2009-10 Kings draft position thread

My first thought is how utterly horrible he played tonight against West Virginia. Maybe he just had an off game (as did virtually his entire team) but the tough D laid on him and Isiah Thomas was flat-out suffocating. Thomas was totally outclassed by the longer armed (and just as quick) Mountaineers back court. Pondexter might make an NBA team, might not - but his talent nowhere near equals his high school teammate Brook Lopez or probably even his brother Robin IMO.

Believe it or not I did the same thing to him in High School when he played for San Joaquin Memorial. He's much better than he was in High School, but I don't think he will be an effective NBA player yes he's playing in the NCAA and I'm watching him, but his body is not developed enough and he's mentally weak. I would be happy for him to be a king just because I know him, but it'd be a wasted pick really.

You misunderstand me. I don't care about losses, but I don't care about the draft, either, and I don't grok the glee of trying to get a high draft pick when the only guy thought to be a can't-miss prospect plays the same position as our best player now.

DeMarcus Cousins? I'm not convinced he's an NBA center.

I'm curious how many 6'11", 275 LB powerforwards you've seen. He has the size of a center. He has the height of a center. He plays primarily under the basket in the low post like a center. And, believe it or now, for Kentucky, he actually plays the center position. I guess we just share a different vision..

I agree with you.

The concept of pg/sg, sf/pf, c is very archaical in today's NBA, and I'm not trying to pull a Jerry and say all kinds of nonsensical crap, nor am I going to spout about how Tyreke isn't a pg, hes a "basketball player (btw, please stop showing that damn mix clip where he says that, it's annoying as hell. I get it Maloofs)." But today, most NBA teams are built on:

Facilitator
2 Swingmen
2 Power guys

Now, obviously that is simplifying things, but if you care to take a look around the NBA and not just the Kings, it's pretty easy to see that the PF/C pos are interchangable depending on tempo, matchups, etc. Some PFs play a lot of C, some Cs can be called PFs.

Love/Jefferson: Jefferson is a center, but the Love "looks like" a center more.
Randolph/Gasol: Randolph is built more like Jefferson, but he's a PF.
Bosh plays more like a traditional C, but 3pt happy Bargnani is their C
David Lee is undoubtedly a PF, but he is successful playing as C as well.

...and on and on and on. To sum up, it's not about what position you play, but does the guy next to you fit the WAY you play, and are you able to match up defensively with the guys on the other side?

If all 7' footers could guard point guards through swingmen, you would see a 7' team. That's partially why Tyreke can exist at the 1; he doesn't give up a lot in terms of quickness and speed to the little guys.

He'd be a nice backcourt mate for Evans, but I don't know if he'd really be worth a lottery pick.

I agree with you as well.

I was actually able to see most of Cousin's last game and I saw a lot of promising things in his game.

Sure, he is not going to dominate right when he gets into the NBA, but I can see him in time being a great Center.

Also, I liked Patrick Patterson. If we drop too low then we might have to take a look at him.

Update: as noted, a couple of teams that are slightly behind us in the rankings suffered wosses, but Detroit discarded an early lead to lin over the Nets, which was very disappointing. Minny, Washington and the Knicks also got lins.

If Detroit's going to tank away the rest of the season, getting any higher than 6th is going to be very hard. The Bullets, errr, Wizards have lost 14 in a row, and without Arenas, I bet they can keep it up. But I don't want to lose any ground.

I was disappointed with Detroit's loss, but if we can get into a position where we don't have to worry about getting passed by or ending up in a tie with Indiana, Philly, NY, and LA then I'll be happy. I'd love to wrestle that 5th spot away from Detroit, but sole possession of 6th is far better then some of the other possibilities out there.

Ya know, the messed up thing with NY losing is they have NO reason to tank... and it sucks the Jazz, who are a playoff team, are gonna benefit big time.

Please especially don't let the Knicks get a worse record than us...

How about we trade them Donte Greene straight across for Kirelenko and the the Knicks first round pick. They save a ton of money with witch to resign Boozer. We can absorb the difference in salaries because were under the cap. I doubt that they would do it. Not sure I'd do it to be honest.

I like Kirelenko a lot. But he's 29 and unfortunately a bit injury prone.
Kirelenko's contract in enormous at almost 18 million dollars, but it would be an expiring contract for next year.

I would seriously consider this deal under the following conditions:

1.) NY Pick is top 3
2.) Our pick is 8+
3.) Our FO believes that there is no realistic shot at Chris Bosh

I would do this in a heartbeat. Not even think twice about it. Donte has not impressed me at all th second half of this season.

The more I think about it the more I would toss this out to see if the Jazz would bite. They could resign Boozer and have a nice younf piece in Donte to take Kirilenko's place.
We would have two high draft picks and would only be stuck with Kirilenko's huge contract for one year. I believe that would be better for the rebuilding process in the long run.
Any other thoughts?

Udoh isnt just a help defense shot blocker. He doesnt seem to have a problem blocking the shot of taller heavier players in the low block. I like!

I must say, if the Kings arent able to select Cousins or Favors then I really hope they select Udoh. Hes got a great nose for the ball.

I dont want Al Jefferson that badly. Hes not a defensive player. When are people going to understand that the Kings dont have a problem with scoring points. The Kings problem is and for a very long time has been stopping the other team from scoring points. How do Al jefferson and Chris Bosh help that weakness? They dont. Neither of those players help our most glaring weakness in any way.
