Kings notes: Will Kings gamble on former Runnin' Rebel?

LAS VEGAS-Louis Amundson, NBA unknown, stepped back into his personal spotlight Tuesday night, returning to Thomas & Mack Center as at least a temporary member of the Kings.

Whether he becomes an actual King by making it to opening night remains to be seen. But for at least a night, the UNLV product had the chance to play in a most familar setting.

"It's real cool," Amundson said. "Obviously, it's everything you could imagine for me."

Seeing old friends. Playing on campus again.

Being hounded for tickets.

"I could only come up with 15," he said. "But I needed a lot more."
The story of his current basketball life. Amundson is scraping to make the Kings, too, staying in contention for one of the final roster spots against the long odds of being a power forward on a team that already has Shareef Abdur-Rahim, Maurice Taylor, Kenny Thomas as roster locks, with Corliss Williamson playing there and small forward.

"He had a great summer league, and he kind of gives us that dimension that we need," coach Eric Musselman said. "He doesn't need the ball. As a matter of fact, he won't get the ball."

Amundson has made an impression, in other words, by filling a role in doing the dirty work. He's used to that -- he averaged just 7.2 points at UNLV but also finished seventh in career rebounds and 11th in career blocks, a creditable standing for a program with a great history.

He also left with a degree in university studies, graduating cum laude in May 2005 as a four-time member of the Mountain West Conference All-Academic team. He even started on a second degree, in finance, but hasn't made much progress in recent months.

"No," Amundson said. "No time right now."

Rest stop -- There was no sighting of the opposing star this time, either.
A game after facing the Dallas Mavericks without Dirk Nowitzki, the Kings got the Lakers without Kobe Bryant, as expected. Bryant, recovering from surgery on his right knee, only recently has started to practice as part of his return from offseason surgery on his right knee and missed the three exhibitions before Tuesday.

The Lakers say Bryant might get in one game during the exhibition season, Oct. 26, as the final tuneup for the opener five nights later against Phoenix. The superstar guard has said he will face the Suns, but it is not known how soon he will be allowed to play on consecutive nights, an immediate issue because of the Nov. 1 trip to Golden State.

Calendar crunch -- Tuesday began a stretch in which the Kings will play three games in four nights and seven in 11. That demanding pace means no cuts are expected until at least Sunday, after games at Phoenix on Thursday, against Utah at Arco Arena on Friday and against New Orleans in Reno on Sunday.

After watching this guy's game vs the Lakers i would DEFINITELY give him a roster position. He's one of those unique ENERGY guys that always fuels the action on the court and makes things happen. We can always use that. Would think RonRon would love him. Loved what i saw from him last night.

Me too, Louis needs to stay as well as Justin Williams. Hart and Potato need to go, maybe Woods as well, but dropping Hart & Potato would bring the roster down to 15 which is the maximum we can keep. I'd then send Douby and Amundson down to the minors as we can only send 2 players there. Price should backup Bibby after Salmons and JWill2 can play for us right now off the bench, Amundson would be o.k. with his hustle, but he needs a little time to get a shot going.

If they keep only one of the undrafted bigs I hope its Williams.

He can do everything Lou can do but better...Why all this Amundson hype?

dude, Lou and Justin went head to head many times in college as they were in the same conference. Justin could block shots, but Wyoming had 2 other 7 footers next to him. In the end, Justin not only could not do as much as Lou, he didn't do it.

Anybody who has followed both guys in college has to like them both, but Lou is really special and only scratching the surface. Justin, more times than not, backed away from contact and avoided being the focal point in the offense most of his senior season. Yes the guy is talented and full of potential, but IMO Lou has more....plus Lou is by far, more athletic. Lou has between a 38-40 in verticle....he's 6'9" and that athletic???? its freak athleticism, and his nose for the ball is incredible....he's a rodman-esque type player, but you're probably one those that never knew how valuable rodman was as a player right????

Rodman wasnt valuable.

..If he didnt get those 18 boards a game that one season someone else would have. Sheesh!

Ok dude, you seem to know your college stuff a lot more then I do. I was kinda just making an assumption about Justin and Lou from summer camp and preseason. Thank you for showing me that assuming things is stupid by making an assumption of your own about me.

We'll see how it goes these next few days, personally I'd be happy with either of these guys getting on the team. Its just based on his performance so far I'm still hoping its Williams.

Rodman did have value and lots of it, he did have a very distracting off the court life which conflicted with his talen for pulling down boards. I was blessed to see a lot of him while he was with the Bulls becuase I lived in Chicago and Rodman was besides the best player I have ever seen in Michael Jordan.

I really hope both guys make it. I just have to keep rewinding and watching Lou's hustle plays, he has guard like quickness and athletism in a 6' 9" body which is rare. Both JWill2 and Lou have amazing potential and we need to get rid of the older guys we have here like Woods, Potato, and Hart to make room for the new guys. Douby and Amundson should go down to the minors, JWill2 we could use this season for his shot blocking abilities and athletism off the bench. Price is coming into his own and should be Bibby's backup behind Salmons, but really Salmons can back up the 2 and 3 so Price could straight up backup up Bibby. Garcia needs to find his way fast, he hasn't been the same since twisting his ankle last year.

Rebelx,
Both players had great senior seasons after not doing much before.
Amundson averaged 14pt 8.6 boards and 1.3 blocks
Williams averaged 11.1pt 11.0 boards and 5.4 blocks.

Their head to haead matchups produced pretty much the same numbers as above. You're claiming to have followed the players and to have the inside scoop, but how can you say that Amundson did more? Its pretty clear that Williams produced more in college and he has the more translatable skills in the pros since neither of them look like they'll be able to score at all (Amundson's only college advantage).

I'd like to keep them both but would really like to hold onto Williams.

Note the rebelx stands for Runnin' Rebels, i.e. Louis' team. Hence while he may have seen them play, it may be asking a bit much for true objectivity.

In any case I prefer Williams because in addition to the rebounding he is a far far better shotblocker, and we need that desperately. But wouldn't mind having both stick somehow. Just not sure how that would work.

I think the key word here is " potential "..we already know what Pota and Hart can do and that is frankly not a whole lot. However, these two new guys have tons of potential..the upside on these guys far outways keeping Pota and Hart.

I look forward to seeing how they both play tonight.

I was just being sarcastic cause that guy bashed my post..Rodman was actually one of my favorite players...For his rebounding and his crazyness!

Anyways...Yeah, I cant wait to see how these guys play tonight either....I hope Muss gives em each closer to 20 minutes this game.

I prefer Williams to Amundson. We have too many undersized PFs right now and not enough shotblocking/rebounding. Williams is a better shotblocker/rebounder.

I think they should just hang onto him and continue playing him in the preseason. Just see how he does. Personally, I really don't think he is that bad of a player and it really cant hurt to just keep him for now.
