Tropical Island Draft Threads -- 2011 Editions

Alright, it has come time to seize the hampster by its horns here, and officially start opening this Lounge back up. People claim that they are still out there, still checking in, so if that is true, its time to give them something worth checking in to see:

For those of you who are new or otherwise unaware of the tradition, for years around here we have passed TDOS (the damned offseason) with a series of game threads here in the lounge, all set up around this conceit: you are shipwrecked on a deserted island. All alone, for eternity. But lucky you, you get to pack/salvage a collection of your favorite movies/music/girls/cars etc. etc. etc. to share your eternal isolation. Unfortunately all of your competitors in the thread are stuck on their own islands, and want to take along their favs too, and there is only one copy of everything. How to decide who gets what? Well by holding a draft of course. Your task? Assemble the best collection of music/movies/girls etc. etc. despite the mean and underhanded attempts of your rival castaways to grab the best goodies first. And then have the board in general vote on who did the best job.

And after having given it some thought, having seen the Tropical Island Draft threads seem to lose a little of their lustre over the years, I thought that maybe what we should do is go back to the beginning, to the big universal threads that started it all. Accordingly I humbly suggest that these 4 drafts form the core of this TDOS's Tropical Island season:

1) The Favorite Movie Draft, 2011 Edition -- as with the first one, with the lone proviso, so as to keep things fresh, that anybody who participated in the first one cannot draft any of the same movies this time around (or perhaps only a handful of the same ones).

2) The Musical Artist Draft, 2011 Edition -- a tweak on the Albums draft of years past. In order to increase competition and to recognize the changing nature of music sales, rather than have draftees draft favorite albums, they will instead draft the entire catalog of a group or individual (has to be the band/singer who's name the album was released under, not a guitarist or some such who just happened to be in multiple bands). So if, for instance, Mr. SlimCitrus drafts Wang Chung, he would get to add everything Wang Chung has ever done, fomr the 80s to the current day, but would not get a side project done by the lead singer under his own name.

3) The Ipod Singles Draft, 2011 Edition -- as with the Movie Draft, in order to keep history from repeating itself, people participating for a second time may not draft songs they drafted in the first draft (or here I was thinking may only draft a limited number of songs a second time so as to keep other peeps guessing).

4) and yes, last, but definitely not least: The Hot Babes Draft, 2011 Edition -- which will of course be the glory of the entire summer. And will also have the "don't draft all the same girls" rule. Which sucks, given just how unbelievably hot my last roster was.

Now in addition, if there is a lockout, which we should know in a few days, I think we can take suggestions for some smaller/nichier drafts (hopefully original ones rather than retreads) to supplement things. And as always, if the ladies of the board think they can actually get together a dedicated enough group of shallow women only interested in men's looks to put together a "Hot Guys Draft", that will of course be welcomed in the name of equality. We can all be shallow together. :)

As in years past, the mods will be involved both to ensure fairness and some level of civility, and to help the people running the drafts with our magical mod abilities. I, of course, will take responsiblity for running the new Hot Babes draft. Its a chore, but somebody has to do it. :p (I even promise not to screw up the voting period, as I have the last couple of times). We will be taking suggestins/applications for mature and dedicated (and this means you have to be able to check the thread at least once a day) people to play commissioner of the other threads. As soon as we have them, we can start signups.

I guarantee a modified list, albeit with the same theme, as some ladies have since moved up, some have moved down, and some ladies that I disqualified last time for being too young have since reached my minimum age qualifier.

And, of course, some old favorites, as long as I pick ahead of Spike... :p

Point of clarification:

Hot babes from last year are not allowed, but babes from previous editions are, or all all prior hot babes verboten? If so to the latter, I'm going to have to bring my "C" game.

No, ANY hot babe is aobviously allowed. :) Just has to be some rule, whether it be babes, movies, music, whatever, to prevent individual people from drafting the same girls/movies/music they did last time.

Anyway, looking for 3 commissioners of the Mpovies, Musical Artists, and Ipod Singles threads.

Oh TDOS drafts, how I have missed you. I never got a shake at the Movie Draft, and would love to be involved there. May I offer my commissioning experience to lead a Tropical Island Movie Draft?

Yep, you've commished in the past, so you want movies, they're yours.

I think we should do another video game one as well, with similar rules that you're thinking Brick. I'd vote to consider multiplayer games as well this time around, I messed that up. Heck, if it could be put off to start sometime in early August or later, I'll even throw my name out there to commission it again

Ahh... I was hoping we would finish the playoffs for the all-time Kings draft.

Apparently I drafted Dick Bavetta without realizing it and he changed the rules costing me the title I know I would have won.

I'll definitely take part in some, though not all, of these drafts. I think another fantasy NBA draft would be fun again. Maybe a limit of 2 or 3 players of who you drafted in the last one.

Just don't start until after the 4th of July - I'ma going to Idaho, and I don't know that they have the interwebs there yet.

Ahhh... Smells Like TDOS Spirit.

I think another fantasy NBA draft would be fun again.
I second that! Will be glad to take part in one of those, especially now that the lockout is here...

Notwithstanding, I can also do the babes draft this time. As we are expanding overseas I might find some gems for you from across the Atlantic. I do call for more relaxed regulation this time though...:D

I vote for this one as well, that was a blast.

So would there be enough interest in resurrecting both the video game and fantasy NBA drafts once again? Or better yet, enough time (assuming the lockout ends in time for the season)?

Was there an NBA draft here before, or just the all-times Kings roster? If we did an all-time NBA draft there wouldn't be much overlap with the all-time Kings one. :p :( ;)

One other question. does one draft end then another begins or will they run simultaneously?
Simultaneous drafting creates chaos. It's been done, but since a lockout is looming, we might wait for one to finish (or be close to finishing) before starting another. That would be my vote.

I was waiting to see how things turned out with Movies first. As the others have mentioned, too many at once perhaps confuses the lines etc. but can be useful if things start to drag in the main. Fortunately with the late start, and the looming lockout, as well as a dedicated crew so far, pacing has not been any sort of problem in Movies, and if it keeps on rolling I don't see why we can't wait until near the end of it to start up Music (earlier Slim offered to maybe manage that one I think).

The first time around some of these lingered nearly two months, with peeps often taking the full 24 and then some. At that sort of pace I think having more than one going on was handy. At current pace Movie coudl take less than a month. Much better pace and enough that I don't know we need a 2nd one competing just yet.

Question about the iPod draft: Does the "Rule of 5" apply to both of the previous iPod drafts (original + decades)? Figured it might be best to clear that up now ahead of time

Heck, I didn't even remember there being a Decades. I would say just the original, but I'm open to argumentation on that point.

Ok, with the movies thread winding down (SLOWLY) thought it was about time to bump this thread to start trying to put together a roster of people that want to do a music variation. This time the music flavor will be drafting entire catalogs of work by musical artists, so as to increase competition between drafters (the albums draft did well 4 years ago, but only occasionally did somebody steal somebody else's pick, especially later in the draft). So you don't just draft a single album, you draft the entire artist. You draft Britney Spears, you get ALL of her wonderful work, and nobody else can have any of it. And you can listen to it again, an again, and again, and again...for eternity on your island.

As always these drafts work best with somewhere in the range of 12-20 participants and on these major topics 20 rounds is a standard. I know peeps have at least 20 different artists in their ipods (or in their vinyl collections for those who actually used to dodge dinosaurs on the way to school), so I'd be surprised if its a problem.

If anybody wants to play Tropical Island God/Goddess and run the draft, taking applications for that too. Since I added in the rules tweak, I know I might get stuck being the guy running the show on this one, but since I know for sure I will be running one if TDOS lasts long enough for us to get to a pretty girls set of islands, I'd be happy to hand this one off to anyone interested.
