1st off, Woj report. He's almost got it. Hansen deal isn't 65% of 525. It's 525-30 mil relo-77 city loan - 140 NBA debt.
If this is the case, then the price is $278 million.

I love all the Twitter updates that some of you post. Please keep it up!

But will one of you Twitter Dees please post what Daniels is saying today for this Twitter Dumb? Or is he conspicuously silent?

The only thing worth anything that he said was;

Chris Daniels‏@ChrisDaniels5
@roland_mitchell One could claim interference, and that is what that $30m payment is all about.

All the other stuff was pretty much just the facts that Sac had submitted the offer ect ect.. That tweet above could only come from an uninformed pos like Chris.

Proclaiming Mastrov as leading the effort to bid on the Kings was a facade for the Maloofs. It's been well documented that they cant stand Burkle and actually have a cordial relationship with Mastrov. Breaking out Mastrov as the man who wants to buy from the Maloofs and Burkle as leading the arena efforts allows the Maloofs to ease on their pre-teen grudges.
We should not worry one bit about capital being an issue here, nor should it be an issue in regards to payroll or anything of that sort. The ownership is being "led" by Mastrov, but it was mentioned how Burkle will still be contributing, just as how Mastrov will be contributing to the arena deal.

Also, Mastrov is easily worth $1.5 bil+. If he was worth $350 mil like some seattlites are saying, how on earth would he bid $420 million on the Warriors?
Funny they aren't complaining that Hansen is worth $350 million. It's Balmer and Norstrom that are the billionaires. Yet it is Hansen that is leading the way.

Daniels isn't bad at all. He's comparable to some of the sac area reporters like Dave Kasler or Steve Large. I haven't heard of anybody better from Seattle to follow.

What I hear in response to this news is that Mastrov can't afford the Kings and that in the end all that matters to BoG is Ballmer's big money.

I am not sure if this is based upon any real knowledge or if its just based upon the general cynicism that exists towards the NBA's goodwill.

From what I have heard and read from a bunch of different sources, it doesn't matter how much money the Seattle group has, because it's not an auction. People (especially in Seattle) just don't understand that. As Stern has said, it's not a question of economics. The question is whether the BoG is willing to approve the sale of the team to a group that's going to move the team to Seattle in spite of the fact that there is now a local group willing to buy the team and keep it here.

It's not as simple as "well, Ballmer and Hansen have more money, so they win." It's way more complicated than that, luckily. :)

It's also not as simple as saying "but they already paid $30M to guarantee everything." There are lots of ways of handling that, including the Mastrov group paying the Hansen group back for that. It's kind of debatable in my mind whether that mattered anyway, since it wasn't the Maloofs or the Hansen group that was going to decide whether the team could relocate.

The other one that people seem to focus on is that the Seattle group has submitted an offer to the Maloofs that has been signed. That fact also doesn't mean much...if the BoG says "wait a minute," then things will change.

Burkle, unlike George Maloof, is an actual developer

Here's a look at his first venture into arena-building in Pittsburgh.

Thank you for saying this. I'm not sure what the hang up is on Mastrov leading the way. He's the one with the deep passion for basketball and the desire to be out in public. Burkle would rather be in the background. I'm fine with that. The combined net worth doesn't change, no matter what role is played. If it has been decided that Mastrov is the face, then he is our guy. We have the security of knowing that Burkle is in the background supporting it all. Who cares whose name is listed first.

A very big plus and potential part that seals the deal. Burkle has built an arena already. Nobody in Seattle can say that.

Scott Howard cooper and the nbatv analysts talking about the offer and talking about how it's unlikely BOG denies Hansen/balmer despite the Sacramento efforts. Typical big media stuff but it would be nice to start seeing people outside sac having some confidence.

I might be completely blinded by my own bias. However, it is hard for me to imagine that the NBA would approve basically dissolving the Kings (by renaming them the sonics) with all the years that the Kings have been in the league, and in the same motion take a team away from a city that has been a model for other small markets when the city has a viable new owner and ability to build a new arena.

It just does not make any sense and would be a really dumb move on the part of the NBA.

Is Seattle really that special?

The perspective of Seattle fans us that the NBA unfairly screwed them so they are confident that the NBA will unfairly screw Sacramento both to "right a wrong" and to get the team into a bigger market with a huge pocketed owner.

I understand their view, bolstered by the fact that the Maloofs reached a deal with the Hansen/Ballmer group first.

But leaving a small market with huge fan support and (more importantly) a plan for a new arena with significant public dollars would not be in keeping with the BOG's past decisions AND would set a horrible precedent.

If big money ownership trumped all Ellison would own the Warriors. And if deals struck by outgoing owners is all that mattered the T'Wolves would have relocated. I honestly think the odds are very much in Sacramentos favor if they can get the arena deal worked out to the BOG's satisfaction.

Yeah I agree with this. Stern went out of his way at the All-Star game press conference to point out how different the situation was when the Sonics left. He was dealing with a local government that wanted no part of helping the NBA. The situation in Sacramento is the exact opposite. The owners negotiated in secret to sell the team to a Seattle ownership group after previously refusing to sell to Burkle and publicly commenting the whole time that the team was not for sale. Meanwhile Kevin Johnson has been working with the NBA on this arena issue for years now. He has an ownership group with a comparable offer, he has the money for a new arena deal and development partners who can make it happen. He even went out of his way to line up corporate sponsorship for the next 5 seasons. I'm not going to go so far as to call it a done deal, but anybody comparing this situation to what happened in Seattle 4 1/2 years ago is either uninformed or inherently biased.

Excited to see the announcement finally happened :D

I love that they mentioned adding a WNBA franchise as well, while it made me laugh a little, and even seems inconsequential on the surface, it does play into the larger NBA business model. More than just wanting to have an NBA franchise, it shows their intention of being part of the NBA corporation. Big picture visions.

What these National analysts are failing to recognize is that relocation is solely for franchises that have lost fan support and/or don't have a facility up to current NBA standards and can't get one built. After yesterday's news, both points above are no longer applicable in regards to the Sacramento Kings.

The team will have a state-of-the-art facility built and they have proven and consistent fan support. Sure, attendance has dropped in recent years, but everybody knows that it is due to the fans dislike of the current owners and the fact that, up until dynamic pricing a few seasons ago, tickets were grossly over priced for a cellar dweller team that was far removed from their glory days a decade ago.

How many times has a professional sports team, in any of the 4 major sports leagues, been relocated despite having a word class facility (or the guarantee that one will be built) and overwhelming fan/city support?

In each example I can think of, one of those two factors was missing.

So, again, why would the NBA allow a franchise to move when they have both? Wouldn't that set a precedent that's never happened?

This website has the worst sarcasm detector and sense of humor I have ever seen. It was a joke.
I can pretty much guarantee that the Monarchs fans who went through this ordeal and had their hearts ripped out when their team was demolished don't find it at all funny. Just sayin'...

After more reports filtered out it IS Mastrov/Burkle team bid with Mastrov as the face of the ownership group! This makes perfect sense with Burkle being the low key type guy and Mastrov having already gone through the process with his bid for GSW and his "cordial" relationship with Maloofs! It also makes perfect sense that Burkle is leading the arena effort given his experience in getting it done in Pittsburgh but the key thing here is that it is a Mastrov/Burkle group that is biddibg for the team with Mastrov as the frontman just as Hansen is the frontman of the Seattle group!

That does not even go into the fact that we now have an ownership group that has the money to run the team properly and sign players to get beeter. Once this sale becomes official, first call is sacking the coach and the front office!

I am somewhat sad that Adelman is under contract with Minnesota because in my opinion he would be absolutely perfect for this team!

Article in today's Bee:

The battle for the Sacramento Kings was formally joined early Friday. Mark Mastrov and Ron Burkle submitted to NBA headquarters their proposal to buy the Kings and keep the team from moving to Seattle. In the weeks to come, they will join Mayor Kevin Johnson in presenting the league with a companion proposal to build a new arena at the site of ailing Downtown Plaza.

Still, it's far from certain that Mastrov and Burkle can pry the team from Seattle investors Chris Hansen and Steve Ballmer, who have even deeper pockets and a deal in place to purchase the Kings from the Maloof family.

I think the demise of the franchise can be pinpointed as having started with the firing of Adelman. Not Webber's knee. Not the Webber trade. Not the Artest trade. No other single catalyst like when Geoff sold his soul and fired Rick Adelman. If we could get him back, we'd be in the playoffs. Hell the Maloofs might still be making money with a successful NBA franchise if they had not demanded that the non-kissass Rick Adelman be fired so they could hire a pretty boy brown noser instead. I always loved Adelman and have always thought it was major stupid to let him go... and who knows, maybe the new ownership can figure out a way to bring him back - maybe even as President of Basketball Operations or something (maybe he was the real brains behind the franchise back then for all we know... and Geoff is just a scarecrow). It always drove me crazy to hear the soccer mom/dad radio caller know it all monday morning quarterbacks dissing Rick's rotations and strategies after a loss.
Anyway, I'm sad too. He is the perfect coach for the team. Always was.

I'm not sure I would link the demise of the franchise with Adelman, although no argument that from that point on the fortunes changed. I would think the demise had more to do with the tightening of the purse strings. And I think the tightening of the purse strings had more to do with the changes in the gambling market than any thing that was happening on the court. In the glory days, the was good synergy between what was happening on the court and what was happening in their Casino. As more options arose for gambling including the Casinos on the reservations, the synergy between the two was minimized.

I'm going to go with the Adelman angle. I have never trusted the Maloofs nor have I ever thought they were good owners, even during the glory years. My reasoning was simple. Just about every transaction made that led to the 8 year playoff run was made before they became owners. They didn't officially get voted in as owners until the lockout was lifted. However, many important moves were made before that...

Peja was drafted in 1996 but stayed in Greece to fulfill his contractual obligations.

White Chocolate was drafted in '98, just a week before the lockout started.

CWebb was obtained in a trade with Washington either a couple days before or after the draft but still before the lockout started.

Rick Adelman was hired during the lockout since non player transactions were allowed.

Those transactions set the stage for Vlade coming aboard as a free agent. OK, I'll give the Maloofs credit on Vlade but they had tons of cap space and had to spend it somewhere. And let's not forget that it was Petrie who felt Vlade would be a good match. The Maloofs probably didn't even know he existed.

Adelman oversaw 8 straight playoff participations. He gets fired and they haven't been to the playoffs since. Not only that but every single hire was lousy. Musselman, Reggie, Natt, Westphal and Smart were all on the Maloofs' watch and not surprisingly, none of them have taken the Kings to the playoffs.
