Apparently OFFICIAL - Welcome to Life After Artest!!!

The Pacers didn't own one of our picks, and if they did, you can sure as heck bet they would have been rooting against us.

We have no way of knowing if that would have been true or not. I'm just not that cynical. If you've ever visited any Pacer boards, I think you'll find the vast majority of them were more than glad to see him gone. And they wished us good luck for the simple reason they knew we'd need it.

It's not about being cynical. It's about hoping that draft pick turns out great. If the Rockets miss the playoffs, that's a lottery pick. You're telling me you'd rather have a pick that's in the late 20s over a pick that's 10-15 just because the guy who coaches the Rockets used to coach the Kings?

I hope they go 0-82.

Next season, Rockets losing = good for the Kings. I don't give a crap about warm fuzzies for Adelman. I'm a Kings fan, and I want that draft pick to be as high as possible.

Cheers. I actually like the Rocekts and wouldn't mind seeing them do well. But, I want the #1 pick in the draft. 0-82 works just fine for me.

I think nbrans wins the thread.

Awesome post.

Thanks for prompting Amick to ask about the pick.

I don't think I'd mind if the pick were bumped to 2010, because it's looking like that draft could be richer in prime PG prospects, and the extra ammo could do us more good then.

Sorry to steal your thunder, but you're too slow, nbrans. ;)

Sam Amick replied:

"NBrans, the pick has declining protection, according to Petrie. If the pick is 1 to 15 next year, the Kings don't get it and the protection, hence the phrase, declines from there to the point where the Kings will eventually see it."

I wouldn't complain if the Artest Effect kicked in to the negative, and we ended up with a #16. :)

I'm just glad that we can knock off three birds (Artest, Singletary and Ewing Jr) with one stone in this trade while mustering cap room, young talent and draft picks in this situation. Geoff really made up for the drafting fiasco by parlaying them into future needs in return. It may seem eerily equivalent to the Memphis's side of the deal with Gasol (getting a young player, draft picks, cap room, etc) but if you're a team that's not in contention and/or is wallowing in mediocrity, that's the way to go.

It's so relieving to finally be rid of Ron. I wish him all the best in Houston, but I'm glad he's gone.

Welcome home, Bobby. It's great to have you back.

And welcome Donte, follow in the footsteps of Kevin Martin - work hard every summer - and you will be a very good player. I look forward to seeing you develop over the coming years.

im still not going to celebrate until i see bobby jackson and donte greene on our roster sheet and artest, singletary, and jr are off of ours..than i will take out the party hats...lol
PHP:

ant to be completely honest, looking back on the last few years...i actually think i would rather keep peja rather than getting artest...idk if anyone else feels that way..maybe i should start a new thread

wow. so basically it's lottery protected plus the 15th?

It's as official as it can be. Time to sip Bacardi like it's ya birthday! :)

Yeah, nice when you think about it like that, only Lottery plus one slot. Of course, if the Rockets are pick #27 or something, it's not going to matter how protected it was or not.

It's even less protected in future years, so in a crazy fever dream, we can imagine that the Rockets implode so that it kicks back to 2010, and then their downward spiral continues and we end up with a #11 or something. :p

Yeah, the declining protection picks are farily common anymore -- protects the team giving the pick from total disaster, and that's fine. We get it sooner or later, and if its later, we get a shot at a beter pick. Its all good.

I love this team!!!!!
As will I, always!...But I also wish Ron nothing but the best in Houston...you gave your all every night, even when you were hurt(and others doubted that)...and a welcome back to B-Jax! As well as a new welcome to one heck of a promising young player in Donte Greene!

I'm feeling pretty good right now ... It was getting to the point where I couldnt stand talking about Ron anymore, it was almost like the farve stuff that never ended except artest was just a sacramento thing ..

haha. See you have the right attitude. I was thinking the same exact thing when we first heard about the trade. Hopefully the Rockets somehow fall apart for our draft positioning sake.

I'm very happy with the Rockets right now. For all I care, they're welcome to win 60 games. Sorry to lose Singletary, but, overall, I like this deal quite a bit, regardless of where the pick lands. And I'm SO glad to officially have it behind us now.

I'd be very happy if they win 6 games. Imagine whatever nightmare scenario you want for the Rockets, but if they implode, it's happy days with our new #1 draft pick.

Okay...so I wonder if the 'other considerations' coming our way from Houston is cash...or possibly a future 2nd rounder or something like that??

that's often the PC term for "cash" (although sometimes you see cash considerations). Given we know that money is already involved I have doubts about another pick.

Yeah, figured that much for the most part...kind of like when we traded Mike Woodson and Larry Drew, a first round(lottery) pick, and 'other considerations'. lol *sigh*...that one still sits in my stomach pretty sour...stupid Axelson. lol Anyways...I wonder how much cash we're getting from H-Town?

It's a protected pick, if they get #1 (or anything else above #16), they get to keep it, and we have to wait another year. So, unless you're feeling patient, wish for them to at least squeak into the playoffs.

Sam Amick interviews Petrie, who gives his thoughts on the trade, rumored offers that never existed, and the current roster.

"Being able to acquire another young talent with size and skill, who should be a natural small forward in the league along with a veteran like Bobby (Jackson) and not sacrifice any real future cap flexibility, that starts to become attractive to you."
