It'll be interesting to see how this plays out. $14 million for Igoudala is a small overpay but worth it I think if we retain Tyreke. We're unlikely to sign a better free agent and that gives us enough talent to compete with almost anyone right away along with a lot of potential to get better. Without Tyreke it doesn't make a lot of sense to me. He's a guy who can help take our young talent and put it over the top. But if it's one or the other, I'd much rather have Tyreke (even if he costs us the same $14 million) than Igoudala. Cousins/McLemore/Evans are all young guys who are likely to get better. It's questionable if Igoudala is a better player than Tyreke today, even without accounting for potential. The other problem would be that losing Evans puts a lot more pressure on Igoudala and McLemore to be go-to scorers and we already know Igoudala isn't that guy. The rap on McLemore in college is that he wasn't that guy either.
But then we haven't actually done anything negative yet. Getting Igoudala in early and throwing a figure out there if nothing else shifts us to the front of the line as the team others will have to match. If we have any interest in signing him at all, it's probably a good thing to be agressive early on like this. It sounds like we told Tyreke that our intention is still to keep him. There are ways for us to accomplish both and another week before the paperwork can be signed anyway, so it's too early to panic. It's possible the Igoudala offer never makes it to the table. Salmons has to be amnestied first of all and then we need to explore trades asap. For those that thought Thornton and JT was too much to give up for Igoudala, would you do it if it was our only shot to keep Tyreke? I'm not going to be laughing if Geoff's idiotic decision to overpay for Travis Freaking Outlaw is what stands between us and re-signing Tyreke.
