Alright, it has come time to seize the hampster by its horns here, and officially start opening this Lounge back up. People claim that they are still out there, still checking in, so if that is true, its time to give them something worth checking in to see:
For those of you who are new or otherwise unaware of the tradition, for years around here we have passed TDOS (the damned offseason) with a series of game threads here in the lounge, all set up around this conceit: you are shipwrecked on a deserted island. All alone, for eternity. But lucky you, you get to pack/salvage a collection of your favorite movies/music/girls/cars etc. etc. etc. to share your eternal isolation. Unfortunately all of your competitors in the thread are stuck on their own islands, and want to take along their favs too, and there is only one copy of everything. How to decide who gets what? Well by holding a draft of course. Your task? Assemble the best collection of music/movies/girls etc. etc. despite the mean and underhanded attempts of your rival castaways to grab the best goodies first. And then have the board in general vote on who did the best job.
And after having given it some thought, having seen the Tropical Island Draft threads seem to lose a little of their lustre over the years, I thought that maybe what we should do is go back to the beginning, to the big universal threads that started it all. Accordingly I humbly suggest that these 4 drafts form the core of this TDOS's Tropical Island season:
1) The Favorite Movie Draft, 2011 Edition -- as with the first one, with the lone proviso, so as to keep things fresh, that anybody who participated in the first one cannot draft any of the same movies this time around (or perhaps only a handful of the same ones).
2) The Musical Artist Draft, 2011 Edition -- a tweak on the Albums draft of years past. In order to increase competition and to recognize the changing nature of music sales, rather than have draftees draft favorite albums, they will instead draft the entire catalog of a group or individual (has to be the band/singer who's name the album was released under, not a guitarist or some such who just happened to be in multiple bands). So if, for instance, Mr. SlimCitrus drafts Wang Chung, he would get to add everything Wang Chung has ever done, fomr the 80s to the current day, but would not get a side project done by the lead singer under his own name.
3) The Ipod Singles Draft, 2011 Edition -- as with the Movie Draft, in order to keep history from repeating itself, people participating for a second time may not draft songs they drafted in the first draft (or here I was thinking may only draft a limited number of songs a second time so as to keep other peeps guessing).
4) and yes, last, but definitely not least: The Hot Babes Draft, 2011 Edition -- which will of course be the glory of the entire summer. And will also have the "don't draft all the same girls" rule. Which sucks, given just how unbelievably hot my last roster was.
Now in addition, if there is a lockout, which we should know in a few days, I think we can take suggestions for some smaller/nichier drafts (hopefully original ones rather than retreads) to supplement things. And as always, if the ladies of the board think they can actually get together a dedicated enough group of shallow women only interested in men's looks to put together a "Hot Guys Draft", that will of course be welcomed in the name of equality. We can all be shallow together.
As in years past, the mods will be involved both to ensure fairness and some level of civility, and to help the people running the drafts with our magical mod abilities. I, of course, will take responsiblity for running the new Hot Babes draft. Its a chore, but somebody has to do it. (I even promise not to screw up the voting period, as I have the last couple of times). We will be taking suggestins/applications for mature and dedicated (and this means you have to be able to check the thread at least once a day) people to play commissioner of the other threads. As soon as we have them, we can start signups.
