Are we officially going down the drain yet, or not ???

1 - 5 ... the lowliest record in the league ...

Have the Monarch's become old, and not especially talented, has the string played out for Whiz ... ???

Is Jenny making the right coaching decisions ??? ... can she ???

Do we need to hit bottom before we start going up? ... Is it lottery tanking time ???

Or ... are we a couple of healthier bodies away from running off a string of victories ??? and getting right back in the thick of it ... ???

I haven't seen the quotes from last night's game to get a sense of what they all think happened last night.

I spoke to this on Ms Talk last week since that was their topic of the night. It's hard (if not down right impossible) to not look at their record and clutch the pearls. Especially so if you weren't happy with the roster they started or broke camp with.

Throwing last night's game away as the outlier (because that much I do agree with Boucek on in the one quote I did see) this was the first time they got the stuff beat out of them on both sides of the ball. I think they ALWAYS look like that when they have their "we're going to crack down on defense" focus in practice, at least in my observation from last year or in the Boucek era. Or perhaps in the Sacramento era period (minus 97, 98, 05). I'll amend my mantra on the season, they aren't going to beat many teams throwing the ball away 15+ times, giving up a boatload of points off them, AND trying to shoot under 30% on the night. Not just a quarter or a half, but on the night. Meaning all 10 of them collectively tried to shoot under 30% on the game and beat a professional basketball team...on the road.

This time last year they were finding increasingly ridiculous ways to gak up 20 point leads. Then all of a sudden they rip off 7 straight wins before the allstar break. As I recall last year, they had to hit the rock bottomest of bottoms before they figured their crap out.

If they don't look better on Friday, and by better I mean don't get jumped like they just learned the game of basketball, then I'd figure it may very well not get better. I tellya what tho, I'd rather be in the Monarchs' situation than Detroit's right now. I'm not sure the Shock is sitting in any better situation and the Monarchs are at least closer to getting everybody back healthy. To further punctuate that opinion is perhaps the fact that Brunson had one of her better games this season.

The Ms seems to just be fighting themselves for consistency. There is no way, with the numbers they are putting up statistically (at least on the offensive side of the ball) they should be 1-5. No way they should be dominating in the paint the way they are (minus last night's layup drill and LA shootaround) and be 1-5.

It was just frustrating watching the Monarchs play yesterday. No Lisa, no Parker and we still get whooped on? Didn't expect that at all. So...are we going down the drain? I'd say not at the moment, but I definitely see the us going down if they don't start scapping every single possession, every single game...and score more than 47 pts

I guess I should extend my comment and say I'll take them scoring 47 points as long as they keep their opponents to under 47. It's just when they score 47 AND lose by 20 that hurts. The Monarchs are just not a "pretty" team to watch. I am a Monarchs fan, as all of us all here, but if you're just a casual fan of the league, you're not going to enjoy watching them play. They play "ugly", they're scrappy, they play defense. For the sake of the league trying to gain fans, they shouldn't put the M's on TV unless they're in the playoffs.

What I don't understand is this team has a lot of veterans and a lot of veteran's who have played together for a while. Why does it seem so hard for them to get their act together and in sync from the get go? Injuries do happen, but what's the rest of the excuse to go with that? They should be one of the teams getting out fast with basically a stable team.

i hear ya, and i didn't see the game, (neither PHO or LA), but some fans said that the OT game against phoenix was must see tv ...

at the home opener, i had the strange feeling that it was like just a week ago that i had been at the last game ... everything seemed so "normal", NOT like a fresh start, NOT from scratch ... too comfy maybe ... ?

it could just have been me ... but a rude awakening may be in order ... i hope it's already happened ...

To answer the OP, I guess so. The league has gotten so much better while we have remained stuck in 2005.

There is zero reason for this team or any WNBA team for that matter to score less than 50 pts. So I'm going to go hardline and say the 47 is unacceptable regardless of what their opponents are doing or relatedly, their defense is doing.

The shots they were missing to help them get to 25.6% shooting last night were layups and putbacks...in the paint. Jumpers and threes sometimes don't bounce your way, but when you get the ball inside and can't hit a layup...ugh. Despite the size disadvantage, the Monarchs outrebounded the Sparks and COMPLETELY anihilated them on the offensive glass. But the Ms could not hit a ding dang putback or layup to save their lives last night. I think we also saw what happens when they aren't getting to the FT line either.

Re: them not being in sync? What they will say is the reason for that is their system (offensively and defensive....or maybe moreso defensively since they argue their offense is dependent on their defense - I still don't buy that but ok) is interdependent on knowing and trusting where everybody's going to be. That's why they've traditionally started so slowly, they hardly have ever had anybody in camp for camp.

This year was supposed to be different because everybody was scheduled to be back at the start. A funny thing happened on the way to the practice facility tho, Brunson's rehab was slow, Walker's was also slow and Lawson has that weirdness with her knee. I think that played a role in how they came out the gate and the turnovers because they were playing goofy rotations because some players were on minute limits.

PR touched on some of this during his Ms Talk call last week. Missing Ticha hurts, certainly defensively maybe more so than offensively since it seems they haven't had a problem generating offense (which may have been more mayhem given the 3 teams they've faced without her - just throw the ball up the floor and go to the basket). But they are right back to playing goofy rotations to compensate for her not being there and while Brunson is getting back into flow, it seems they are still limiting her minutes.

Their problem isn't talent, it's consistency. Because they've shown how they can play when they play with some semblance of consistency. They've shown what they can do when they try to play well in spite of themselves too. 3 of those 5 losses could have been wins. Last night clearly wasn't one of them, nor was that game up in Seattle that started out the same way until they figured stuff out midway through the first.

this i totally hear ... 12.5 points per quarter ??? to get to 50 ... that SUCKS ... ; )

when i see that in box score, i cringe ...

I agree. This problem has less to do with injuries (all teams have them but haven't been derailed like us) and more to do with TPTB being stuck in 2005. We don't even have one of our better players from 2005, so that's out.

I've said it time and time again. The Monarchs are desperately in need of a talent infusion. We wouldn't be 1-5 if we had a player who could create her own shot off the dribble. Minnesota had that, which is why they stole that game from us in ARCO last week.

Well part of the problem when you keep making the playoffs is that you're never drafting up in the high talent area of the draft. So whose the potential franchise player in next year's draft? :p

San Antonio was able to turn Jessica Davenport and Erlana Larkins into Becky Hammon and Chioma Nnamaka and Camille Little into Ann Wauters. Creativity and being resourceful allows one do to things like that. Unless we get Appel from Stanford (which would mean that we have the #1 pick and/or DeMya retires), we need to be looking at shooting guards.

Oh, and it's been ages since Detroit had its own lottery pick.

I would like to see the Monarchs try to get another 1st rounder next year. We need an upgrade in talent badly. And, we need a guard, who can shoot...

Our last lottery pick was Chantelle Anderson in 2002, but she was a bust. Technically, Powell and Lawson were also Top 5 picks, but we traded for them.

And Seattle hasn't had a high pick in years as well. Though, they were really lucky to have drafted Jackson/Bird back to back, to help them for years to come.

yup, even if we didn't draft in the lottery, we could've done some trades to make the team better. The biggest problem IMO is the love affair for the "2005" team. DeMya hasn't been anywhere near that level. Yo is no longer here....and the league is soooooo much better. We need a shift in focus...a change in direction....an infusion of talent.

Wow... I have been saying this for the last 2 years.
It is interesting that reality is finally setting in. I hope that reality is setting in with TEAM Whiz as well.

I believe that we have talented players. but what we saw last night was unacceptable on every level. The effort alone should have someone packing their bags. It is time for them to a) display that talent or b) be watching the game in the stands next to me.

To answer the original question. We are not down the drain yet. But time is getting really short. The team definately needs a change in attitude. They need to play with some urgency. In fact the entire organization needs to operate with a sense of urgency. And even that may not be enough.

It is time to get on the phone. If you can't trade for players trade for Draft picks.
Clean house...
Send a message to the Sorority girls of Phi Sucka Sucka.

If we lose tonight, we will be knee deep in doo. LA has Parker and Leslie returning in July. San Antonio has Wauters coming back in July. We have ?

wherever we were on the drainometer ... we are more down it now ... not that it's a problem for me ... i still love seeing them play ...

was courtney hurt ? ... boxscore had a dnp coaches decision ...

ticha played .. that's a plus ...

demya ... team high 12 ... why did she only play 25 minutes ... ???

play the hot hands ... sit the cold hands ... let 'em suck air on D ...

and play courtney ... change the coaching to fit the player, if jenny has to, but play courtney ...

there's no reason to lose so many games and sit courtney ... so, at this point, play her, it can't be any worse ... and it might be better ...

I could not agree with you more. Play the big girl--she CANNOT be any worse than the others. I know one game recently she only played just under 4 minutes, and had 4 rebounds. Why have her if we are not going to utilize her?

Thank goodness Ticha is back :)

What on earth is up with Kara Lawson? Krista & Jason both commented on Monarchs talk that it was time to move her back to the 2 spot where she can hopefully start scoring again, and if necessary to let Chelsea run the back-up pg. Something sure needs to change--it's broke & needs fixin!

I said it before and I'll say it again. Just because Kara can play the point does not mean she should. Kara does not look for her shot from the pg spot.

I agree about Courtney. Totally! Play her! Get the ball inside to her. Let her rebound. If you are going to draft a player with certain strengths, play to their strengths.

Arrrrgggghhhh!!
