Bee: Kings make offer to Wells...

Kings president of basketball operations Geoff Petrie said he made an offer to Wells, the shooting guard who earned $8 million last season. The offer is believed to be for above the midlevel exception of approximately $5 million, though the length of the offer is not known. Wells' agent, William Phillips, did not return numerous calls for comment.

"I'm not going to get in the specifics of any particular offer at this point, but we did make him a proposal," Petrie said. "I talked to William again today briefly. It's an ongoing negotiation. That's about where it is."
The Kings went to great lengths to get their payroll under the luxury tax, finally getting there when they traded center Brian Skinner to Portland in the deal that brought center Vitaly Potapenko and swingman Sergei Monia to Sacramento. Should the Kings resign Wells, they would again be over the tax, a price they are apparently willing to pay for the scoring and defensive punch he brings.
While Detroit and Denver are reportedly hoping to bring Wells their way for the midlevel exception, there are five teams with salary cap room who could offer more. Chief among them is Charlotte, followed by Atlanta, Chicago, New Orleans, and Toronto.
Petrie said Wells has unquestionable value. It's just a question of how much value. "We'll both keep working at it until something gets resolved," Petrie said. "And there's only three things that can happen here. He will sign with us. He will sign with something else. And there's the outside chance down the road that it gets into a sign and trade thing, which isn't even in the mix at the moment."

Hornets should be one less worry now that they offered a big deal to Peja which he is ready to sign once he is able to.

Hopefully Bonzi will take the offer.

I wonder how Bonzi feels about that. That 2 of his 3 suitors will be offering around the MLE, and the Kings are offering just above it. I wonder how he would feel about this contract actually being worth less. Hmm, this will be interesting.

It didn't say "just above" the MLE. It just said that it is for sure above it. I'd say 7-8 million range.

BBB: Um, yeah there is... Martin develops and breaks out more. Get a revised front-court. Or, we get a KG/Chandler/Nene.

Both having a back-up PG in mind.

I agree the not being contenders talk is a little far, but Bonzi sure would help and it gives us a whole lot of depth and versatility.

I just don't want this to become a big mess were each side is pissed at the other and Bonzi walks because he feels like we could have offered more. Chances are very slim, but i hope he agrees to the new deal without any major complications.

This is the Maloofs we're talking about. Odds are the fans will be pissed because they offered him too much! I just hope its a fair deal for both sides.

The last few years, they have been moving in the opposite direction of the free-spending, lock-em up at all cost philosophy they used to have

It would make no sense to make your BEST offer first. GP made a nice respectfull opening offer Bonzi knows he is wanted and will start for an exciting contender in Sac... Now non contenders or teams that can't promis him a start will have to work to get his attention. I am happy.

More than just moving away. Last free agent we actually RETAINED was...Mike?? Can't think of anybody else. Might have been since 2002.

They were not "core" guys. I would assume that Bonzi is considered "core" if they offered him a contract above the MLE.

What about Brad? He was a FA but they broke the bank for him.

I just hope the deal is fair.

other than mobley and jim jackson, i cant recall a lot to be RETAINED.

Mobley
J Jackson
Vlade
Darius
Mo
Damon Jones
Massenberg
Buford
...

probably missing some.

Been a long time. Not that they were in anyway all bad decisions. Just that when it becomes consistent over that long a period of time chances are its not entirely coincidence.

In that time we've also dumped a variety of other players before we would even have to pay them, including Peja, Wallace, Keon, Bobby, Doug etc.

There was a core time when we were all about winning no matter th cost, and we picked up players and retianed them without even blinking. Whatever it took. Then the maloofs did blink, and I think quit beleiveing and got a little cynical. Money dried up, as did the mandate to spend what was necessary.

Its starting to make more and more sense why they were going away from that direction looking at that list. That list gets rediculous towards the end.

That was reported earlier today, before the Kings offer..

If they offer more than us, does Bonzi really want to move again? And to be on the bench of a team that won't be as good whether Ben's there or not? Also, that story, isn't even legit, it's speculation!

I'd say we still have the advantage.

They won't have any cap space anyway. Wouldn't be able to offer much more than the MLE and the only other way is in a sign and trade.

Bonzi has said that he wants to stay. The Maloofs have said repeatedly they want him to stay. I think Petrie was told to make a good faith offer. If he did, I suspect Bonzi will accept it.

Not just that, but Bonzi would have to think about whether he would start or even get significant minutes with all the other talented guards the Pistons have. That is the reason I am not too worried about the Pistons.

Remember that it is one of the major things that led to his disputes and eventual exits with Portland and Memphis. Conversly, it seemed to be a big reason why he wasn't a problem in Sacramento - he was given a major role and significant minutes on our team when healthy. He responded with 100% effort and exploded in the playoffs.

In my opinion, players play better when they feel that they are part of a team, they are certainly happier. Bonzi has said he wants to stay in Sac. and he was very appreciative of the zealous fan feedback. He obviously has a clear role on our team and I think that will somewhat sway his decision. At least I really really hope so.......

I am not sure anymore these days

Of course you aren't. You never are. That's part and parcel of you being you, isn't it?

;)
