Artest Says "Kobe Will Get Shut Down"

Ron did about as good a job as you can do on Kobe but he hasn't come anywhere close to shutting him down. Ron made the same predictions before the last game. Kobe's numbers since Ron started talking about shutting him down:

33 Pts
8.5 Assists
6.5 Rebounds
47%FG

Seasons stats:

35 pts
5.4 assists
4.6 rebounds
44%

Kobe has played better against Ron than he has against the rest of the league. It might be best if Ron just plays basketball and doesn't tease the crocodile before crossing the river. If he doesn't challenge Kobe, maybe Kobe will not play as well. Kobe is obviously a player who thrives on challenges. Best thing to do is be quiet and do the job without drawing attention to yourself.

The first game was against an out of shape Ron with an injury. I prefer not to count that game, and I don't care if Kobe scores 30 as long as he's taking 28 shots to do it.

I just like to correct false misconceptions. :) It's funny how people say "well he held him 2/8 for this one stretch" and they ignore the rest of the game.
Wait, wasn't this supposed to be Kobe's big rebound game??? 12-28, and raising your % in garbage time doesn't exactly represent any sort of misconception. :)

How do you "rebound" from torching Ron in the first game? ;)

Well, IMHO, I think the Lakers' future was mortgaged off with the dealing of Shaquille O'Neal to the Heat, which is unfortunate, because Kobe and Shaq would have been a formidable duo for years to come... you guys won 3 championships, but you maybe could have won 6 or 7 with those two together... but then again, judging by the shelacking the Pistons shelled out against your team in 2004, that may have not been the case.

Still, I think it was a big mistake to trade O'Neal... I think the Lakers team, as we see it now, will be pretty much stuck in mediocrity for years to come, unless they get another big man down low. And for essentially Lamar Odom and Kwame Brown... blech. It can't look too good to be a Laker fan right now. Not bad, you still got Kobe, but just enough to put you in that gray area.

Just curious, what is your outlook on your team and its chances in the playoffs (assuming they make it), as well as in the future?
It will be obviously touch and go for the Lakers as far making the playoffs. The Lakers will not advance far in the playoffs. They don't have enough two way players who play defense to advance this year.

The outlook for the Lakers is always good in the long term. Their history is they go though cycles of winning and losing like every team but they manage to win championships in the up years and that's all any fan can ask for. In the short term it's up in the air. Some personnel moves obviously need to be made to bring in defenders and two way players. Eventually they will be made or a GM will be brought in who can make the right moves.

The Shaq move had to be made. It was made in part so the Lakers would have a future. I have no problem with getting rid of him. Shaq was perpetually out of shape, didn't have enough gas in the tank to win another championship and the Lakers would not have gone anywhere in the playoffs with his diminished skills and his 25-30 million cap sucking contract. I prefer to rebuild now so Kobe still has some years left to play on a championship level team rather than later when Kobe is in his twilight years. It will take a couple years for the Lakers to become contenders again if the right moves are made.

Can't disagree with that. I loved them back in the Johnson-Kareem years, but thought that Kobe and Shaq were selfish and arrogant. But anyway, regarding the GM... Kupchak... not that man.

Also aside from the conditioning/chemistry with team/hip pointer effects, have to remember Ron wasn't guarding Kobe the whole night in the LA game, and that wasn't only a little bit of not doing so. Ron won sometimes, Kobe won sometimes. Ultimately Kobe won against his defenders that night. Tonight, Ron won the match-up. Technically, Kobe had 24 pts on 10-26, and was 2 for 8 in the 4th up to those two threes in the last minute. The last two match-ups before the LA game this year, Ron won, in the 03-04 season, aside from the Indiana defense. Unless it was a team effort for basically both those games, which I don't know. I'd assume it was mixed.

Heck, they don't have enough ONE WAY players.

The greatest offensive players in NBA history "lose" 50% of the time when they shoot no matter who defends them.

Quick question ...i seem to have forgotten..

What was the score again?

Ah yes...interesting..

I'll put it this way- im drunk- re-reading the sentences 5 times to make sure they are spelled right. And im still not immature enough to go on Lakers boards and heckle their fans...

..wow...and we are the ones that won..

Aren't you supposed to come heckle when you won or something - i guess that part confuses me

Needless to say Sanvara...you need to write this down...im only going to state it once...

KOBE GOT ARTESTED

Have a nice evening

Seriously though, it's all right to feel a little bit miffed after a pretty crucial loss such as this one. If you feel the need to represent on these boards to vent, it's totally fine by us, especially since you're doing it in such a civilized manner.

'kay, yeah.

Just talking about the recent Kobe/Artest match-ups, not the history of the NBA of offense vs. defense. ;)

You know, I can scoree 30 on Artest with 100 shots (not likely). Does that mean Artest didn't shut me down?

Kobe EXCEEDED his shooting percentage for the season in his two games against Ron.

You mean 1 game... And that game shouldn't even count, because Ron was just getting used to the Kings, he was INJURED, and he was still out of shape. Also if you're going to bring up the average then why don't you bring up all their career games?

I dont think it was a Kobe Vs Artest game yesterday, it was the lakers vs the kings and the kings were better at it.

If you want to look at Kobe Vs Artest individually then I dont think Arest shut him down, everytime Kobe made a move there was another player waiting for him. On all the screen and roll you could see Brad and Artest right along there with him chasing him out Kobe was passing the ball out. When he tried to drive there were two more kings waiting for him and thats what reduced kobe's shooting % and not Artest by himself.

On the other hand there were a few instances where Artest did own Kobe on the wing where he played excellent defense, but owning him NOT. you dont expect anyone to own or shutdown a player of that calibre anytime. Kobe cannot shutdown TMac, or Shaq cant shutdown Yao, even Mutombo in his great days cannot shut down any centers, Ben wallace cannot shutdown Duncan and so on. But they can make life difficult for players of that calibre and I think Arest achieved that yesterday.

There's no reason to point out small statistics in detail when it is blatantly obvious who won the battle. Artest helped his TEAM to a huge win in a crucial situation, and Kobe didn't. Kobe won the last game, when Artest was only starting to get acquainted with the Kings. I don't know why you're so adamant on arguing this point. I think Artest cares more that the team won than anything, and the team won. End of story.

As stated on the radio earlier today (a quote by Reynolds, IIRC), holding Kobe to 1 point per shot IS shutting him down.

He's too good to really squash, you just have to make him work.

Maybe a better question is who has a better record in the games they played this year? :)

Ponder that one for a while if you want to start comparing their benefit to their respective teams....

That's nonsense. For example, if someone shoots 15-30 for 50% from the field that's one point per shot. Only a moron would claim holding a player to 50% shooting is shutting him down.

Ron had all sorts of double and triple team help on Kobe. He cannot guard Kobe without help over the course of a game.

^^^^^^Exactly.

Just to remind everyone, the topic of this thread is Ron claiming he was going to shut Kobe down after he joined the Kings, not the Lakers vs the Kings, the score of either of the last two games, the standings or any past history before Ron joined the Kings.

I also find it humorous that people say "The first game doesn't count because..." and come up with a lame excuse. Bottom line is Ron bragged about what he was going to do before the first game and said he was going to shut Kobe down in that game. He got humiliated. But that doesn't count? Yeah right.

This reminds me of Ruben Patterson previously proclaiming he was a Kobe stopper. Notice how he doesn't say that anymore? ;)

Ron did a good job with lots of help. He in combination with his teammates did not allow Kobe to go off and torch them like he did in the first meeting. The Kings playing at home had something to do with it as well. Credit where credit is due for playing good individual and good team defense on Kobe, but that's as far as it goes. This "Ron shut Kobe down" stuff is a bunch of nonsense.
