How to situate our backcourt...

Sub Isaiah for McCallum. McCallum is the same player as IT, but better BBIQ, size, and he's less selfish.
Says who? IT was a fluke 2nd rounder. You think McCallum is too, and that he could come in and put up IT numbers or better? I watch a LOT of college BBall, and I have never seen him play for a full game. How much have you actually seen of him?

On what basis? You do realize that most 2nd round picks don't even play in the NBA, right? And that IT playing as a starter after being drafted in the 2nd round is the exception, not the rule? Right? Look, if the Kings just picked a pg in the first round who they thought was the best player in the draft, I could definitely see the logic in speculating that IT would be the backup next year, or possibly be traded. But this idea that IT is gone because of a second rounder is as baseless as saying that Tyreke would be gone if they drafted a 2nd round 2- guard.
It is based on my disdain for IT's selfishness and nothing more. I know your expert opinion trumps my amateur opinion.

Wow. I don't see him as selfish, but no sense in going down that road.
Oh, please educate me. I am awaiting your undisputed and self proclaimed excellent opinions. Can you let a person have an opinion that you don't like? You are like a two year old blustering and stomping his feet when he doesn't get what he wants and I am tired of it. Oh, wow!!! A differing opinion. So shoot me.

I think Ray as a 2nd round rookie stays behind IT for most of the year with IT getting minutes behind Reke and Ben
He would be insurance PG but possible could take IT's spot by the end of the year

Then based on this year performance by both guards - next year we can keep Ray on his cheap rookie contract or Qual offer to IT and if have to pay big bucks to match could go ahead and promote Ray for next year back-up Either way back up PG would be covered for two years at a reasonable cost

Quite frankly, I'd prefer to get some value for Reke and Jimmer in a trade. Not a fan of either of their games.

I'd like to sign Jose Calderon to a short-term deal ~5m for three years. Having a true PG on the team will really allow us to "see what we have" by bringing the best out of our players and will also make the offense a heckuva lot more fun to watch. Jose is a fantastic pass-first passer and efficient scorer from 3-pt land. His defense sucks, but hey, we're not going to the playoffs anyways. Jose would be a great stopgap PG in anticipation of someone better coming along.

Plus, we've needed a true point since at least '05...I'm beyond tired of all this isolation ball and incessant dribbling...so tired that I'll take a pass-first assist monster with a dead-eye three point shot and matador defense. Even that would be an upgrade over Beno, Isaiah and the like...

5M over three years? For Calderon? More like 6-7M per year....starting. He's a quality veteran PG who will demand more than the MLE, that's for sure.

McLemore is going to be making about $2.5 million next year I believe. I don't see how his presence on the roster is going to strongly effect Tyreke Evans re-signing one way or another. If you're at all serious about re-signing him to begin with, you have to be thinking around $10-12 million per year is your target range. Anything less than that is unrealistic. If it goes up into the $13-14 million per year range, are you really going to let him go because of $8 million dollars over the life of the contract?* That's how much we just paid John Salmons for one season. And if you weren't before the draft, why would McLemore change your mind? The only thing remotely similar about them is that they're tall guards. That's pretty much it. They're not redundant talent at all. I actually think that having a guy our staff obviously targeted in Ben McLemore locked up for the next 4 years for relatively cheap might possibly help our chances of keeping Tyreke. It puts less pressure on the front office to spend more money to fill our need for a wing shooter which should put more into the pot for Tyreke and Demarcus. But again, it's $2.5 million out of a $58 million salary cap so it's a drop in the bucket either way.

More likely his presence on the roster means Marcus Thornton is going to be shopped. But we pretty much expected that to happen anyway. And we don't have to shop Thornton either, for salary purposes. We just need help at SF and PF and that's one possible way to get it.

*4 years is the max another team can sign him to under the new CBA.

Picking McLemore and McCallum means we need to trade someone, of course. First thing, I don't think that picking McCallum means IT is gone. I think he is a replacement for IT in case he demands too much at the end of next year. So I guess McCallum won't see many minutes this season, but it's going to be a learning process for him. Something like what the good teams do with their picks. They just don't throw them out there. They take the time to develop them, to see if they can play, and once they think they are ready they give them minutes. So, I'd love to see Evans and McLemore in the starting lineup, with IT as a change of pace 6th man off the bench.I believe they could fit pretty well together.

Then, we have MT, Jimmer, and also Salmons. First thing, I would amnesty Salmons, in order to make room to pursue a good FA, like Iguodala. Then, I would take the phone and call the Bucks. They just lost Monta Ellis, and there are rumors they are trying to get JR Smith. Since I doubt he will sign with them, and it really looks like they love chuckers, I would offer them Thornton for Ekpe Udoh. It gives them a replacement for Ellis, and we would get a big man who's able to block shots. Last thing, I would trade Jimmer for free, or for a 2147 2nd round pick.

I would finally add a veteran PG/SG, to be the 4th/5th guard off the bench, with very limited minutes on the court.

I personally DO think Tony Douglas will be retained and maybe at the expense of IT/Jimmer/MT in transactions down the road. I like IT/MT to but whatever we have to do to get better point blank simple as that.

For all you old-school gamers out there, I kind of like Little Mac for our new guard:

On the other hand, B-Mac is a lot easier/more natural. The key with nicknames is to never force them.

I see it the other way with MT being most likely moved (if other teams will have him or want him) and Evans/IT with McLemore coming off the bench. I am not ready to call McLemore a starter without even seeing him play a single NBA game let alone a summer league game. I know we didn't draft him to come off the bench, but let's give it a bit of time before we anoint him the starter and savior.

I thought the same thing but the kid looks like a wade/Allen hybrid.

But Gary my post was regarding Ray as the second pick behind IT on the depth chart as insurance.

But I disagree Reke - started and was ROY, Big Cuz started , As a prior mock #2 pick falling into our lap I just cant see him not starting as SG from the get go

I'm not an advocate of moving Evans (off the team) but if he is I'm intrigued by the following: PG- Thomas/McCallum, SG- McLemore/Salmons, SF- new man/new man or Outlaw.

From the group that would be gone - Evans, Thornton, Fredette , we should get enough leverage/value to acquire a starting SF and a 5th big for defensive purposes.

Whether or not my combo above has merit, I am optimistic about the future for McCallum. And let's hold off on dubbing McLemore with a nickname until we know him better - BM, Big Mac, Little Mac, mCM, just don't do it for me.

It was interestinig to hear David Aldridge Fri talk about the Kings. He was high on both draft picks, suggesting that Thomas/McCollum would share the poiint with McLamore at the 2. He then said Evans could go if he wanted to. He then mentioned that Cousins was also a question mark. Quite different from the discussion here.

I like pshn 80's post.

Well, then has listened to ZERO press conferences from the new regime, if it wasn't obvious Demarcus is staying here then I don't how more obvious it could get besides an extension.

If you have paid attention to Aldridge at all for the last few years you will know he has lost all his credibility at this point. Just another Chad Ford now talking out of his ***.

I really like DA in his role as part-time co-host of The Tony Kornheiser Show. But, yeah, aside from that, and getting trolled by Pop in sideline interviews, he's not a guy that can be counted on for much else. At least, not nationally. He's pretty strong when it comes to DC teams.
