This is something that I have been thinking about since watching PDA's press conference a while back. A lot of people questioned the kings hiring a coach before a gm but the question was answered with Vivek knowing the coach he wanted and not letting Malone slip away. I accepted that answer and didn't think twice. I was happy seeing Malone's press conference and liked how he seemed to emphasize working hard, especially on defense. Then PDA's conference had him picturing a fast paced good passing team. At the time their views didn't seem to match, but they said they were happy each were there and thought they were a good coach/gm team.
I noticed pre D'Alessandro predraft workouts included gobert (long shot at #7 but showed we were looking at defensive players). Yet when we got our gm, we gave a second workout to shabazz. Draft day, we went with Mclemore who I was totally fine with, actually ecstatic he dropped to us, but instead of going with a defensive big or sf with our 2nd rounder, we went with an undersized pg.
Now in free agency, it was stated that Malone wanted to keep Tyreke. Yet we trade away one of our better defensive players for a pass first pg that is seen as a defensive liability. Not to mention our first choice was Calderon, who also fits that good passer/bad defender image. I will give PDA the fact that he tried to bring in Iggy, but that could be more of knowing him at Denver as opposed to going after a good defender.
These sequence of events made me question how well our GM and coach are working together despite them saying they are a great pair. If you want to build a defensive team but the GM only gives you offensive talent, how is that going to work? Of course by next week we could sign AK47 or another defensive sf, or trade for Asik or get another defensive big and this whole thread would be wasted. But at this point in time I wonder if anyone else sees how our gm and head coach seem to want to build different teams.
