Sam Amick (link) and others reporting that Hickson has been bought out by the Kings.

Too bad we couldn't manage to trade him for a pick at the deadline...

Smart move. Now we don't have to pay his medical insurance nor bear the liability of his slipping on the service porch rug and breaking his kneecap.

I don't get it. What is the point of letting him go now, and paying for him to leave? Major cake on Petrie's face
He may still be injured and we want to try out other players as we already know what we will get from him.

I don't think anyone thought this was a bad deal on this forum.

Looked like a good move at the time sometimes things just don't work out. I doubt our draft pick will be in jeopardy for a few years.

No way around it, that was a bad trade.

Wonder what the heck made him so bad all the sudden that it was better to not have him around the team? That we couldn't even trade him for a pick? For any kind of project player??

Was this guy not basically the #2 behind Lebron for half a season??

This was just crazy. Really wonder if there were other issues going on. Did he sleep with somebody's lady? Into drugs? Maybe something of that nature now that Smart is really emphasizing the family approach.

Gotta wonder if he even has a future in the league.

I'm kinda surprised at the response here. It's not like the writing for this move hasn't been on the wall since...early January. I mean, hey, it would have been nice to have gotten something back for him in a deadline deal, but we have known this trade was a disaster (because of the draft pick, not Casspi) for months.

Yeah, I have to agree. Hickson for Casspi straight up would have been fine. Casspi isn't exactly tearing up the league either. Its the 1st round pick thats the rub. We probably would have traded him for another 1st round pick if we could have. Shows how his value dropped. Someone will pick him up though. If not for the remainder of this season, then for next season.

Also mistake not to extend JT
Hard to say without knowing all the inside info. Could be they've had conversations with his agent, decided he was asking for too much, and then decided to see what his value on the market is. I like JT, and think he's an important part of the team, so I hope they get something done at some point. My fear is that the Kings are a team with the tail wagging the dog right now. I feel like they're on the verge of putting together something great, or creating a giant disaster.

Well, he wasn't very good, but why they couldn't just wait till seasons end and let him walk is curious, unless they have need of a roster spot.
I agree. Only bonus is it frees the cap hold. But lose the ability to do a sign and trade and get something back for teams over the cap.

Maybe someone needs him now and this is some kind of backroom waiver wire deal like you see in MLB? Grasping at straws I know. But makes no sense unless he was a locker room cancer.

I guess you cut your losses where you can. Too bad Hickson didn't work out... I blame no one for this other than JJ Hickson himself. He had a golden opportunity and blew it and managed to screw the Kings in the process.

Hickson's stock was much higher that time. In fact, earlier, Cavs had refused to include him in a trade for Amare. If I recall correctly, his arrival was almost universally welcomed by the fans here.

As for the pick, this year, it's safe. Subsequent years, not so much. This is what I got from the Cavs website (don't blame me. Google threw it up first).

will get a first-round pick in addition, although the pick is lottery-protected in 2012. The pick is then protected in 2013 (1-13), 2014 (1-12) and 2015-2017 (1-10). If the pick is not conveyed by 2017, then Sacramento will convey its 2017 second-round draft pick to the Cavaliers protected (56-60.)

The only other thing I can think of is that we did him a favor, and his agent shall remember it (and repay) in future. Also, if he was bought out, it's possible the owners saved some money.

if someone were to pick him up, the Kings would only have to come up with the difference between his original deal and the new deal, correct?

#26
Yeah, this makes the lack of a deal by the deadline look that much worse. Not even a second round pick for the guy. So all we get out of our 2015 (we should make the playoffs by then) first round pick is a hole where Casspi used to be.

This is usually what goes on in these things. We aren't going to use him, and he wants to be free to go sign with somebody. And he probably will too. Would not be surprised either way with his future career. Could easily see him ending up in the rotation for somebody down the line in a different situation. We were just a bad fit from the start. Hard to go from a guy who averaged 16.8pts 10.8rebs after the All Star break last season to a guy who gets just flat out released after the All Star break the next.

Look up the term "sunk cost" and you'll figure out why it was time to get rid of this guy. He was terrible.
