Thay said Yao got the most votes and that surprised me. I didn't realise he was that popular.

It was because the game is in Houston so that is the big reason.

No big surpriese hear. I think Rasheed will take O'neals spot since he was second in votes in PF.

.
Actually, it is because Yao is from China and recieves a billion or so votes.

Also because Yao and the Rockets have a whole 'nother nation behind them, hence why David freaking WESLEY is above Bibby.

edit: Annex beat me ;)

This an old and fairly week assertion that gets trotted out each year after the AS picks are anounced. The assumtion that a billion or so Chise people all voted for Yao also asumes that the billion or so Chisne all have computer and internet access which is obviously nuts. Im not sure what the numbers really are but I personaly would be shocked if 10% of the population in China had PC and access (I suspect the number is probably closer to 5%)

Last year I remmeber reading that many other players actually recived more online votes than Yao and his numbers were surprisingly high on paper votes. A quick look at his endorsements should make it abundently clear taht Yao is a fan favorite and that many "baller" that NBA junkies consider better palyers have far less apeal with the average American, which takes us to... THE BOTTOM LINE: The players reciving the most votes do not get big numbers from harcore basketball fans... those folks make up a small percentage of over all attendees at games and viewers on TV. The bulk of those that wathc the game, vote for AS's (and People's Choice Awards as well) are CASUAL fans who like a team, go to a few games watch a few more on TV but do not live an breath baasket ball. These are the big blocks of votes that go to the big winners.

I would hypothise that much like predicting political election results that if you counted up the min of TV and Radio coverage for individual players in the 6 weeks runing up to the AS ballot count, you could predict the top AS nominations with out knowing anything at all about the sport.

I wasn't talking about votes coming only from the Chinese over the internet. I was thinking about the internet votes plus the votes from the Chinese who have immigrated to the U.S.A. I don't have an actual number Chinese descent to Yao Ming votes handy.

Yao actually recieved only 4,000 fewer online votes than Shaq in 2004, which would lead me to believe that more than 10% have access to the internet. Internet cafes are very popular.

Agreed. And that is why I can't stand the all-star game anymore.

same ole same ole.

it's too bad camby got hurt, he was rocking the west at center. ah well, it wouldn't have mattered, since the brain dead NBA casual fans would have voted that softy yao into the game. i'm so over yao.

Interesting stuff about the reserves here:

"All-Star reserves will be announced by the coaches next Thursday, and debate already is in high gear as to who is most deserving. Of course, the fans got it mostly wrong with the balloting. So the coaches in both conferences will be instructed on how to select seven backups. They must choose two forwards, two guards, one center and two wild cards. With wild-card selections, the coaches don't have to vote for players based on the positions they are listed on the ballot." Memphis Commercial Appeal

"Don't be surprised if the Western Conference reserves are guards Tony Parker and Mike Bibby, forwards Dirk Nowitzki and Kevin Garnett and center Pau Gasol with the wild cards being Shawn Marion and Elton Brand. That leaves Carmelo Anthony, Ray Allen, Marcus Camby, Baron Davis, Andrei Kirilenko and Mehmet Okur among those expected to be snubbed." Memphis Commercial Appeal

"In the Eastern Conference, expect the reserve list to include guards Chauncey Billups and Richard Hamilton, forwards Chris Webber and Paul Pierce and center Ben Wallace with the wild cards being Gilbert Arenas and Dwight Howard. Who's on the snub list? Michael Redd, Vince Carter, Jason Kidd, Zydrunas Ilgauskas, Chris Bosh and Antawn Jamison." Memphis Commercial Appeal

Can see the two Jazz left out, Baron Davis is great, but he's had ankle problems for a bit now, Ray I don't know, Camby I cannot see being left out (he best make it), Carmelo I could see making it. Can't see Carter not making it, Redd I don't know (he's been really good, but relating to the other swingman involved and their teams), Kidd who knows, Z no, Bosh probably not, ditto Jamison.

Yao's vote comes from China, im pretty sure Jason Hart could start the all-star game if he was popular here in China.
