Tropical Island Music Artist Draft - FINIS

If you guys like hip hop so much, then get to pickin' and help me thin out my list! :D

I mean, the best hip hop artists of all time are just sitting there waiting for people to pick them.

And as for Black Eyed Peas, I honestly wouldn't have picked them at that spot if I had been in town, although I probably would have gotten them eventually if nobody else did. In fact, the next two artists on the first list of four that I sent to Warhawk haven't been picked by me or anybody else either. I changed my thinking quite a bit once the draft started.

Just a heads up guys/gals, but after Jespher pokes his head up and makes his selection I am going to be taking advantage of Rule 8(a) (Rule 8(a) -- at his discretion the island commissioner may at any time take his next three picks in a row) which should make me feel better about not risking losing a major act if I take a sleeper instead.

With my 8th round choice, I select:

Jim Croce

He'll form a nice bridge between Paul Simon and Frank Sinatra, and his mellow, down home sound will bring me back to my childhood memories of my dad (who is really the spitting image of Jim Croce himself) and I playing these easy going tunes on rustic steel string guitars in the wilderness. Gone too soon IMHO, it would be amazing to see some of the music he would have produced with a long, full life!

Great pick! i love Jim Croce. Nice to see him get some love. He was one of the best singer/songwriters of the 70s. His ballads were awesome. I was thinking about him as a late pick.

After bowing out of the classic rock wars early rather than reaching for 2nd tier bands who were not all time favs, I thought I would wait it out and see who was left after the smoke cleared. When I suddenly realized these guys were still out there I had to do about a triple check just to make sure of my good luck:

Boston

This pick might have been worth it just for More Than a Feeling and Peace of Mind alone (two of my favorite songs from the entire classic rock era), but these guys had a tremendous first couple of albums before letting legal battles just zero out their career as they refused to make music through much of their prime. Still, like a band like Cream or CCR, the quality of the stuff they did put out was so high that its still played all the time nearly 40 years later.

Consider this redemption for the CCR pick. Foreplay/long time isn't worth a mention?

There have been a few calls for Hanson to be taken...and I'm not exactly going there. Swap the "o" out for an "e" and you get Hansen - Beck Hansen, that is, best known only as Beck.

Beck came onto the scene hard in 1994 with "Loser" and I dismissed him as a one-hit wonder. Yep, that was a mistake. Even now, I'm not quite sure how to classify him - on the spot, AlternaElectronoKitsch is the best I can come up. At least two things are certain - he tends to write inscrutable but eminently compelling lyrics, and he's one heck of a creative musician.

Years active: 1988-present
Catalog: 11 studio albums (10h34m), 4 EPs/Remix albums (about 2h)
Landmark songs: Loser, Where It's At, Devil's Haircut, Lost Cause, E-Pro
Song I keep coming back to:

So, a few different ways to go here. I'm deciding to go in a bit of a different direction. I'm honestly not too afraid of losing her at this point but I was reminded today that my island simply can't do without her.

Therefore my next pick is the first solo female act on my island and one of the all time great voices IMO.

Mariah Carey

Another one of those childhood favorites of mine :) I can still listen to this one over and over!

The Mamas and the Papas

You've got one of those really consistent lists on here where I feel like after only 8 picks I know your core musical tastes well enough that I could buy you a CD for Christmas with a good chance it being somebody you'd like.

Glad to see someone pick Mariah. I love Mariah. She has a few songs I love and she really does have one of the best voices ever.

Ok, I'm doing it. I choose Tesla. Sacramento's hometown heroes. I can't resist. I'm sorry to whoever it is that throws me that elusive #1 vote every draft.

What's to say? They had a great twin guitar attack. Quality vocals. Good hooks. Unfairly miscategorized as a hair band after tours with the likes of bands I guess I will not name, just in case. Were they the best band of their genre? Hardly. But for those of us in Sacramento in the late 80s early 90s they were OUR band. And they worked hard at it too, always shouting out to Sacramento, shooting videos there (I'm fairly certain I am in like 3 frames during the guitar solo for the "Love Song" video). I'd see them all around town at the strangest places. Model airplane shops. Softball games. Kings games when the team was strictly a blue collar affair.

For me this was particularly meaningful as I spent my freshman year of HS in 88-89 in New Hampshire and just wasn't enjoying it, not making friends and generally pretty miserable until winter had just about wrapped up. I was on the wrestling team and pretty much would just go from school to school to get my butt kicked every single week. And I remember going down to the record store and Great Radio Controversy had come out during this time and just jamming out on those long bus rides. I guess "Hang Tough" was my personal soundtrack on those rides.

Its a bit more dated than some other hard rock/metal I was listening to then, and kind of cheesy looking back at it now but I've also found quite a few folks not from Sacramento also really loved this band. And its almost impossible for me now when I hear them on the radio (admittedly not often) to just crank it and sing along full throat.

But perhaps their great contribution was their Five Man Acoustical Jam which pretty much gave birth to the Unplugged Concert Series, at least as far as it pertained to heavy rock acts. They slowed down their originals and had a memorable cover of "Signs" among quite a few others.

Oh, and the last time I heard from them they were at the Save Our Kings rally.
good pick. I like Tesla, though they're not on my list.

With this pick I draft, Alice in Chains.

Probably my favorite band of the last 20 years. Cantrell/Staley were a great songwriting duo, one of the best ever. Staley’s powerful voice, Cantrell’s riffs, the killer hooks, the gloomy atmosphere, the sweet vocal harmonies, the dark lyrics. Awesome stuff.

Their catalog isn't that big, three albums and two Eps but it's extremely consistent and full of awesome songs.
I love Alice in Chains, great pick. My favorite song of theirs is Rooster.

No Internet until tomorrow so will do writeup then. Next up is

Bon Jovi

Bon Jovi has always been a guilty pleasure of mine. Here's the main reason why:

on my way out the door, but i double checked. I couldn't believe that this woman had not been taken. ARETHA aretha (2).jpg

Aretha Franklin is one of the giants of soul music, and indeed of American pop as a whole. More than any other performer, she epitomized soul at its most gospel-charged. Her astonishing run of late-'60s hits with Atlantic Records -- "Respect," "I Never Loved a Man," "Chain of Fools," "Baby I Love You," "I Say a Little Prayer," "Think," "The House That Jack Built," and several others -- earned her the title "Lady Soul," which she has worn uncontested ever since. Yet as much of an international institution as she's become, much of her work -- outside of her recordings for Atlantic in the late '60s and early '70s -- is erratic and only fitfully inspired, making discretion a necessity when collecting her records. http://www.allmusic.com/artist/aretha-franklin-p4305

With Brick's pick, i was worried that he would start another frenzy of classic rock selections and my next pick will be in danger of not being included on my island. So, with a huge sigh of relief, I select the once holder of the Guinness record for the loudest band:

My favorite song from them

And perhaps the most recognizable classic rock riff ever

I was wondering when Deep Purple would go. Overall they were a little too uneven to make my list, but still a good pick.

I don't really like Deep Purple but I effin' love Highway Star. I remember waking up to that almost every morning on 93 rock. I wouldn't get up until I heard the sweet sounds of that guitar solo. Good times.

That's kind of how I am. If they had more stuff as awesome as Highway Star, they'd be one of my favorite bands. I'm familiar with most of their albums though and they very rarely ever achieved that same level of greatness on any of their other tunes. "Child in Time" is one of their other great ones, it's kind of their Stairway to Heaven. Overall though they just had too many forgettable songs and inconsistent albums to rank very high on my list of favorites.

Another reason I love these guys so much is their diversity. Not many bands could go from the delicate, haunting beauty of this...

To the crushing heaviness of this and do both greatly...

With this pick, I say about f*****g time. I'm out.

A unique song writer. He had a dark sarcastic sense of humor that I love.

All of this discussion of computer guided pitch-correction makes me think about the real outstanding vocal talents throughout the years; there is one voice that I can only describe as like a hot knife through butter... the purest, most beautiful female voice I have ever heard... guilty pleasure? Maybe, but I love this band:

The Carpenters

This is the one band that could perform a song better than anyone else... people don't even bother trying to cover the songs they sang, because they just cannot pull it off. No computer assistance here... just a vocal marvel... plus, she played the drums!!! Vocalists of today are lucky if they remember all the words.
