Remembering King

Scotty Stirling reflected on an old friend with equal parts humor and sorrow.

The Kings' director of scouting worked five years as a color man alongside broadcasting giant Bill King, who died Tuesday, on Raiders games in the early 1970s. He recalled how as the Warriors' broadcaster King would get into it with officials during games and was once fined by the NBA for calling a ref "spineless." Stirling also marveled how King, for a little man, could really chow down and clear out a broadcast booth during timeouts after two bowls of chili. "I hired him when I was with the Raiders and we became close friends," Stirling said. "Great man. It's such a shock."

More King

Mike Lamb of Sports 1140 said his greatest broadcasting thrill was sitting in with King during some early 1980s Raiders broadcasts. And Grant Napear, also of 1140: "Bum Phillips used to say that Earl Campbell may not be in a class by himself, but it doesn't take long to call roll. Same thing can be said about Bill King."

Andre the giant?

Andre Miller of the Denver Nuggets, never one to self-promote, said last week that he might be one of the top five point guards in the NBA. A quickie press-row review reveals that Miller might not even crack this list: Steve Nash, Jason Kidd, Stephon Marbury, Allen Iverson, Mike Bibby, Gilbert Arenas, Tony Parker and Baron Davis.

Et cetera

Kings fans roared when Bibby finally scored, with 2:54 left in the third quarter, with two free throws, leaving the Kings guard to chuckle. • If there were an ex-coach dress code, Rick Majerus would have been a blatant violator Tuesday. The large and jovial ex-University of Utah coach, at Arco Arena as a guest of Denver coach George Karl, sat baseline in shorts and a T-shirt.

• Referee Courtney Kirkland called a player-control foul in the first half, then quickly reversed it to a block, blurting, "My bad." Said a stunned fan in the front row nearby, "That never happens!"

Key dates

Saturday: Kings at Portland - More tinkering by the Kings against a Blazers team now coached by Nate McMillan. Sunday: Vs. Phoenix in Fresno - It may take all four Kings point guards to keep up with Nash.

Oct. 26: Vs. Phoenix in New Mexico - Kings owners Joe and Gavin Maloof should know their way around town.
