30 for 30: Once Brothers

Did anybody else watch the ESPN special about Vlade and his relationship with Drazen Petrovic? I didn't know any of the history going in...but it was really well done. You could tell that situation beat Vlade up pretty bad. Makes me respect him even more!

BTW, I don't know if this post belongs here or not, I just wanted to share.

Man, this one was a good one. The story of the Yugoslavian national team and relationships strained and torn apart by the civil war which split apart the nation. It focused in on Vlade Divac and Drazen Petrovic. The aspects of regret, things left unspoken and things yet to be which was ended with a premature death really hit home. It's also sad to see peoples so divided still to this day due to national conflict. I hope we can all learn some lessons from hearing their stories.

Yeah I saw it. Very good episode. I remember Vlade and Toni Kukoc being on the outs while they were in the NBA but didn't really know why.

That Yugoslavian team with Vlade and Drazen was one of the main arguments that it's time to allow the US to send NBA players to international competitions, leading to the first Dream Team in 1992.

This 30 for 30 was the best so far. I had no idea all that was going down. The people that are doing these shows are doing a great job. The only other 30 for 30 that I have seen was run Ricky run. It was also pretty good.

Well, the documentary shot on the streets of Zagreb suggested that Vlade didn't get much of a warm welcome in Croatia 20 years later. I guess the long memory of the Croatians is just another lesson to be learned from the documentary/situation.

Vlade didn't need any of this. He doesn't have to prove what kind of human being he is. He did it for a friend who stopped being his long time ago. But then again it wouldn't be Vlade.

This movie has nothing to do with politics. It hasn't been made for political purpose or self promotion.

This was a great documentary! Sort of Romeo and Julia (different type of love though) conflict. I still remember watching that team in 1989 in Zagreb playing. They averaged 22 years. The oldest starting player, defensive specialist Jure Zdovc, was 25, followed by Drazen, all of the others still had mamas milk on their mouth.

But did they play.

The documentary was a little simplistic on some subjects but that is because they did not want to stray from the main subject.

Too true. I love Vlade and see no reason why he would "need" to promote himself, anyway. Its not like he left basketball and people forgot him or he hadn't created another life for himself. He has done so much for so many and I imagine he will do so for the rest of his life. He's never been a publicity seeker.

People can choose to forgive and not carry hate forward, not pass it on to succeeding generations either. Its not easy, but it is a choice to not let go. I was very moved by the story. The visit to Zagreb seems to have been cathartic for Vlade. I hope he is more at peace in his heart now.
