2023 NBA Draft Omega Thread

I'd say trading a FRP to free up salary as a small market team a week before free agency isn't exactly a low risk move either.
I would agree. We shall see though I think a good player was available and was interested to see who he picked. Free agency, if you can get them, is less risk than drafting.

This happens almost every year. Think about how many lottery picks we hoped would lead us back to the playoffs and where those guys are now. I like a lot of propects still on the boards and some of the guys we just missed on but picking at #24 the odds were against us finding even a solid Rotation player. Most of these players don't live up to their potential and get replaced with a new set of rookies.

I'm a little disappointed but until we know who the cap space is for, I'm not really for our against the Dallas trade. I like that we have more cap space for the summer of 2024 but I'm also nervous Monte will overspend on one of this year's free agents instead.
He has to spend it this year or it’s a total waste. It probably would have been easy to get off Holmes contract next year as an ender. Kuzma is a better player than Barnes and will make us better if he is the guy but he for sure stunts Keegan. I’d rather Keegan get the shots and we spend the money on Bruce Brown but we didn’t need this kind of space to do that. Worst case scenario Monte bumps Sabonis pay up 7-8 mil and then extends him at 140 percent of 28 or 29 ala Turner

James Wiseman was a #2 pick and he's barely able to stay in the league. Patrick Williams was #4 and barely able to stay healthy to contribute. Where's #13 Kira Lewis Jr? Or Aaron Nasmith?

99 out of 100 times I'd pick someone proven to work in the league first. But maybe that's just me.
But O-Max could be a good player! He could even turn into a guy worthy of being signed in free agency!

You're missing the point that not everything is a super short term game and whether you disagree on him being a worthy pick that's your opinion but I don't share that perspective I really thought that guy would be a good fit and fit well with what we're building.

No need to trash it

Right but it's premature to react now based on a worst-case scenario. We've still got months of TDOS (the dreaded OG trade situation) for that.

People tend to get way too focused on the .01% of late FRPs that randomly turn into stars but for whatever reason, the #24 slot is especially bad when it comes to finding good pieces.
Excuses.

There's players that are drafted all over the draft that turn out to be good players

I don't think his shot was broken, so I think he'll improve at the NBA level.
Not broken, but his shooting has been a bit all over the place in the past 3 years. He had his best statistical 3pt last year at 37.8% but his worst FT shooting year at 65.3%

One thing I noticed was that he didn’t always look for his 3pt shot. A bit of a floater where he’ll get the ball wide open at 3, and start to dribble and try to run a set without thinking of just taking the shot.

Hopefully he figures it all out with the Kings. Good basketball player for sure

Yeah but later picks tend to take longer to be good enough to help a team. Monte decided he'd rather expedite the process. Will it work? Who knows. But it's not the worst thing to try considering how open the league is right now.

Yea I'll keep an open mind I just don't really know who he plans to target with that cap space I don't see a free agent that's a huge get for us.

I'd love to see us use another future 2nd and go get TJD to close this draft. Colby Jones, TJD and clearing Holmes? I could live with that
We're getting to the point in the draft where things start to feel...directed. He may be ours already, and we're just waiting for #54 to make it official.
