Not sure what Tyrekes agent thinks is going to happen, but why are they waiting to agree with someone? He isn't getting a
better offer than that
Um...yes he might now that that number is sitting there. Including going to a place where he will have an actual role more clear than "we'll work it out".

Thing is I don't think Reke wants to go. And after yesterday's debacle I'm a little restive with this front office to just close the deal so that we don't screw it up, and then work as frantically as you want on anything else you want.

It is pretty clear that Tyreke prefers to stay and he hopes we can "match" the deal he has from NO. I think he is holding off committing to Pelicans in hope that we can offer him the same deal so that we are not forced to match! Reports suggest that the offer is structured in a way that would make it difficult for us to match. I think Tyreke is giving us a genuine chance here! I just hope we don't pee it up into the wind!

Makes sense. I just wanted him to hurry and sign it, so we can match, forgetting the fact that New Orleans supposedly did some trickery with that contract offer to deter us a bit

If we give him a deal directly we can give 7.5% increases vrs 4.5 for NO so we can start it at around 9.8ish and give him the same number and his last year will be higher so his next contract can be larger vr the 10.2ish that NO starts with. Not a huge difference but it would have been useful in a race for someone to put us right at that line. We can also give a 5th year so he might be looking at either of these things.

Edit we are going to be looking at extending Cousins on Oct 31(I think thats the last day you can could be wrong) so we don't run into this same thing next year so this is really the year we will have the most cap flexibility for free agents going forward most moves will have to be sign and trades or just standard trades. Thank the last regime for putting us at the cap with some of the worst moves you could put around our Core at the time. /clap Would have preferred to just stay at the min if new management was incoming.

He gets the 7.5% raises if we match too. Our match is on on the initial numbers. Years, raises, bonus, etc are not based on the offer sheet if we match.

Tyreke met with Detroit two days ago; no word. He met with Atlanta yesterday; no word (and maybe not even any "interest"). As of today, it looks like NO is sitting out there on a limb with nobody else to follow.

We can "match" by offering Tyreke a $57,136,970 salary over 5 years. Starting at $9,836,970 on the first year, with the max raises it's $44M over 4 years, with a 5th year at $13,136,970.

Seems doable on our part? 5th year can be player or team option, up for negotiation?

The issue with the 5th year is that you can now only have 1 5-year contract on the books at any one time.

I think that most everyone assumes that the 5-year deal is going to go to Cousins when they 'hopefully' sign him to an extension.

I would be very surprised if the hold-out is due to Tyreke's camp because they want the 5th year...as they have to know that in all likelihood that is going to Cousins soon.

i thought i read somewhere that tyreke would prefer a 4yr deal....honestly right now i just think its on the kings, he clearly wants to stay...make it happen vivek/pete.

As I've mentioned earlier...I think they feel good about where they are with Tyreke Evans. He wants to play there...they are probably willing to match that 11m...so they are aggressively going after players they think will fit a Tyreke/B-Mac/Cousins core. It's probably one of those things where they don't want to get locked into that 11m if they don't have to.
Let's say that Tyreke is on board with them trying to pick someone up, provided that they keep enough space to sign him at around 11m/year.
And let's say that they pull the trigger and pick up a fantastic piece...but are then only able to offer Tyreke 10.5m a year.

It could be situations like that which were discussed with Tyreke the other night in LA. Tyreke could sign with us for the 10.5m if he wants...he isn't required to agree to NO's 11m/year and have us match.

So my guess is that the FO is comfortable with Tyreke and they are on the same page about trying to get this team the pieces needed to truly compete for the first time since Evans arrived.

But I will admit that I'll be very, very relieved when we do end up offering Tyreke something...as the anxiety isn't fun day in and day out.

As far as PG goes if he can average 5-6 assist per game he would be middle of the pack in the nba amongst pg's in assist.
Assists per game doth not a PG make.

We still need someone to handle the ball with Evans. He cannot be the only ball handler on the floor. The offense would be terrible and stagnate regardless of him averaging 5-6 apg.

Realizing this is wishful thinking, I agree. It is very possible that Tyreke can sign a contract lower than the NO offer as long as he doesn't sign the NO offer sheet. Just because NO doesn't mean he has to agree. Perhaps he doesn't want to be a 6th man or a SF.

It is possible Tyreke Evans never signs the proposed $44M offer sheet with Pelicans, sources tell Y! Sports. Still a fluid scenario.

What does in today's nba?
Think about Iverson for a bit. The guy would average like 9apg but they always had a PG paired with him to share ball handling duties IF ONLY to bring it up and take some of the pressure off of Iverson.

We had that with Evans during his rookie year. Beno was a godsend for Evans. Beno would bring it up a lot of the time giving Evans a break, or allowing Evans to move without the ball while Beno set up the offense. I just don't think Evans can't be the only competent ball handler on the floor. It wouldn't succeed if he was.

I think the biggest asset a PG can give you is being able to see the floor and make every other teammate better because he can get them easy baskets. That's my definition of a PG in today's NBA :)

Kind of like Vlade, huh?

I'm pretty sure you can only have one 5 year extension, but since that's not what this is it wouldn't prohibit the team from offering cousins a 5 year extension, which doesn't seem likely at this moment anyway.

Is Jimmer going to start with Evans?
I was being a wise-acre.

I agree with you though, and I'd love it if we could nab a decent "old dog" PG on the cheap. Our interest in Billups is intriguing.

Or hey, we can make a run at Jennings (I keed, I keed).

Best case scenario: Now that we have a decent coaching staff (assumption at this point, but Malone seems like the real deal based on his persona and resume) our young players might actually be properly developed (!!!), something that would have been unheard of in the Maloofian era. Tyreke's problems as our main ball handler, walking it up the court and pounding it for half a possession, are all fixable and should be fixed with coaching. If Reke is ever going to be a PG that can properly run a team, now is when we will start seeing strides.

In the mean time though, I'd love for us to just run him as a SG with a decent PG out there too (Calderon? Billups?).

Do you think we have to trade either Tyreke or McLemore then? I don't see McLemore fitting your ball handling criteria. Or is there some other option you picture?
I was hoping for Iggy, but I like AK to fit that role as well. Seems like Iggy is not coming though, which makes me believe that they are going to let Evans walk and sign a true PG and a shooting SF.

Interesting, don't see AK being able to bring the ball up any better than McLemore myself. I hope we get to find out though :)

We are going to have to dump McLemore or Evans to satisfy your definition. Which would you dump?
Evans (if we don't have a ball handling SF to pair with him). Maybe we could go after AK? He's pretty decent distributor. And if they don't go after Evans EVEN if they sign AK then I would go with General Greivis or Calderon.
