Tropical Island Music Artist Draft - FINIS

While I was a tad afraid they wouldn't fall to me during the classic rock craze earlier in this draft, I'm really glad they did :)

The Eagles

One thing that I've yet to reveal in this draft, is that I'm also a big country music fan, and I love this band because they do have quite the country feel sometimes :)

I'll always treasure Desperado, Already Gone and of course Hotel California. But that's just scratching the surface of a long and storied catalog.
Good pick. I didn't quite have them on my list but i do really like quite a few of their songs. Their albums weren't that consistent in my opinion though so I shied away from them for that reason. I still would have considered them as a late pick if they were still around though.

I got into an argument with a professor on a college visit to UofP back in the day who used Counting Crows as an example of modern achievement in rock. (It really was a terrible presentation - CC was just the icing on the cake.) Needless to say, I did not end up at UofP. That's too bad, too. I'm sure the Kandiman and I would have had a good ole time in Stockton. So because of that, I say bleah to the Counting Crows. Bleah.

Don't take it the wrong way; it's entirely personal, Jespher.
Heh. Missed this post the first time around. The ol' Kandiman was one of our tenants and one of my mom's students when he was at UOP. Charming guy, but... no further comment on the good times he was having in Stockton.

Did you NOT read rule 5a)???

Rule 5a) it shall be illegal to take, or to seriously consider taking, an artist off of the Island Commissioner's list

continued activity in this vein will force me to activate Rule 5b):

Rule 5b) the Commissioner shall have the power, in his sole discretion, to delete illegal picks under Rule 5a) and move them onto his own list where they belong

OK, so I have to be honest here. When I was making my pre-draft list, I totally forgot about these guys! I'm sooo glad they are still here for me to pick up in Round 6. I'm probably reaching a bit, but this is just one of those uber-personal picks you know you HAVE to make because your island would be empty if you didn't.

Snow Patrol

I loved these guys since I first heard "Spitting Games" on a MLB game back in like 2004 before they became mainstream with "Chasing Cars."

IMO, they've gotten better with each song and album.

Damn you!!! I'd actually forgotten about them somehow, but I probably wouldn't have taken them yet anyway as I would have gambled on them being available in a few rounds. Didn't think they were well known in the US. Great band, many great songs. Very nice pick.

Jeez a lot of my late round picks are going much earlier than I anticipated. This could get difficult. And I was wondering when the Eagles would go. I loved Hotel California and liked a few more, but I wasn't a big enough fan to warrant picking them.

Well now this draft has me totally confused. I have no idea if these guys would make it to Round 11 or 12 or if they'd be the next pick. Luckily I don't care, because I'm taking them.

Rage Against the Machine

Quality over quantity here, since they only released 4 albums. But they have long been a favorite of mine. And I finally get Killing in the Name on an island after missing out on it in the 2 iPod drafts a few years back.

Even though I've seen at least one video in this thread containing profanity, I'm gonna put these videos in spoilers for now. A mod can delete them if need be

Great pick! I don't know why, but they just totally slipped out of my mind.

Huh. I really liked Final Straw (which turns out not to be their first record, who knew?), but haven't actually cared a lot for them since. Probably just my hipster side taking over, though.

Good pick!

I still need some surf music on my island, and since someone rudely took my Beach Boys, I'll take Jan & Dean and be just as content.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jan_and_Dean
"Jan and Dean's place in rock historyIn 1964 Jan and Dean were signed to host what became the first multi-act Rock and Roll show that was edited into a motion picture designed for wide distribution. The T.A.M.I. Show became a seminal and original production - in essence one of the first rock videos - on its release in 1964. Using high quality film (good enough to be transferred from television kinescope directly onto 35mm motion picture stock), new sound recording techniques and having a remarkable cast, the T.A.M.I. Show set the standard for all succeeding music film and video work, including many of the early videos shown by Music Television 17 years later. The revolutionary technical achievements of The T.A.M.I. Show and the legendary list of performers (including a performance by James Brown that many critics have called the best of his career) marked a high point for Jan and Dean, as they were the hosts and one of the main featured acts as well. They became one of the main faces of mid-1960s music until Berry's auto accident two years later through their T.A.M.I. Show appearance.

According to rock critic Dave Marsh, the attitude and public persona of punk rock can be traced to Jan and Dean.[15] Certainly their early hits, recorded with myriad overdubs in a garage, and their casual and goofy stage antics were consistent with some of punk rock's ethos. But their constant improvement and the increased complexity of their arrangements in the latter recordings showed their fealty to Brian Wilson's baroque approach. Many of their records feature the top session players of the era, and their arrangements, with multiple key changes and complex vocal harmonies, reflected a high level of craftsmanship."

Cool, cool pick.

I was planning to take this band somewhere in the middle rounds but the way the draft is going right now(picks getting stolen), I didn't want to risk my current favorite heavy metal band being taken away from me and my island. So without further ado, I select:

Let me do my prior picks justice:

They Might Be Giants

The dynamic duo of weird, quirky music. I really enjoy their early stuff, but it is all good from Ana Ng to Birdhouse in your Soul to Particle Man to Don't Let Start... just a great, great group. Their nerdy coolness cannot be denied.

My other prior pick:

Cat Stevens

Cat Stevens is the best of 70's singer/songwriter trend in my opinion... such a great voice; such incredible songs... I own all of the albums on CD (but, oddly, only his greatest hits on LP, go figure). Love Cat Stevens.

Elliott Smith

Never heard of him until I moved to Oregon where, especially in the Portland area, he has a huge following. Amazing song writer who lived what he wrote about. Sadly his demons got the best of him and he took his own life in 2003.

I select:

Cheap Trick

I am trying to sum up this pick, but I am having trouble finding how exactly to explain this pick... let's see: how about: FIVE NECKED GUITAR! and great songs like Surrender, I Want You to Want Me, Dream Police, and on and on. I think that sums it up.

My next pick:

R.E.M.

R.E.M. in the 80's was the ultimate in alternative rock music... no one could touch them... then, in the 90's they exploded. They have put out albums that span genre after genre... to me, they are like the U.S. version of the Clash...

A love them or hate them band.

Another one that I figured to grab in the later rounds. Losing my Religion is my favorite by them but they have some other great ones. I do find that they kind of get "worn out" a little bit for me though. I grow tired of listening to them so I stop for a while n then start again.

Huh. Did not see Cheap Trick going this early. I enjoy their music - I think "fun" is the best way to describe it.

Oh, and a little more RATM (OK, Afrika Bambaataa):

Battle for Los Angeles is my favorite album, with their self titled a veeery close second.

I honestly can't choose which album I like better. I usually go back and forth between those 2 but Evil Empire is pretty good in its own right. I like Renegades a little more than that as well though

His solo career would be the consolation prize for not getting Cream in my book. Cream is the best thing Clapton was ever involved with by a long shot. I find his ensuing solo career a little dull, actually.
Agreed though I suspect that he has performed all the hits live on some album somewhere so the picker will claim some inferior version of them.
