Tropical Island Music Artist Draft - FINIS

Crap... in the middle of typing a response and the windows update restart prompt comes up and apparently I typed 'y' or something. My whole machine rebooted.

Anyway... what I was going to say is that this is an obvious pick. For whatever reason I just never sought out his music, he was always on the "I've gotta go listen to some of that" list. If I had I'm sure I'd have taken him by now. Good pick.

Alicia Keys

She's already been around for about a decade, and her voice is easily one of the best ever IMO. Also, an amazing artist on the piano as well. Easily one of my top 5 female solo artists ever.

And you call yourself a hip-hop fan, tut-tut! :p

Seriously, Tupac gets a bad rap (no pun intended) sometimes due to a combination of factors; his unpredictability, mainstream popularity, criminality among other things. But if you look past that and listen to his music you won't be disappointed. He was an artist in the truest since of the word. Covered almost every topic imaginable, big work ethic, absolutely massive catalogue of songs for a guy that died at 25, etc.. I'm yet to hear anyone rap with so much emotion, experience and pain.

Me against the World isn't my favourite album of his. All Eyez On Me might be my favourite, but all of his albums have some gems on them.

This isn't even my pick. Better stop selling it!

I definitely like Alicia Keys, but she just didn't have a large enough catalog for me to really look there. (Lauryn Hill is one of my all-time favorite artists so I had to overlook the same deficiency already once for her.)

So far, Tesla is the only Sacramento band to have made the draft list. Now, it's about time to snatch probably the biggest Sacramento band ever - Cake.

I think I can probably name one band that I've deliberately gone to see at a show before they became a major national act, and that's Cake. Unfortunately, I never bought the rock and roll t-shirt to prove I was there, that I heard of them first. (Well, that's how I afford my rock and roll lifestyle!) Cake is just a heck of a lot of fun, and one of the few modern bands that can just say, "the heck with it, we're going to put a trumpet line into every single song" and totally get away with it. Their sound hasn't changed much in 20 years, which is maybe a bit of a knock on them, but at the same time I give them credit for sticking to what works for them.

Years active: 1991-present
Catalog: 6 studio albums and one "rarities" album (4h54m)
Landmark songs: Rock and Roll Lifestyle, The Distance, I Will Survive, Never There, Short Skirt/Long Jacket
Song I keep coming back to:

Very cool band... played a benefit show in Oroville a couple years back for the Berry Creek or Concow Volunteer Fire Dept; local heroes, them boys.

Well, I'm no hip hop fan, but I'd still maintain that, except for one, none of the hip hop acts already drafted belong in the top five of that genre.
I know a few that you are talking about. But we're not necessarily drafting the "best" artists here, just personal taste.

That, and for me I'm looking to assemble a collection of music. So I might not even pick favorites if they are duplicative or don't bring enough actual music.

Really? He's AC and so not in my normal music path, but he's huge AC, like one of the biggest selling artists of the last decade type big. You've probably heard him at some point and just not known who it was. Voice to make women swoon and all that.
Uh... to make some women swoon. I'm sure a lot of it has to do with how little of the adult contemporary genre I can stomach in general, but I just don't get the Groban thing. Impressive voice, technically, but with all the flavor of white bread soaked in water.

Another childhood favorite of mine ;)

The Monkees

Words cannot express how awesome I find both of these picks. Don't know if The Monkees would have made my top 20, but I'm damn happy to see them picked. And Cake almost certainly would have been in my top five.

Don't Make Me Use The Bat
Okay, well I hope I don't end up losing somebody else because of this and regretting it, but with so many smaller bands popping up, I have grown concerned for these guys and am going to bump them up here to make sure they are mine. All mine! MUHAHAHAHAHA!!! Oh...er....sorry. Um...anyway...

Flogging Molly

Drunken irish bar bands for the win! :p These guys are just fun fun fun and include some of my favorite things in rock type bands, including lots of band members and non-standard instruments (this 7 man crew includes a fiddle player and an accordion). I got my pop punk, my cow punk, a splash of new wave, and now some celtic punk just in case a case of beer ever washes up on shore.

P.S. Ironically while the lead singer is actually irish (born and raised in Dublin), the band actually hails from the L.A. punk scene.

Irish lead singer was also the singer of 80s metal band Fastway in which his heavy Irish accent was non-existent. I always found that super amusing.

Bricky, you've missed out on the most famous (and best) Irish drunken bar band of all time. I won't mention their name incase anyone has them in mind, although I'm not sure if anyones even heard of them in the US. (Hint: It's not the Pogues).

I suspect I know who you are talking about, but I think of them more as the band to close things out at 2:00am at the end of a long night of drinking, while Flogging Molly is more the raging band from earlier in the evening at the heart of the party that got you hammered in the first place. :p

Of course then again, I might be thinking of the wrong band entirely, so who knows.

Just going by record sales, Telsa would be Sac's biggest band. Tesla sold over ten million albums all together. Cake's total sales are probably closer to five million.

Perhaps it's blasphemous to make this musical leap from Jim Croce to my next choice, but I need to add a taste of metal with my grunge and classic rock heavy list. With my 9th round pick I select:

Tool

Dark bass lines, fierce guitar riffs, haunting vocals, and ethereal lyrics. Tool was the band that was popular before I was old enough to truly appreciate them, but they still hold a soft spot in my heart, and on my island.
