2021 NFL Draft Open Thread

As a Bears fan, I am ecstatic we landed Fields. I just hope we don't ruin him. He dropped for literally no reason, a lot of easily debunked criticisms of him pre-draft. Has been number 1 on my QB rankings for a long time, yes even ahead of Lawrence.

I would have ranked Fields over Lawrence too, or at least as 1b. Congrats on landing a top QB! All the dysfunction in Green Bay the last few days probably suits you just fine as well!

I had a feeling from the beginning that Lance would be the pick and then all the Mac Jones stuff happened and everybody said Justin Fields was sliding so I started watching a lot more footage of all 3 and came away with the impression that Fields was the best pick. But I also think Trey Lance is extremely impressive, risky but impressive, and if he can carry over what he did in college to the NFL then the Niners just got a lot better.

As well as Shanahan's teams have run the ball, it's fun to think about how dominant Lance could be in a play-action situation where the defense now has basically two running backs to account for. You probably also got that with Fields but the one thing with Lance that really jumps off the tape is how hard he is to bring down in the open field. Watching a QB shake off multiple defenders and stiff arm defensive backs is video game type stuff. That's where I think quality of competition is a factor but I don't know how to judge that fairly. He's going to have all the pieces he needs to be successful in San Francisco so whatever happens I think we'll see the best that Trey Lance has to offer.

A couple interesting snippets from this very good article (lots more in there):

How Kyle Shanahan, 49ers targeted Trey Lance: 'We didn't tell anybody' – The Athletic

The 49ers knew they had to bolster the position after Jimmy Garoppolo’s injury-riddled 2020 season, one in which he was forced to the sideline in two of his six starts. That sent them on a high-profile pursuit in which they considered trading for Matthew Stafford, looked into free agents like Andy Dalton and flew across the country to watch Lance, Alabama’s Mac Jones and Ohio State’s Justin Fields.

It was like a reality show: “Who Wants to be the 49ers Quarterback?” Lance was the winner, and to hear Lynch and Shanahan tell it, the competition wasn’t nearly as close as it was portrayed. The 49ers’ power duo said they fell for Lance immediately and knew who they would be picking two weeks ago.

As soon as San Francisco made its dramatic trade with Miami to acquire pick No. 3 on March 26, prominent national reporters linked them to Alabama’s Jones, whose accuracy and pocket poise seemed well-suited for Shanahan’s style.

Wrong, Shanahan said.

“I was in Mexico the day we made the trade, and within hours there’s at least two people out there speculating what their opinions are, that we’re taking Mac Jones,” he said. “Ever since then I’ve watched every single person assume that was accurate and that those weren’t opinions but fact. We didn’t feel that way from the beginning.”

Contrary to speculation, Shanahan said he wasn’t seeking someone who played while tethered to the pocket. Lance is 6-foot-4, 225 pounds and ran for 1,100 yards and 14 touchdowns during North Dakota State’s undefeated 2019 season. His highlight reel is full of him running past — and over — defensive backs and linebackers.

The Broncos having an all-time wtf draft as a team doing everything it can to avoid getting a QB for some reason.

Bears having a nice draft. Traded most of their picks but a good draft considering their situation.

I want Asante Samuel Jr because I remember that name. Lmao

Pfffff about that. Thanks, Chargers.

Loved pops until he dropped the easy money interception that would have clinched 19-0. He has replaced Bill Buckner in my OMFG what could/should have been HOF.
