Ailene Voisin: Bring back Jerry Reynolds

http://www.sacbee.com/kings/story/1905425.html?storylink=omni_popular

The coach the Kings wanted didn't want the Kings. So, OK, that's cool, and that leaves three. Tom Thibodeau. Kurt Rambis. Paul Westphal.
I want to propose a fourth: Jerry Reynolds.
That's right. Bring back Jerry. Sound the brigade. Hit the rescue button again. Summon the longest-tenured Kings employee out of the television booth, hand him a cape and a pair of tights, and let him fly into the locker room for another one-year tutorial, for a few totally pragmatic reasons.
He works cheap. He has the résumé. He is too old to take guff from the players or be micromanaged by his boss. The community loves him. Plus, and perhaps more importantly, he buys you a year (with a crummy team) before Byron Scott or some other higher-profile coach becomes available.
No, unless Petrie suddenly puffs out his chest and considers big personalities such as Mike Fratello, Dwane Casey or Bill Laimbeer for the job, Reynolds, the second-most famous hooper from French Lick, Ind., trumps the competition.

She's gotta be crazy. That's it. She has finally, and totally, lost it.

Then again, it could all be tongue in cheek.

Nah! I think she's just nuts.

:p

You might be missing the subtext here -- this isn't about Jerry Reynolds at all, this is about Ailene being pissy because Geoff apparently isn't going to cater to her fetish for a big ego coach (she wanted Larry Brown, Bill Laimbeer, etc. Always hated Adelman's low key.). So if Geoff isn't going to hire one of her big ego dream hires, then she suggests something ludicrous as a backhanded way of demeaning the guys that Geoff is actually considering. It also of course involves her normal WNBA fetish. Just another column that is all about Ailene and her fetishes rather than anything reasonable. I suppose we can consider ourselves fortunate that she isn't into S&M, because she would probably feel compelled to share her adventures in that realm in her columns too.

Reynolds himself said coaching was killing him in his book. Why in the Lord's name would he subject himself to more torment at this age, when he has a great job and two roles more fitting with his pace? It just speaks to pure embellishment and lack of imagination. Actually, maybe too MUCH imagination...

And lastly, Jerry knows it would be a thankless task at this stage. His reputation has been saved by his current position, and he wouldn't want it any other way.

Good to see that 35 readers have already posted, telling her that she's out of her mind. It needed to be said.

She did get one supportive comment, but considering that 1/17 of the population is seriously mentally ill, she might have gotten twice that many.

The one thing I can say for the idea (and I really mean one thing) is that it would leave us in contention to grab Byron Scott next summer -- if we really think Scott is that great. By grabbing a guy who isn't basically a one-year interim coach (be it Jerry or somebody else) we essentially pass on Scott.

But that's probably just the way it is. No Byron Scott for us.

Besides, who would be there to make Grant listenable?

The article was laughable. I think Bricky hit it on the head. She was demeaning the coaches that are under consideration by suggesting Jerry would be just as good a choice. It was also demeaning to Jerry, suggesting that he is and was, no better than a one year fill in for someone better. Oh yeah, she tried to put some icing on her burnt cake with some platitudes about Jerry.

Its a damm shame that she's still on the staff and they've let Coop and Kriedler go.

Jerry, who is a lot brighter guy than some people give him credit for, is probably sitting at home wondering what the hell that was all about.

And while my personal verdict was out on Marty Mac, he could often get quotes from the players and developed a genuine rapport with our higher profile guys over the years, while it seems Aileen hears a lot of whispers on the QT, sometimes not even from team sources. Another the Bee let walk.

Either she’s just trying to get people to talk about her column or she really believes in the things that she says.

Jerry Reynolds out of all people..lol That’s just hilarious. He should just stick to other things and I think Geoff might feel the same way.

Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha...:D

Very funny, Aileen. As long as we're being ridiculous here, why not have Petrie take over as coach. Actually, that would make more sense because he put this underachieving roster together and he can coach it himself.

We're just not going to get a big name coach here right now. Eddie Jordan is too established now to come here as our team stands right now. The best we're going to get is a retread like Westphal or an up and coming assistant like Thibodeau or Rambis.

I have wished this punishment on Geoff myself many times. But I guess he has enough pull to stop it from happening.

Geoff Petrie should have taken over the team after Theus got fired to finish out that season, kind of like Kevin McHale with the Timberwolves. Then look for a coach in the offseason.

No Brick, I got it, I am just wondering why the heck she bothered writing it and which editor actually thought it was a good idea to put it in print.......

I lol-ed hard at the thread title. Why not just make it a sticky, you know that Aileen will provide the content.

I actually like JR. Too bad he had to be dragged into AV's column. Even if you don't like him, he didn't deserve that.

Yep that's real bright to suggest an interim coach and send a message to the fan base that the tank is on from game 1. Think Arco was empty last season?

I think they better start the drug testing at the Bee in the sports department.

Good god she couldnt have been serious with this one. Im not usually one to say who should be fired and who shouldnt but...

Jerry is on the radio with the Rise Guys right now - says AV's article was very embarassing. He does not want to coach, and if he did he would have pursued coaching jobs long ago.

He said something along the lines of "if nominated I will not run and if elected I will not serve." :D Funny guy.

Says other coaches are better and he doesn't have the energy to coach anymore, or the drive.

Ailene, what the HELL are you smoking!?!?
