A note from Kevin Martin

Zanesville High is retiring his jersey (and from what his Grandmother has told me, they are also putting a Kings jersey in the trophy case alongside of the High School one) Here is a note from the Ohio paper, written by Kevin.

I am deeply honored that Zanesville high school is retiring my jersey and number, a jersey I wore for Zanesville with great pride and love. I loved playing for my school, and for our loyal and loud basketball fans.

There have been some amazing people in my life that I'd like to thank -- people who helped to guide and teach me about finding my place in this world.

My parents, brother, and grandparents, who have always provided a home full of love, support and discipline. They are my true heroes.

My college coach, Steve Shurina, who made the bold decision to let a skinny freshman from Zanesville lead his senior-laden team, and who challenged me to get better each year than I was the year before. And my Catamount teammates, who selflessly played alongside me and genuinely cared about my future.

My personal coach, David Thorpe, who told me that being a first round NBA pick doesen't have to be just a dream, then taught me how to make that dream a reality.

And my agent, Jason Levien, whom I can never thank enough for his honesty and devotion to my success.

But I owe a special thank you to my Blue Devil teammates and the fans at Zanesville High. And to the best coach I've ever had -- Coach Scott Aronhalt. Coach Aronhalt's program demanded so much from me, and taught me so much in return, that his lessons will be ingrained in me for the rest of my life.

You may see "Sacramento Kings" on my jersey, but I'm really just a Devil in disguise.

Thank you, Zanesville High School, for all you have done for my family and me, and I can't wait to get down there and see all of you real soon.

With great love and respect,

Kevin Martin

"Devil in disguise" - That goes a long way towards explaining that impish grin he seems to have at times.

:D

Thanks for sharing, KG -

Congratulations to Kevin!

Proud Grannie, gets the shout out;) Your family should be proud, not just that Kevin has made it to the NBA, but that he turned out to be a fine young man. Smart, polite, humble, respectful and impish. A fine job was done raising that boy.

When Kevin got drafted there was a picture of his family celebrating at a restaurant when it was announced that he would be a King, just out of curiosity how many/who pictured are with us in this forum?

I think she's asking how many of the relatives pictured with Kevin are now members of our forum.

I don't know. To be honest, I don't remember that picture. And unfortunately, since the board crashed after that, I don't know if it's available anywhere.

Maybe we should ask Proud Grannie or OHSacFan?

Congrats to Special K! He seems to have his feet on the ground and a good head on his shoulders, must be those Special people he has in his life.

:( The ceremony and game were postponed until Feb 5. We are getting pounded with snow storms right now. A lot of area events have been cancelled because of the weather.

It must be nice to be spoiled with nice weather most of the time. I guess when it does get cold it makes you appreciate the warmth. Over here in the northeast part of the country (not to far north though) we see all types of weather from it being 100+ degrees in the summer to the 7 degrees it was last night before the snow hit.

I wish I llived someplace warmer like CAli or Florida. Hopefully after college I can move some place warmer.

Having lived in both Philly and Cal (N + S) not to mention NY and DC, gotta say stay where you are BBallGrl. Except for the summers when all that stickiness annoys me (I prefer a healthy desert blast of dry heat anyday) all of that "nice" whether will bore you to tears. :)

FYI....concerning the article asking about who was in the draft night picture..
the only two people visible were Kevin's grandmother, Maxine Martin and his dad who was shown shedding tears of joy while being embraced by a friend.
"Special K" needs to be given a great deal of credit for listening to the people who loved him and helped to mold him into the person he has become. We had the easy part, advising, he had to put it to use. He could have just as easily turned a deaf ear. He did good!!!

He must have had a lot of support, he's made it this far... I thank you Proud Grannie for supporting Kevin all the way! Look how far he's gotten! :D

Yeah but it's times like this when the high for the day is like 25 and the wind chill makes it feel like minus whatever and Temple won't cancel classes even though its at least 10 inches of snow outside and now it takes at least an extra 30 min. to get there that I wish I was some place, any place it doesn't matter, sunny and warmer with palm trees.
