Bee: Maloofs gush over Brooks (merge)

One thing I am not clear on - was Scott Brooks George Karl's #1 assistant?

I found this article where it talks about him coming in for Karl when he was suspended

http://www.usatoday.com/sports/basketball/nba/nuggets/2005-11-30-nuggets-karl-suspended_x.htm

It sounds like he is - but odd that he would leave George Karl to sit under Muss. Maybe it was his family connections to the area

I think he was and went 0-4 in the games where he took over for Karl.

Someone correct me if I am wrong on this.

Guys, it doesnt matter if we brought in Phil or Pop, we are still not making it past the first round at best looking at the crew that we currently have. Brooks is fine by me. If the Maloofs strike it rich this time in a young/new coach that pushes this team to a playoff, then we have someone that will become affixed to this team for a long time to come. Rebuilding begins with coaching.

Maloof's go ga-ga, gushing over Musselman in series of quotes announcing his hiring as coach of the Sacramento Kings:

"I know we're going to be the best-prepared team in the league now," owner Joe Maloof told The Associated Press in a phone interview Friday night. "We just like him a lot. We're really comfortable with the guy. Our whole family feels that way. He's a basketball a-holic."

The entire Maloof family felt a kinship with Musselman — particularly the four brothers who extended their father's business empire when George Maloof died. Musselman is the son of Bill Musselman, the late NBA coach who raised his family with game film on the television instead of cartoons in the mornings. "That was like our family," Joe Maloof said. "We talked all business at the table. His father died at a young age, just like our father. We were young guys when we took over our dad's business. We believe in youth. We believe young guys can get things done."

"I think we got one of the brilliant young minds in basketball today with Eric Musselman," said co-owner Joe Maloof from Sacramento.

oh man. the memories. the unintentional comedy.

i'll support brooks, but the maloofs pushing so hard for somebody makes my spider senses tingle. hope that it is a good move, and that in the short term he'll at least develop some team chemistry.

Honestly, the Maloofs just tend to gushiness and hyperbole about a lot of things. It's just their personalities and I pretty much ignore it. There were a lot of Kings fans who were pretty excited about Musselman last year, too.

If Brooks is named as coach, I'll give him a chance to prove himself. I'm not going to hold it against him that the Maloofs gushed or that he worked under Muss. (Doesn't 3 years under Karl count at all?)

I hope he succeeds. It would be kind of nice to have a local boy make it as a head coach. :)

Yeah, while I may not be enamored with how the Maloofs have handled things over the last year or so, and I honestly prefer Rambis over Brooks, I can't really fault the Maloofs on this hire. They made it pretty clear it was Petrie's search. Sure they met with the guy and liked him (They've said how much they like every candidate... Bee just spins certain meetings more than others based on the writers preferences) but i don't think they are making the decision. Additionally I don't think the Maloofs can or should be criticized for being cheap as owners. Perhaps too hands on, but not cheap.

I'm reserving judgement. I think Brooks is a decent choice, but the Maloofs overwhelming endorsement makes me nervous. And when Joe said that Brooks reminds him of himself and Gavin... well, that didn't give me a warm and fuzzy feeling!:)

We will see though. I think it's a decent choice, and I just hope it works out well.

As it stands, this is not a playoff team. I don't think it doesn't really matter who we bring in if all you want to do is improve on last year's record. All I want is for us to finally start building on a clear identity and to play the younger players a lot and they could go 0-82 for all I care.

Well, I'm glad you can accept a 0-82 record.

Clarification: This isn't a done deal...yet. There hasn't been a formal announcement. While I'm guessing it will be soon, we could all still be surprised.

there's always another option. how bout Ron Artest as a player/coach?!

if we get rid of some of the bad seeds and really focus on developing the youngsters, i think Brooks could be a great fit. he couldn't be worse than Muss. Muss was a bad coach who had no respect. at least Brooks has the respect

"Bogus" is a rather strong word, dontacha think? It's certainly within the realm of possibility. Rebuilding years ahead, no new arena, no franchise player, very astute Maloof business minds...cheaping out may make complete biz-sense once the No. 1 choice fled town. Just maybe the Maloofs don't want to "go big" at this point. ;)

Come on, JM. You've been using some pretty strong words to verbalize your disdain for the possibility of Scott Brooks.

You're acting as though Phil Jackson, Red Auerbach and even Rick Adelman are all out there waiting to be selected and the Kings are opting for Bozo the one-legged monkey.

We didn't get SVG so, at this point, it's more a matter of personal preference on Petrie's part than any clear-cut leader among the remaining candidates.

I think the fact the Maloofs, Petrie AND the players all get along well with Brooks is a big plus. And since we're not going to be vying for the national championship next year anyway, we might as well go with Brooks and start the rebuilding in earnest.

I guess I'm just objecting to the term "cheaping out" because it sounds as though the Kings are intentionally passing over more qualified candidates because they don't want to pay for them. I don't think that's true at all.

That's correct- but Carmelo was hurt and the team, by all accounts, was a sick note and in disarray.

Likewise, we can't put too much stock in him beating the Celts last year, but the team looked SO outrageously different that it's worth noting....

Exactly. If you go back and look at the game and PBP threads, I think there's even some mention of how different things looked with Brooks out there. I do remember one thing for certain - the players didn't look as though they were being detained after school for a change.

:)

The maloofs might be so excited this time because petrie is running the show and they wont take the heat on this one. unless you bring up the fact that they still fired Rick A. with out a back up plan.

look petrie didnt waste anytime bringing brooks back asap. after SVG. SVG was his top choice and we were using Rambis to try and keep SVG honest(obviously before the Billy D. thing.) at that point Rambis and him had about the same background minus Rambis was a losing coach. Petrie was obviously shooting for SVG but Brooks might have been his sec choice all along.

Exactly right. All things, IMO, happen for some reason. This may be the case here....

So Brooks is the guy. At this point I don't know whether to be happy for him or pity him. He needs a big red cape to ward of the the angry bulls that are going to be coming at him, this season, and probably next. Mr. Brooks, hopefully you have rehearsed how you are going to handle all the post-game interviews asking about why your team is losing. I also hope your contract is longer than 3 years, that's for sure. It should be 5, so after the Kings go 30-52 next year the Maloofs will think twice and thrice before firing you. For your sake, Mr. Brooks, I hope that Petrie unloads Artest and Thomas before the season begins. And, I hope that the Maloofs and Petrie shut their mouths about making the playoffs. The theme of this year and next should be, "Rebuilding with Youth", not "One More Playoff Run". If the expectations are reduced, you can have a fighting chance. If not, you're Dead Man Walking.

AGAIN we do not KNOW for certain that Brooks is the guy. Everything seems to be pointing that way but nothing has been announced.

Honestly, I can't wait to end this whole process and just get to addressing the players he'll be coaching. Plus I'm bored and wouldn't mind having a press conference or Geoff quotes to listen to today :D

Wonder what's holding up the announcement? In the past, the Kings have scheduled announcements around the start of the Grant Napear radio show (4 p.m.). That way Sports 1140 gets the news scoop. Enough gushing. ;)

You must be desperate for a head coach if you're looking forward to listening to Geoff Petrie. The guy is sharp, but he's Mr. Drone On as a communicator. :D

It's definitely possible that the whimsical Maloofs gush over Brooks one day in the newspaper, and the next day choose somebody else. But it sure does smell like a PR job, doesn't it? Having an article come out about how much they like the guy? Out of the blue, really. We didn't see that article about Rambis. It sure seems like they are laying the groundwork so that people aren't surprised by the news - just accepting of it.

You must have worked in public relations or marketing to come up with that astute observation. Nice work. ;)

i agree with bm52. we are doomed, especially with a no-name like Scott Brooks at the healm. who?

Sorry, but your hand-wringing and wailing is pretty much going to fall on deaf ears around here. This is just getting to be silly.

Scott Brooks has been a player in the NBA. He's coached at a couple of different levels and served four years as an assistant coach in the NBA. While he might not be the best possible candidate in the history of the NBA, he has a valid resume for consideration by a team in the situation the Kings currently find themselves.
