Similar to what the SF Giants went through. The failing GM fired the manager to buy himself more time. Failed to show it was the coaches fault in the following season and then got fired himself.

All this talk about Fox running Brown out of town and Vivek being Vivek.

The more likely and obvious answer is Monte used his lifeline(fall guy) to buy himself more time to show he hasn't run out of ideas or that he has built a perfectly balanced roster and Mike didn’t know how to use it.
