And, once again, I think that stupid "Chicken Little" website has had a measurable impact. There is NO way A.J. should have gone home this soon... At some point I think the producers are going to have to consider a "reinstatement" procedure or something.
You're absolutely right, VF. AJ deserved more time, especially over Sanjaya.

...and, why is Antonella still there?

#92
I am appalled at the American public. How, HOW is Antonella still there and AJ is not? It is completely ridiculous. Antonella doesn't even have a passable voice. Chicken Little was better than her. She is HORRIBLE and undeserving.
I agree that American Idol has got to do something about it. Whether it is a wild card thing again or the extreme of taking the vote out of America's hands.

votefortheworst.com

I gree that AI needs to reinstitute the wild card process. But that does not stop the whole vote for the worst crap. I love this show, but watching that Antonella chick go through was painful to watch. HER ATTITUDE SUCKS!!! The judges encourage people to vote, but I think the problem goes deeper than that.

I don't have a problem with VFTW, its the stupidity of the show's voting process that allows it. Even without VFTW the ability to vote infinitely for your favorite has always bothered me. In either event they have been much more vocal about keeping Sundance around than Sanjaya and Sanjaya is the one that really needs to go home (his poor performances aren't entertaining as trash and I think he just needs some seasoning and his own identity).

My late thoughts on the week that was:

My fiancee loved AJ but we both knew he was never going to get out of the semi finals. I loved how every criticism Simon made of him during his last performance was secret code for "gay" without resorting to the usual "Broadway" reference. Regardless his biggest problem was song selection whereas someone like Chris Sligh gets that he can get further with catchy songs and a witty personality than you can with vocal ability.

Nick was another guy who was moderately talented but didn't seem to show any personality and even if he's a better singer he was bound to get ousted in the semis. I think he sealed his fate dedicating his song to his girlfriend, that must turn off the teenie bopper crowd that votes for the dream boat.

I don't understand the Phil love, the dude puts me to sleep, he looks like Nosferatu and I find the skipping my baby's birth story to be far more appalling than touching. I think Blake is the standout amongst the guys. Better than average singer, good looks from my hetero male view point, a little bit edgy but still very pop, dance moves and the fact that he adds contemporary pop elements with the beat box/scratching/scat thing. You could throw a team of talented songwriters around this guy and sell millions which is what I think this contest is really about. Would I buy the album, no way... but millions of teenage girls would.

I just watched part of "Grease: You're the One That I Want." God knows why because these people are NOT good. However, one thing stood out.

The bottom two people. based on viewer votes, go into a "sing off." Then the panel - the three judges - vote among themselves and decide which of the two they will save. I LIKE this idea as I think it could be useful to counteract the ridiculous VFTW votes.

Warning. Do not watch that show. And especially do not watch it if you liked any part of the original Grease.

Oh lord you are so right VF. I'm mesmerized by that show despite its awfulness. I've always been a fan of Grease and if you saw me in my day to day dress you'd probably think I was auditioning for a part. I actually think some of the people are talented but they are totally wrong for Grease. I will cut some slack and give that its a lot more about acting/dancing and singing in a style I find absolutely dreadful but the way they arranged Fun Fun Fun tonight made me want to rip my ears off.

I prefer the way Rockstar handles eliminations because the duet style singoff on the Grease show sort of bugs me. Both are superior to AI but I think AI does it the way they do it for a reason and that's because they don't actually want the best singer to win, they want the most popular person to win.

Still I'd urge everyone not to watch the Grease show at all costs. And if you're passing through NY this summer don't waste your money on this stinky revival either because I guarantee its going to suck.

I don't see the revival making very many waves. Those contestants just don't have the spark IMHO... I'd rather see the original cast come back than have to suffer through even one performance with any of them. I wouldn't be surprised to find out the eventual winner lip-syncs on stage to someone else's voice...

As far as the sing-off duet goes, I was more interested in the idea the judges could overrule the viewers than anything else. AI is going to have to do something like that, I think.

I think almost all the shows besides AI have some form of judge intervention. My favorite was Nashville Star but I only watched the first season and bits of the second or third season once it got to the end where it became a popularity contest. But if I remembered right the judges would cut one person outright and then the there was a viewer vote and they would boot one of the bottom 2 based on the judges. The judges stopped booting outright when they got down to roughly 6 and the final was decided by fan vote. They also did final 3 rather than 2.

Some people think the best way to handle AI would be to vote people off in the early rounds (rather than vote for people). I think that would work in conjunction with having the judges save one of the bottom two, or two of four. Whatever they want.

I'm just not convinced the producers and judges actually want the worst performers off. They keep people talking, they boost ratings for those wanting a trainwreck each week and they are obviously manipulating votes by giving people more non-singing screen time or putting them in memorable spots in the singing lineup. If they really wanted Sundance gone why would they have put him last? Why were Nick and AJ given virtually no screen time outside of their performance while every week we are treated to new info on Sanjaya and how he is coping being out on his own away from big sis. If they want Antonella gone they can blame it on the dirty pictures at any time. Don't be too sure that if it were up to the judges we wouldn't have what we have now.

I am a musical theatre performer and have been for over 25 years and I LOVE Grease Your'e The One That I Want because I can geek out on the memories of me doing the show several times and it touches my heart strings to see these young people out there doing something I wish was around when I was younger.
The remaining contestants are actually very good. VF21 unfortunately you saw a bad night where 2 of the Danny's had off nights. Out of the 4 left on both sides for Sandy and Danny only 2 of each are good enough in my opinion. Max and Austin for Danny and Laura and Ashley for Sandy. Max and Laura being my favorites. And, the producer David Ian is not stupid. If he thinks the show will tank due to it's stars he will shut it down before it opens. He won't lose any more money than he needs to.

BUT I do like the way the eliminate. It saves the American public from making a huge mistake. And a huge mistake is in the works for AI. I wish they would adopt a judge final word like Grease or Rockstar.

Simon Cowell agrees with us. No popularity contest!!!!

Cowell Growls: Simon Cowell ain't crowning no prom queens! He says, "At the end of the day, you've got to find a bona fide recording artist, because without that success, the competition doesn't mean anything. That's where we have to be careful that this doesn't turn into a popularity contest, because if it's a popularity contest, it's like winning Big Brother, and nothing's gonna happen. That's what happened with Chris [Daughtry] and Taylor [Hicks, from season five]. Chris is the one who sold the albums. Taylor hasn't"

While this is strictly opinion, although I know its shared by many, what they say and what they do are completely opposite. Aside from telling the really horrible singers in the audition rounds just how bad they are 75% of what comes out of Simon's mouth is utter bs and designed to solicit certain audience and voting responses.

SLAB

Hall of Famer
Thoughts and such.

Blake remains my favorite American Idol contestant ever...For the first time I am actually rooting for someone to win, and I will be disappointed if he loses.

Chris continued to impress me with his diversity to go from his hip-hop/Justin Timberlake from last week to what he did this week.

Sundance is one of my faves...He has the rocker feel to him, which I really like.

Chris Sligh is one of the better ones, but will his image keep him with the show?

Sunjaya (sp?) improved 10-fild over last week...Is it enough?

So far everyone else has blended in with the crowd, and I haven't been overly impressed.

On an American Idol related note, Daughtry's album is awesome!

Phil was a trainwreck tonight. Granted I just don't get whatever anyone saw in him but I hope this one did him in.

The only person we fast forwarded was Jared so maybe he'll be the other. Everyone except Blake (very solid) and Brandon (ok) was awful.

What a let down. The boys on a whole were not good.

Blake-Good. Fun. Entertaining. Not the best voice, but good.

Sunjayah-He is just too young with no personality or power .

Sundance-Was horrible last night. He needs to stick to the blues.

Chris R.-Again, I can see where he could be popular but the boy band high pitch nasal tone does NOTHING for me.

Jared-Nothing special at all.

Brandon-Best I have heard him, but not good enough.

Phil-Horrible last night. Couldn't carry a tune to save his life. He is better than he was last night.

Chris S-Great voice. Great soul.

My picks for top 6

Blake
Chris S.
Chris R.
Phil
Sundance
Jared

I think Sunjayah and Brandon should go home.

I was very disappointed in the guys performances as a whole. To me at this point only two guys have any shot of winning this thing. The other eight seem to be mediocre AT BEST!!!

PERFORMANCE OF THE NIGHT - Blake Lewis (B+)
This guy is a different cat!! He may be the best performer (a combination of charisma, style, dance, singing) this competition has ever seen. Last night's act, was a little bit Belize and the Boogie Down Bronx rolled into one. SENSATIONAL!!! His vocals may not be spot on, but he gets the job done, and you can not stop watching him.

Sanjaya Malakar (C) Much better than previous two performances, but that is not saying much. It is time son!!! Sanjay has no energy. he is at best a Disneyland performer. And the longer this competition goes on, the more of a girl he begins to look like.

Sundance Head (D+) He took a major step back in my eyes. The judges seem to like him better than I did. He was off key the first half of the song, and the second half seemed to have bad timing.

Chris Richardson (C+) I just don't get him. Again, the judges seems to like him better than I do. His voice was very lightweight. Simon mentioned that "He sold it". i agree. Chris will be in the Top 12, but he will always be a Justin Timberlake clone.

Jared Cotter (B-/C+) I had high hopes for Jared after his first performance. Since it has been a rocky road for him. Last night he sang Stevie Wonder's "If You Really Love Me". There was no spark there at all. he seems to be forcing his pretty boy personality upon the audience (kind of in the mold of last year's Ace Young), but I am not buying it. Maybe because I am not a female. His performance was ordinary.

Brandon Rodgers (C) I loved the song. But his performance was ordinary as well. He is so forgettable that Simon called him Travis last night. Did anybody catch that? The bottom line is Brandon is a background singer, and nothing he has done has showed me that he is anything more than that.

Phil Stacey (C+) Wow. Where can I start. First of all Phil is a Christian inspirational singer, and it shows. I love that, I have absolutely no problem with that. I think Simon does. Simon made a comment last night “I just did not get it”. Those were the same fateful words he uttered to Mandisa last year after she sang Mary Mary. She got the boot the next night. I love Phil's voice, it has power. But in order for America to get it, he is going to have to branch out of his comfort zone to succeed.

Chris Sligh (C+) Chris has a rich voice. His performance last night was not as good as in the past, but he will go through. Chris has this 70’s vibe that is very middle of the road. Last night’s song was not a good choice, but he has enough good will to slide through with this subpar performance.

PLEASE LADIES SAVE ME TONIGHT FROM THIS DROWNING SHIP OF VANILLA MIDDLE OF THE ROAD SINGING!!!!

It's funny how Randy and Paula called Blake's song "current". That song is over 10 years old :)
I think they meant his performance style was current. Which for the most part it is (regardless of what he sings) especially when you compare to everyone else. When you look at the sort of crap that is given to AI winners to record Blake could actually make something decent of it just because he won't try to power the vocals and awe you with the way he hits a note. That's not what pop music is about.

I agree, I missed the most recent show, but I'd have to say Max and Laura are my favorites, too. I particularly like Max. He just seems so real and human. Its like he is Danny. He is th Danny, who happens to sing and dance, instead of a singer-dancer acting the role of Danny. I just find him genuine. Laura has just knocked my socks off with a couple of her performances.

I called in at least two dozen times to vote for Melinda. If she doesn't get into the top 12 I will never watch AI again...

What an incredible performance.

Melinda is absolutely amazing. She has it all. The woman knows music and knows how to make that song her own and soar with it. Hands down the best I think American Idol has ever seen. Now, she just needs to keep that level of confidence up once the song ends. Her whole body language changes when music ends. You can pinpoint the moment. The shoulders slump, the hands go behind the back and her chin comes down eyes up. She HAS to know she is perfection. Let it show girl!!

Lakisha and Gina rocked as well.
Stephanie and Sabrina weren't great but they SHOULDN'T be in trouble.

I think Jordan, Hayley and Antonella are our bottom 3.

I do not think the girls were as impressive last night as they have been, but the top three of the girls are as good as this competition has seen, and they are head and shoulders better than the guys. With that said.....

PERFORMANCE OF THE NIGHT - Melinda Doolittle (A+++)
A hair, and I mean a hair better than Lakisha jones. And the reason why is her energy and sincerity when she sings is very infectuous and transparent. SHE WAS SENSATIONAL LAST NIGHT!!! She is an old fashion throw back soul singer in the mold of Betty Wright of the 70's and Mary J. Blige (WITHOUT THE PAIN AND AGONY) of today. She has passion and a girlish, innocent charisma that just brings a smile to your face. She owned the stage and the song last night.

Jordin Sparks (B+)
Energy, Energy, Energy!! She gets better every week. She is slowly coming out of the sugary, sweet shell that she as a 17 year old has. Pat Benitar's Heartbreaker is a great song and was good for her last night. Well done.

Sabrina Sloan (C+)
Love the song. But she sang a vanilla, personality-lacking version of En Vogue Don't Let Go. Simon says her emotion does not compare to other ladies in this show. I agree. She has got to liven it up and stop being so vanilla.

Antonella Barba (C-)
 Nothing to say.

Haley Scarnato (C)
Olivia Newton John has re-entered the building. MAN!!! She has decent vocals, but she is borrrrringggg!!!

Stephanie Edwards (C)
For the last two weeks, she seems to take a small step back in my eyes. This week step back was bigger than last week's. She was all over the place and her low register was weak. With that said, she has great stage presence and she looks good. She will be in the top 12, but she is going to have to establish her own identity and stop singing like Beyonce.

Lakisha Jones (A)
Lakisha could sing the phone book and win this competition. She was great last night. Her vocals were flawless. My one small contention with Lakisha is that she has shown that she can sing the "Showstoppers" (ie. Jennifer Holliday's "And I Am Telling You" and Wheedy's "I Am Nothing"). I want to see her master the ordinary, the other stuff. Make a regular song her own and sound good....and I think she will win.

Gina Glocksen (B-)
She is a straight up rocker!!! She was on key, but is America ready to support a "Rocker Chick" as an American Idol. Is she going to fall into the Chris Daughtry trap and make every song including Nat King Cole sound like Rock Music. I don't Know.

Purple Reign's Power Ranking - PRE SEASON WEEK #3
1. Melinda Doolittle
2. LaKisha Jones
3. Blake Lewis
4. Jordin Sparks
5t. Stephanie Edwards
5t. Phil Stacey
7. Chris Sligh
8. Jared Cotter
9. Sabrina Sloan
10. Gina Glocksen
11. Chris Richardson (reluctantly)
12. Sundance Head

PREDICTION TO LEAVE TONIGHT - Sanjay, Brandon, Antonella and Haley (Please Lord, let this happen)

I know spoilers are not cool so I won't give out a name, but....

WHAT a shocker!!!
Yea.

I'm happy to see two of them go (one male and one female) because I don't think they deserve to be in the top 12, much less the top 24. The other person, I thought could have stayed also, but the "shocker (and I'll assume we're talking about the same person ;) ) !?!" I'll admit that they didn't have the best performances, but ______ can sing!!!

My only disappointment is that Sundance is gone. I'm very glad Antonella departed. Apparently Sanjaya is officially this year's Chicken Little.
