Grant Napier to Continue at 1140????? - Maloofs will Clean House (IMHO)

#1
A question was just asked to Napier if he will go down to Anaheim with the franchise. And his exact quote was "my intentions are to continue to do this show....I have young children that live in El Dorado Hills and my intention is to continue to do this show".

I believe that when the Kings move in a few weeks that the Maloofs are going to clean house outside of Geoff Petrie. Petrie may not want to go with them, but I am sure that they will want to keep him.

He does his show on the road all the time. Doesn't mean he cant do play by play, it would just add more road days.

I can see Grant moving to KNBR or something (whatever the 680am station call letters are). We won't have much need for an all sports talk radio station here if the Kings leave. During the Kings off months the show gets real stale, and repetitive with Raider, and Giant questions from a lot of people that are in the bay area anyway.

KNBR has a weak staff, and I can see Grant taking over a midday or late day show down there. Would keep him close to home.

If they let Grant go now, it'll be years too late as far as I'm concerned. I am still baffled by who MS&E keep and who they let go.

But it's probably moot anyway, as I'd expect they're shopping for buyers for the station.

Probably because when compared to the rest of the clowns calling games in the league, he's among the better nonnational guys.

KNBR is actually looking for this kinda guy now ... so, it makes sense.

Yeah, the guy I can't stand is Jerry. I like his insight and knowledge from being around so long, but I hate when he tries to be entertaining with his stupid catch-phrases. Jerry, you can't be Hubie Brown and Mark Jackson combined. As for Grant, I do think he's one of the better team announcers, and for guys who have had such a history with the team, I can't see them letting these guys go (especially G-Man) unless they are looking to re-brand the team ala Sonics to Thunder and have a fresh start as a totally different identity.

Grant ain't moving. He's a local big fish. At his point in his life with a family, I doubt he aspirations for a larger market.
Big fish in shrinking ponds might well want o hop over someplace where they can still get attention. Take away his Kings affiliation and how big will Grant be locally? And who is going to care about him outside of Sacto then? With no national stage all doors would be shut.

1. CBS radio is why he gets to fill in for Rome on his national show, not because of working for the kings.
2. I find it hard to believe that he couldn't get another gig with a team if he really wanted one considering how long he's been in the business and his connections.

I don't think Grant will survive in ratings without the Kings. His entire show depends on them, even in the off-season. I don't know what he'll do. He needs something else. People overlook his lack of... well, any entertaining quality whatsoever just to hear the Kings mentioned.

The Maloofs own 1140?

Maybe you should update Wikipedia (and everyplace else) since you obviously know what's REALLY going on....

680 is the Warriors/Giants/Bay Area AM station. Why would he go there when he could just stay with 1140?

I stand corrected.

People who listen to KHTK hear constant reminders that large amounts of the daytime content are provided by Maloof Sports & Entertainment. I thought they had a stake in the physical station, but apparently they just have some sort of long-term deal.

Instead, I'll expect Grant & company to go as soon as that deal can safely be terminated.

Here is what I think will happen. Grant has two boys ages 14 and 12 and they have lived in the area since 1987 and his wife is a flight attendant so that with all the frequent flier miles he gets with the kings he probably flys for free. Anyway I bet the kings or whatever they will be called will keep grant, jerry, and gary gerould on radio to whatever tv/radio station they get a deal wit down there and grant can get an apartment down there and still do his daily radio show on 1140 because he has a seperate contract with 1140 and the kings. So he does his show still daily from Anaheim or whever he is at on the road and also I wouldnt be shocked if 1140 picked up the kings games next year even if there in Anaheim. They will need something to fill the airwaves for sports broadcasts.

I SERIOUSLY doubt that 1140 will pick up the games next year in Anaheim. That's just adding more salt to the wound for Sacramento.

Never going to happen. Tim Roye couldn't even break in to the radio picture down there. There's a lot of politics that goes on at KNBR. They have their little circle. Believe me, Grant wouldn't be welcome, and I don't think he'd want to go. I also think its nonsense to think that suddenly people wouldn't even want a sports talk radio show in sacramento. Just because your no longer interested because of the Kings, doesn't mean everyone else in the world wants to curl up in a little ball and ignore the rest of the sports world. Believe it or not, people do call in about the Giants, 49er's, and A's. Plus, the Kings haven't left yet.

I know you don't like him, but believe it or not, there are people that do, like me. Bottom line is the ratings. Grants radio show is one of the highest rated radio shows in his timeslot in northern california. Now that may be hard for you to swallow, but its a fact. Now if you ask me if I like him as a person, thats another story.

That and the comment about him renting an apartment in Anaheim should keep him with the team. During NFL season tho' it would get dicey as he has season tickets to his NY Giants and goes to most/all their home games.

Which again leads me to ask, what is his competition? What sports talk radio program is going head-to-head against his that is losing to him? Who has he beat to make his "Number One" claim mean something?

As I mentioned a couple of months ago, there's some local meatball here who can truthfully claim to have been the "Number One local sports talk radio show in Hampton Roads" for the last twenty years... But, what goes unmentioned in that claim is the fact that he's also been the only local sports talk radio show in Hampton Roads, for at least the thirteen years that I've had legal residence here.

If Napear isn't acutally beating someone in the same genre head-to-head, the "Number One" claim means ****-all, in my opinion. Who's his competition?

so then i wouldnt be to far off if i guessed that grants show is one of the LOWEST rated sports radio shows...in his time slot...in northern california. i mean if there are only 2 or 3 other options you can say he is top 3...but he's also the bottom 3

My dislike for Grant really has nothing to do with it. Gary Gerould's basically in the same boat, and I like him.

They're employees of Maloof Sports and Entertainment, who have had an obvious interest in evangelizing the Kings (and, formerly, the Monarchs) in the Sacramento area. Rivercats, UCD events and Sac State events are already covered by other PBP people at other stations. Monarchs are defunct, Kings seem to be bolting. What does that leave them to cover? Pro games in Oakland? Why in the world should MS&E want to subsidize that?

There's nothing left for MS&E employees -- whether Grant or anyone else -- to DO in Sac. THAT's the problem.

I have no idea; that's why I asked the question. Maybe there's a whole bunch. Maybe, as it is here in Hampton Roads, he's the only one.

I would LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE for Grant to replace Damon Bruce. Damon Bruce is so terrible and misinformed it's painful and frustrating to listen to.
He's a pain in my ear.. I don't even bother with radio when I am at work in the afternoon. I listen to my ipod.
