Tropical Island Music Artist Draft - FINIS

There aren't many cover songs I like more than the original (3 that I can think of). I kind of have a hard time deciding which one I like more because I actually heard Cash's version first. But in a toss-up I go with the original.

Wasn't even sure whether I had one of their albums without checking. Turns out that I have Let's Get Out Of This Country, and, looking at the cover, I remember that my roommate gave that record to me a long time ago. Haven't listened to it for ages, but seeing as how it came from him, there's a solid chance it's really good music.

Good pick with Pantera. I'd been considering them for awhile. I don't care much for the aggressive, abrasive style of their later work, though. Basically I like Power Metal, Cowboys From Hell, and about half of Vulgar Display of Power. The Abbott brothers were a great musical team and Anselmo was a great singer...back when he used to actually sing.

I am gonna jump on this hot "obscure" band trend for my next two picks. First, the band with the lead singer who must be an angel. Her voice is one of the most beautiful I have ever heard. Reminds me of Karen Carpenter, but an octave up. They hail from the amish-heavy town of Lancaster Pennsylvania:

the innocence mission

Beautiful folk music... I don't know how else to describe them; I got a bootleg of one of their concerts on tape when they played San Juan Capistrano and have been a life long fan since then.

Here is their sort of hit song:

How a birthday song should sound:

Watch this one... you will see what I mean:

For my next obscure pick, I will take my favorite Japanese-American female rap/trip-hop duo:

Cibo Matto

I first heard of this band when their weird song "Know your Chicken" came out... They seemed funny and werid enough for me... but then I heard the song "Sugar Water" and I was forever hooked. Their rap songs are dated now, but funny, but their ambient/trip-hop and pop songs sound better every time I hear them.

The song that hooked me

A live song:

the chicken song that started it all... NSFW (a little language... if you can understand it)

Oh, and P.S. last time I was in Lancaster PA as part of a team on a high profile case we hid out in a hotel on the edge of town under assumed names because of the death threats we were getting. Charming little burg.

Wow, never thought they would get picked. Love Viva La Woman, though. It's a whole album of Japanese girls singing about food in broken English. I like to think that due to peculiarity in some textbook their knowledge of English vocabulary was limited to food items, but I'm sure that's not the case. Cred for the pick, though!

I probably wouldn't have ended up taking them, just because so many of the bands/artists I would have been going after are still available, but Cibo Matto is one of two obscure Japanese groups I would have considered. Nice pick.

Also, add me to the list of finallys on the Nine Inch Nails pick. I thought for certain they/he would be taken in the early rounds.

I'll stay out of the Cash v. Reznor "Hurt" debate, since I love both versions for completely reasons and think it's almost silly to compare them.

My next pick is again another overlooked band. I am both surprised and glad that they are still available at this point in the draft. I have never seen a collection of players in a single band where each one is technically up there with the best in playing their instrument.

BAM!

[PROG NERD ALERT]
I was wondering when they would go. Great catalogue, great music. You should know that you also inherit covers of Master of Puppets, Dark Side of the Moon, and Number of the Beast in their entirety.

A little self-promotion, here's a video I took of them in a concert I saw a few months ago when I went to visit the fam in SF:

Hands down the best progressive band out there. Those of you who haven't heard much of them are really missing out. Their latest album is actually one of the best they've done in a long time. They were a band I was referencing a few rounds ago.

Nice pick! They were going to be my last pick of the draft. FYI they do a pretty decent cover of Master of Puppets too.

edit: haha I see Spike already covered that :p

I don't care for the classification "nu-metal", but alas they are my favorite of this faux genre:

KoЯn

They're one of those bands that I didn't even realize that I liked so many of their songs. Blind is right up there with Hell's Bells for best intro to a song ever (and that's not debatable :p).

In spoilers once again

Bagpipes & nursery rhymes in a metal song? KoЯn ftw

Nice pick. Another band that has been overlooked. I like Korn, though i'm not that big of a fan. Their performance of "One" on MTV Icons Metallica was epic.

Another great band that I've been eyeing for awhile now. Glad someone picked them.

For my money there's a few prog metal/rock acts I think are better than Dream Theater, one of them being my last pick, Symphony X. I like Dream Theater but I think too often they tend to use their immense skills to create technically impressive music but not necessarily emotionally resonant music. At least that's how their music translates to me. Some prog bands I can listen to all day but DT i can only listen to for maybe a few songs before they start to become tedious. I'm also sometimes turned off by their obvious channeling of other prog bands, be it Rush, Tool, Pink Floyd, Metallica, or whoever. It's one thing to show your influences but another to sound like you're literally blueprinting parts of your songs off of other bands styles.

If you liked Viva La Woman, you should check out their second effort "Stereotype A"; it a cleaner, better produced album and the songwriting is better.

OK. I've been dithering about looking into it for years but it always seems to get worse reviews so I've just been waiting for an opportunity to borrow it (which of course, is unlikely to happen because they're not well known). I'll move it up towards the top of my "buy this when you feel rich" list!
