Assists...or the lack thereof...

what's going on?

DMC with 21 points, 19 rebounds (awesome), but ZERO assists?

Reke with 3 assists?

Isiah Thomas coming off the bench to lead the team with SIX assists?

The entire team is averaging 14 assists per game. 14?!?!?! That is last in the league behind the terrible wizards.

The ball hogging and individual play has to stop. This isn't a team. These are a bunch of dudes all trying to play for themselves. It's incredibly pathetic and frustrating.

the kings are also second-to-last in the league in overall fg% at .405. i don't know how many times i've seen 'reke kick out to one of his teammates for an open jumper, only to see it clank off the rim. when the shots start falling, the team's assist rate will climb a bit. but this particular kings team will never be an incredible passing team as currently composed. that said, its unfair to classify them as "ball hogs" or "playing for themselves." do not confuse selfishness with poor shooting/confusion/unfamiliarity. and hey, they just won a game. cheer up...

it's a valid point, particularly for overall team assists, but for DMC to have zero assists and tyreke to have 3...it's a lot more than just poor FG%. Plus poor FG% has a lot to do with shot selection which has a lot to do with ball movement with brings us back to...assists.

It's a combination of things. The team has a lot of shoot first guys, the offense is still tainted by Westphal and there's little trust between players. Guys don't know where their teammates will be and teammates don't know what the ball handler is going to do. Plus, what passes are made are not of even the most average quality. They are rarely in the right spot or come too late.

I think Chuck Hayes being out (hopefully back before end of Jan.) has been a huge loss for the offensive ball movement. He was not only the glue that held it all together but so often got ball delivered to him in the high post off first half court pass. He then made next pass (that's TWO of them almost guaranteed!) often setting a solid screen for Reke or Thornton to run off of or get a pick and roll going with Big Cuz. Fundamental basketball offensive structure, yet something the assist-less Kings have not seen a lot of or as fluid since Chuckwagon went down.

On the Cousins note, i think it has a bit to do with him operating less from the low post. Last season, it seemed as if that was where he got the majority of his assists - passing to cutters through the backdoor and down the lane, and kicking out to 3 point shooters. This season he's taken more of a role player approach where he gets points off of finishing plays or off of rebounds. He still works in the low post from time to time, and IMO he is a pass-first player when he does so. But often there's nobody to pass it to which leads to him looking for his shot.

Also about the cutter. Beno was one of our best backdoor cutters. Tyreke would easily get 3 more assists/gm if Jimmer/Outlaw/Salmons hit some open shots. The team will never be one of the best passing teams/ high assist teams, but I'm more concerned with winning, and I'm willing to give the guys and coach time to grow to prove that they can win with whatever system that they will put in place.

Noone moves when Cousins gets the ball high or low post thats why he isn't getting any assists cause there are no cutters. I think we need to concentrate on the Half court offense. Everyone says they want and like to run so they can run but we need to be ready with a good half court when the running slows down and a large part of the half court is cutters and picks. Movement of bodys off the ball.... Thankfully we are making progress in the last 4 games.

I'm glad someone else pointed this out.

Chuck Hayes has the fifth highest field goal percentage at 41.9%. All other role players are under 39% from the field.
Which goes right back to ball movement... If the Kings made the correct passes or moved the ball more they would get more open shots and that would raise their FG% AND Assists.

People, the low fg% isn't the sole cause of the low assist totals. It has a lot to do with taking bad shots and not moving the ball for a 2nd or 3rd pass.

Seems that many of us have missed clankfest 2012. While low fg% isn't the sole reason for the low assist totals, it's a big reason. Evans should have had a triple double vs. the Bucks. It's not like the passes those players (cough, SALMONS!, cough, JIMMER!) receive are last second bail-outs. They've been in stride rhythm passes that should lead to easy knock-downs.

I really, really think a huge part of our problems is that we don't play inside out. We take forced perimeter shots, not in rhythm, and even with the improved ball movement under Smart, still don't play inside out, and run the majority of our offense from 18ft or more away from the hoop.

We need to play off Cousins. He's not involved anywhere near as much as he should, and last night it was too the point I wondered if Salmons had made a concentrated effort not to pass it to Cousins, even though as a 73 yr veteran of this league, he more than anyone should know the importance of playing inside out.

Cousins hasn't been passing as much as he should. A reason for that in my mind, is that he gets the ball so rarely in the half court he feels he has to shoot, because he won't see the ball for the next 5-8 possessions. But if we play through him, he'll be much more willing to pass. He showed that last year. Let him draw a double, command some attention down low, and force the defense to react, either play him straight up, where most, if any can't guard him, or send help, where we then have the defense moving and reacting to us, and therefor opening passing lanes for us. We won't just have easier passes because of that, but when guys get the ball they'll either be wide open, and hopefully in rhythm when shooting, or since the defense is scrambling as we swing quickly, they'll be larger lanes/openings for our guys to attack.

Getting it to Cousins first, forcing a double, and then swinging it allows the other 4 guys to essentially play 4 on 3. A win for us. But when we don't go inside, that initial double never happens, so even if we swing it around the perimeter, we're still 5 on 5 for the most part, with the defense just switching or fighting through screens. We don't have the defense scrambling after they were forced to double. Instead they sag off a little, watch the ball move, as we pretty much stand still, and when their man gets the ball, they have an easy close out for a contested jumper. I see that far too frequently.

Another aspect of playing off Cousins is we need slashers. We don't have any. Reke rarely slashes, and since he still doesn't have a flip shot/floater or left hand, and isn't a great jumper, probably isn't a good idea. Thornton doesn't slash without the ball. Wish he did, because when he's off he's invisible. Salmons/Cisco/Jimmer/Outlaw don't slash, period. Donte is my only hope on this roster, of someone who's shown flashes of slashing off the ball and finishing. But with an offense which should use Cousins much more, we need to find a guy or two that can slash. Right now just about every single perimeter player we have would much rather stand still at the 3pt line, which is upsetting, but the reality of it.

Of course this won't cure all our shooting woes, as Outlaw and Salmons we never good shooters, and that's one reason I hate having both on this roster. But playing inside out, and forcing the defense to scramble, should help Thornton/Reke/Jimmer/Donte get some easier looks, as well as more in rhythm looks.

But really, when you see where this team dynamic is heading, with Reke/Cousins the cornerstone, and Thornton the key third wheel, and when the offense revolves around them as it did in Tor, it becomes pretty clear the rest of this roster doesn't fit well. Outlaw/Salmons still make no sense, and are pretty much the opposite of what Petrie should have looked for, and Hayes while he might help, should not have been the lone acquisition to a frontline which lost Daly. I guess the saving grace is that as Reke/Cousins/Thornton take over this offense, it will become damn clear the surrounding pieces don't fit, and a move shouldn't be too far away. But we can't go forward with Cousins, who'll be a top 3-5 center within a year or two, having an offense run through he and Reke, without any decent spot up shooters or slashers on the roster, or guys who can even just move the ball.
