In a hunt for the best deal
Sacramento may not be Bonzi Wells' last stop, his agent says.

Bonzi Wells and his agent talk every day.

They talk, of course, about the Kings, the latest game and the progress of the groin injury that stole nearly half of the shooting guard's season. But no matter where the conversation goes, William Phillips knows not to bring up one particular topic - free agency.

He told me, 'If I start thinking (about free agency), it's easy to get into a situation where you become selfish,' " Phillips said. "He said, 'If we win, and we get in the playoffs, everything will take care of itself, so let's not even talk about it.' "

Phillips has no such reservations, mainly because his client has no reservation on a 2006-07 roster. Phillips already has analyzed the upcoming free-agent market. The early outlook is promising enough for Phillips to claim, "You can't tell me two guys that are better than him at his position."

ESPN's Chris Sheridan agreed, rating Wells as the second-best shooting guard on the free-agent-to-be list and No. 12 overall. And while Wells has made clear his fondness for Sacramento, Phillips said his client will stay in the city only if a Kings contract offer makes him just as happy. Wells is making $8 million this season.

"As long as the Kings are willing to step forward and give him what I think Bonzi is worth, then we're going to look at Sacramento," Phillips said. "I know Bonzi enjoys Sacramento immensely. He always says it reminds him of (his hometown of) Muncie (Ind.). ... Those will be factors, but money is going to be an important factor as well."

This will be the second consecutive offseason in which the Kings decide their fate at shooting guard, though the emergence of second-year talent Kevin Martin brings a new twist.

On paper, Wells is similar to former King Cuttino Mobley, who landed a $42 million, five-year deal with the Los Angeles Clippers after he was rated no higher than the third-best shooting guard in the 2005 free-agent pool. Mobley turned 30 Sept. 1; Wells' 30th birthday is Sept. 20.

But whereas Mobley had to adjust to the Kings after a midseason trade from Orlando, Wells' free-agent stock took a hit when he tore his groin Dec. 19. The groin was reinjured in his first game back Feb. 3, at the same Delta Center the Kings visit tonight. Wells, who has missed 30 games this season, might make his first start since then, as Martin has a badly bruised thigh.

Wells and Kings coach Rick Adelman have said the first return was rushed. Since his second comeback March 3, Wells has averaged 26.6 minutes, 9.8 points and 8.2 rebounds, and shot 40.9 percent (45 of 110) from the field. Caution and patience have been collective methods of choice, as Wells has played from 20 to 30 minutes in nine of those 11 games. Phillips said Wells is content with how he is being used.

"As long as they're winning, we're fine," Phillips said. "(Adelman and Kings basketball president Geoff Petrie) have been doing what they said they're going to do (regarding playing time), and Bonzi has no complaints about it. ... He didn't start last year (in Memphis), and that didn't stop (general managers) from calling him. They look at your production per minute."

Petrie has declined to discuss Wells' future, saying, "You can call me in July about that."

Should Wells re-sign with the Kings, Phillips said he's confident Wells will regain his starting role.

"If Bonzi is going into training camp, and (Wells and Martin) are going into camp together, that's two totally different situations (than coming back midseason)," he said. "I put my money on Bonzi versus Kevin Martin in training camp." And money, make no mistake, is what it will be about.

Still not sure on if he'll be back.

I really like Bonzi, but next year depending on how Martin unfolds he might not be a starter. Considering the type of money I think he wants, I don't think you could pay someone that much to come off the bench.

I think it's time to say bye bye Bonzi... He wants a lot of money, and he wants to start over Kevin(who is going to be a better player). Maybe we could S&T him?

Honestly, Kevin Martin hasn't been doing that great. Even in games he's been starting, Bonzi has played more minutes in some of those games. I just don't know how I feel about calling him the starter and the guy we have to mainly rely on at the 2 guard. It's easy for Martin to start iwth a guy like Bonzi backing him up.

I like Bonzi. I like him even more now that I read the article. Neither Bonzi nor his agent are posturing here - it is what it is. Bonzi likes it, but agent is saying show me the money.

I predict we will lose Bonzi for nothing. He is too good a player not to be offered $8mil+ a year by someone. For us to even consider him at that price, both Kevin and garcia would have to suck for the rest of the year.

As an aside, did anybody notice the 8.2rebs a game in 26.6min since coming back from the injury? That works out to 14.8 rebs/48. Which would be 10th in the league, just ahead of Shawn Marion.

Have my doubts he will be back. Think he is going to be sacrificed on the altar of fiscal responsibility. Not at all sure we will be better for having lost him though. In fact think that will up the difficulty level of us improving in the offseason considerably.

he gets that many rebounds because our center isn't in the post lol.

Either way, I don't see us having a swingmen set of Artest/Martin/Garcia/Monia next season.. we'll keep Bonzi or get another vet. (3-4 years +) swingman (bunch of good ones to be out there).

If we can S&T him ..packaged with another good player ...maybe KT or SAR for a Good ---> Great PF/C...

DO IT

I'd like to keep him no matter what it costs. The Wells/Artest duo is a scary matchup for any team. I'm hoping the Maloofs will pony up and pay the man. If all else fails, a sign and trade.

Just another reason I HATE agents. Bonzi has made it pretty clear HE doesn't even want to address this right now. The agent, however, has to make sure he "earns" his pay...

It was Ron Artest's agent who nearly foiled the Artest deal...

that duo is only useful against the lakers, cause martin cant touch odom when artest is on kobe.... but if we can get a point guard that can score like a eddie house/bjax style player that can score off the bench i would gladly say bye bye bonzi..... s&t bonzi for jaric, hudson and change would be nice... whichever point doesnt(hudson) work we trade him at the deadline.... for table scraps....

Me too. I really like Bonzi. I like KMart too, but I think Bonzi is what the Kings need right now. Watching him play with Artest now that he's healthy, I'd like to see what they can do together with a little more time to gell.

You think the Lakers are the only team that fears this duo...........think harder.

Artest/Bonzi wing combo is feared by any team in the league. Big, strong, long, agile swingmen. Who can combine for 5-9 steals and 14+ boards on any night...

but my thing is, we need a back up point and one that has the skills to be a starter..... jaric could do it start at sg and play back up point...... it solves a couple of our bench problems and or poor execution when brad goes into crybaby mode...

Unless he wants the webber contract from a couple of years ago, We should hold on to bonzi. Come on, if it wasnt for bonzi, the beginning of the season would have looked worse than that of the hawks:eek: . I like kevin. But to have a player of bonzi's caliber not on our team is ludicris. We need bonzi's tuffness as well as rebounding. him and artest are what gives our team some moxy.

We can sign one or trade for one, doesn't have to be Jaric and his enormous contract. He wouldn't be one of my top 3 choices, but would be a pretty good pick-up I guess depending on the situation. Unless we give Hart another run, which isn't out of the cards.

I for one, would love it if Bonzi comes back. But if there is way to improve this team overall by trading him away than I would understand. I would not at all understand letting him walk like Mobley, for nothing.

I don't think he's coming back. He's saying all the right things now, but he's going to be 30 and is clearly looking for a big, long-term contract. Since we have KMart, and OG is the easiest position to fill anyway, I think the Kings let him walk.

From what I know, Orlando, Toronto, Chicago, Atlanta all will have sig. cap room. As discussed through-out the season as where some of the top FAs this year could go. Probably a few other teams, but I don't know.

I don't see Bonzi going to any of them though, I'd think if he were to walk, it'd be to a top team or playoff team. Similar thing like Antonio Daniels did with the Wizards, who have gotten back to being a playoff team after looking like they could miss it. Bulls are on the bubble to being a playoff team again, but that's a young team in development (chasing the 8th spot to further it), and are definitely going to draft a young SG with size (along with a big man). Plus if they do make it, it'd be just barely, unlike last season as a 47-win 4 seed team.
