SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Kings coach Rick Adelman believes the Seattle SuperSonics are showing too much aggression and doing too much acting in the playoffs, and he wants the officials to start paying attention.
Adelman plans to send a videotape to the NBA offices illustrating his biggest complaints about the officiating in the first three games of Sacramento's first-round playoff series against Seattle.

And Evans -- you talk about Vlade [Divac] being a flopper? This guy is taking it to a whole new level. He goes down when the air conditioning comes on. Rick Adelman on Seattle's Reggie Evans

Adelman is particularly steamed by the rough-and-tumble style of Danny Fortson and Jerome James, and Reggie Evans' flopping disturbs him as well. The Sacramento coach thinks the referees aren't paying attention to the darker side of an otherwise entertaining series.

"I tell you, we've looked at all three games, and it's going to the league," Adelman said after the Kings' workout Saturday. "It's too consistent. They've allowed too much to happen. It's ridiculous what they're allowing to happen. ... After three games, someone should look at that, and when the officials come in here [for Game 4], they should be aware of that."

The officials called 37 fouls in the second half of Sacramento's 116-104 victory in Game 3 on Friday night, which cut Seattle's lead to 2-1 in the best-of-seven series. The game was particularly physical by the standards of two high-scoring teams that often struggle on defense.

The Sonics transformed themselves from a lottery team to the Northwest Division champions this season, and their new emphasis on physical play often was cited as a big reason. Though Adelman praised Fortson and Evans for "doing their jobs," he believes their play often crosses the line.

"I mean, these guys come in there and they're shoving, and they're pushing," Adelman said. "Jerome was pushing, and Fortson, that's all he does -- makes free throws and pushes, just mugs people. We've got to combat that, but I think it's got to be looked at a little bit more. I know the playoffs are physical, but I've been told they're no different than the regular season."

Fortson has been an agitator in each of Seattle's seven games against Sacramento so far this season. The veteran forward got five technical fouls in the clubs' four regular-season meetings, and he has two T's in the three playoff games.

"That's all he's in there for, is to push and shove, especially on the boards," Adelman said. "And Evans -- you talk about Vlade [Divac] being a flopper? This guy is taking it to a whole new level. He goes down when the air conditioning comes on.

"They're doing their jobs, but I think there's times when they go overboard, and I think the officials should be aware of that."

Adelman cited one particularly egregious instance when Evans fell down after a tussle with Sacramento's Brian Skinner.

"It was like he dove into a pool," Adelman said. "I looked at that, and I ran it back [on tape], and I said, 'What is he doing?' They didn't call it, thank goodness."

Adelman made his comments several hours after the Sonics' practice. Sacramento hosts Seattle in Game 4 on Sunday night.

On the other hand, the Sonics believe Fortson has been hit with too many minor fouls.

"We felt like they were calling the fouls on [Fortson] with quick whistles," coach Nate McMillan said Friday night. "I thought the technical he got [for a scuffle with Corliss Williamson] should have been called on both of them. It should have been a double foul, but every [call] seems to go against him."

Ah...the playoffs. :)

I really wish we wouldn't whine about it though. Seemed pretty obvious the officials had already had enough of Fortson last game.

Gotta Love Rick:D

I just hope Adleman's comments do not backfire. I agree that it needed to be said, I just do not want it to look like he is whining. I thought that we had been a little better about that the past few games.

That Adelman just cracks me up!!:D

NBA refs suck and both teams think they suck. It's kinda lame that he is doing this, like its gonna make any difference. Oh but at least he will be heard..

Well, its well-timed to try to get that all important edge in Game 4 where you figure maybe just a few little things might turn it, and the sad part is that in the NBA the tactic sometimes works. Still rememeber in 2000 when we pressed the Lakers to a deciding Game 5 largely on the basis of Webb playing huge help defense on Shaq and repeatedly swooping over to block his shots in Gms 3 and 4 in Sacto. Well, PJ whines to the league about it being illegal defense before Gm 5. And sure enough on one of the first possessions of the game the refs call an illegal defense on Webb trying to help, and it changed the whole tenor of the game, and the series.

I agree Brick it could help us, it seems he took a page out of the Phil playbook..

-Start Rant-
The sad part is that a coach feels he has to do this to get an edge. Of course the game is fast, these old 110 year old refs have trouble staying with 30 yr olds but... Just call the game the same on both ends every single game"

I can take some ref mistakes but its outright obvious when they are trying to call for a certain team.

Too late. ;)

I don't think PJ 's whining was the reason for the 27 point loss by the Kings in 2000.

There sure seemed to be a lot of quick whistles last night that weren't there in the first two games. I'm not sure if Seattle was playing differently or they were calling it differently.

Watching Fortson under the boards is like watching an NFL running back.

While I agree it's detrimental for the players to whine about officiating (especially when the ball is still in play), I think it's part of the job description for coaches to whine about officiating, all the best ones did. I remember stories about how Phil Jackson would send tapes and hold mini-press conferences about calls and non-calls during series.

This reminds me of last years playoffs, when the KIngs were facing Dallas.

Mark Cuban sent tapes to teh NBA League office and said that Webber was traveling a lot and they weren't calling it.

i'd rather he send a tape in about james taking 50 steps to the hoop. that man travels more the a nomad!

lol

He takes at least 3 steps after almost every rebound.

And it was true too, webb had gotten into a bad habit there. Refs were letting him slide as long as no one complained, but technically Cuban was right.

I think the refs already have it out for Fortson (for good reason). Their attention oughtta be drawn toward James, that's what's killin us.

I think Adelman is actually afraid someone will be injured or suspended if this stuff continues. That's why he is whining to the League. His guys have had so many injuries, Adelman is worried. If the referees allow games to continue when things get extremely rough, it escalates to injuries, and or, suspensions. Sometimes the more passive teams (old Kings)simply lose. I think chicken coaches count on that.

IMHO, Popovic and Sloan are the gurus of the Western Conference in chicken play. I'll bet they routinely instruct their players to do this sort of stuff. Some Eastern Conference teams used to subsist on cheap-shot thugery.

I dont know what to think, i want the games to be called faired , but this seems a little too whinish for me.

Agreed. It may very well be effective, but I really don't like it any more when we do it than when PJ does. Nor do I like the idea that coaches cna or should be able to politic for changes in the way the game is refed mid-series. Feels weasely. Just man up and play.

True. We were just discussing Cuban in a thread earlier today and agreeing that he's a whiner who tries to affect outcome when he sends tapes to the league. I do not like that he does it, and I especially don't like it when calls change to his team's favor for his having done so.

I will not be a hypocrite just because it is reported to be Adelman now employing this tactic. It is whiney for Cuban and it is whiney for Adelman.

I agree.

I don't think it's a matter of whining.

This is the playoffs and a couple of players on the Sonics are repeatedly and blatantly breaking the rules. I see no problem at all in pointing it out...

I do NOT think Rick Adelman is trying to gain any kind of unfair advantage and I'm really a little surprised a couple of you seem to be implying that he is.

IMHO there is a huge difference between Adelman sending tapes ONCE and Mark Cuban having them delivered before or during every single round of the playoffs the Mavericks have been part of.

And, if that makes me a hypocrite, then hand me that big red H.

Whatever it takes to win.

With the win the other night, and the humor in the quote, it doesn't come off too much as sour grapes, so hopefully that plays into our favor. Better for Adelman to be the one to say it and to say now, then have the players say it.
