line. BUT this is a big BUT, if Miller don't hit the 3's then they will have no reason to be out there.

They will have no reason to be out there anyway -- they will be switched off onto our PF while they guard Brad with their SF. Maybe even with a guard.

So your sayig their PF or center will be guarding Artest? good point but, they come out on him now at the elbow why would they all of sudden not go 5 or 6 more feet? If the offense starts with nobody in the paint their PF and Center have to go somewhere and if they come out on Artest to start the play then he could go around them easily. I don't know how it will work exactly but, lets just see what happens before we say it won't or will i guess. Its a switch you don't see much. Lets remember that Dirk going out like that has made Josh Howards career going to the basket with no potential shotblocker around.

Now all we have to do is to wave our magic wand and turn Brad into Dirk and Cisco into Josh Howard. That might get us into the playoffs.

now why would say cisco (our 2nd reserve SG/SF) and not say Martin. Was it just to make your point seem valid? Brad don't have to be Dirk but, he has to be guarded. I am still blown away by you Cisco remark and not saying Martin. Just to make it seem like an aweful idea by saying our 3rd or 4th man off the bench. Credibility is hard to come by around here and comments like that don't help.

Talk about reading way too much into something...

If you disagree, why not just say so without the last comment? It is, however, pretty ironic.

That just stuck me as odd. Kinda of like saying the Lakers need somebody like Jordan and instead of saying Kobe you bring up Luke Walton.

btw speaking of last comments :)

Brad Miller

Gosh--what I got out of this article was Musselman making/asking/demanding something of one of his players and that player saying "I will play the game the way it comes to me." It seems like the players have made it clear they do not respond to this coach. Annie.
