So Ordinary That It's Truly Quite Extraordinary

I'm not one of those fans who hates the 80s stuff. It was good pop music. It's just very inferior to their 70s work, which in my opinion, contains some of the most beautiful, compelling, evocative music ever made by any rock band.
I just like songs about cars and girls. Did they have any of those?

You're the snake who stole Genesis from me. Please tell me you didn't pick them for their 80s work! It would suck to see them go to someone who didn't appreciate the greatness of albums like Foxtrot, Selling England by the Pound, and A Trick of the Tail.
They made music in the 70s?

Assuming you aren't joking, that's pretty dire. It's like losing Metallica to someone who picked them for the Load albums and doesn't know they made music in the 80s.
I was teasing. Although I did pick them primarily for their 80s work, as that is the music of theirs that I'm most familiar, so unfortunately you're going to have to be bummed that you lost them to someone who doesn't appreciate them as much as you and others do. Still, if all they had was those last few albums then I wouldn't have picked them. I had them ranked highly on my list primarily because in addition to the fact that I enjoyed their 80s work, I was aware that they had a long history. When filling my island with music I want a range of styles and genres, so even though they might not be one of my all-time greats and even though I'm not as familiar with their entire body of work as others, I thought the pick made sense in creating the best island of artists for me.

They're a great pick. I'm just miffed because they were one of the picks I thought for certain i would have in the bag. i thought their 80s stuff would be considered too cheesy by most folks and that their 70s stuff would be too obscure or too arty for most folks. I especially didn't expect to see a big rap/hip hop fan take them, haha.

With my 6th round selection, I choose:

Counting Crows

This pick will have to make up for losing out on Dave Matthews Band. Counting Crows became popular during my early high school years, and I look back on the band with nostalgia far more than disdain unlike some other hipster music snobs (cough...pdx...rookie...:)). Their harmonized ballad and inventive riffs keep me coming back to remember simpler times and the people I've shared them with.

Sheryl Crow

Have always realy liked her stuff, and really, if we are snatching CDs on the way out the airplane, who's pictures would you rather have scattered across your island? Sheryl's or Phil Collins'? :)

I got into an argument with a professor on a college visit to UofP back in the day who used Counting Crows as an example of modern achievement in rock. (It really was a terrible presentation - CC was just the icing on the cake.) Needless to say, I did not end up at UofP. That's too bad, too. I'm sure the Kandiman and I would have had a good ole time in Stockton. So because of that, I say bleah to the Counting Crows. Bleah.

Don't take it the wrong way; it's entirely personal, Jespher.

This pick (like many future ones, I'm sure) was pretty tough, and I vacillated around several artists I didn't expect to be available here for while before finally settling in on my choice. This selection, I believe, is also the first selection of an artist specifically mentioned in the rules: Van Halen.

So first, you take one of the greatest rock guitarists of all time in Eddie Van Halen. Mix in the highest-octane stage performer of his era in David Lee Roth, and you get a practically unbeatable rock band in the late '70s and early '80s. After one nasty breakup, add a Sammy Hagar and you get another, almost-completely-different (and amazingly, more mature!) band with a steady stream of radio singles. And then there was the Gary Cherone thing, which, now that I have all their music, I'll finally get around to listening to. It's like getting three bands in one! And while the catalog size for either the David Lee or the Sammy years might not justify a sixth round pick, if I'm getting both I've got to run with it.

Years active: 1974-present (Most recent album release 1998, however new album with David Lee Roth is finished and expected by the end of the year)
Catalog: 11 studio albums to date (6 with David Lee Roth, 4 with Sammy Hagar, 1 with Gary Cherone, 7h40m total), 1 live album (Sammy Hagar, 2h21m)
Landmark songs: Runnin' With the Devil, Beautiful Girls, Jump, Why Can't This Be Love, Right Now
Song I keep coming back to:

Yeah, they have been one of the groups lurking out there, but I haven't really liked them since my teenage years so I wasn't going to be the guy.

I wondered how long they'd last and decided if they were around the next time I'd just take em for Roth's work alone.

They were one of those acts I just instantly recognized a passionate dislike for. What some people feel about Anthony Keidis more describes the way I feel about Mr. Duritz. I think only two other bands picked so far elicit this response from me.

Counting Crows is one of several bands about whom (and there are actually a whole string of them from this part of the 90s, now that I think about it) I feel like I would like them more if only I could hate them.

Regardless of genre, technical proficiency, or anything else, I've always felt like all songs should inspire one of two responses: a desire to sing/dance along, or a desire to change the station. I don't think Counting Crows have ever managed either. Just a pretty solid catalog of meh.

I have a similar reaction to them. Mostly because a roommate I had in the late 90s played them ALL THE TIME! I wasn't crazy about them to start with but hearing them "against my will" like that for several years made me downright despise them. I eventually got over it for the most part, though. Now I just find them slightly annoying.

I'm pretty much in the same boat as far as Counting Crows go. I like Mr. Jones, but other than that...meh
I listened to "August and Everything After" not long ago just to refresh my memory and it's actually a really solid album. They're just a case of "not my cup of tea". They seem like a band where you'd have to care a lot about what the lyrics are to like them much, and I just don't (care that much).

That's two bad calls I've made now. I lost Black Sabbath and Van Halen by figuring they'd come back to me one more time. Granted I did get Yes and Depeche Mode, two of my other favorites, but it looks like i could have had all four because no one seems to have been eyeing Yes or Depeche Mode. What a bummer.

They were my next pick. i even had a write up ready to go. I mentioned that I saw the Hagar era as a nice bonus rather than as a mark against them.
Angst-making in the draft is fun! ;)

I'm sure your write-up was better than mine, I kind of had to cobble it together real quick. Anyway, I agree with the Van Hagar era being a bonus. It's a different sound, but I think the first three albums are all pretty solid and had way more than their fair share of radio hits. Balance wasn't so hot, though I really do dig "Don't Tell Me What Love Can Do", it's just the rest of the album doesn't get its hooks into me.

Van Halen.

Awesome.

Van Hagar? It had its moments.
A bit more formulaic than the happy-go-lucky Roth era, but it had some good grooves.

There's more I want to say, but I think it might have an effect on the draft. Let's just say you can't forget about this piece of the VH catalog:

This draft has had no shortage of angst for me. It seems like 3/4 of the people in the draft have picked one or two artists that are among my all time faves. Zep, Metallica, CCR, Genesis, Van Halen, Rush, Skynyrd, Hendrix, Ozzy, Sabbath, and maybe AC/DC, all in my top 20, maybe even top 15. All totaled it pretty much decimated my list. I've only managed to nab four top 20 artists so far.

Doubly so because I'm graduating from UOP in 2 weeks :).

While I was a tad afraid they wouldn't fall to me during the classic rock craze earlier in this draft, I'm really glad they did :)

The Eagles

One thing that I've yet to reveal in this draft, is that I'm also a big country music fan, and I love this band because they do have quite the country feel sometimes :)

I'll always treasure Desperado, Already Gone and of course Hotel California. But that's just scratching the surface of a long and storied catalog.
