Don't listen to this sort of junk revisionism. Last night's game was the FIRST home game since rumors started dropping about the Maloofs negotiating with Anaheim and potentially filing for relocation. The FIRST. Prior to that, signals were mostly good that Kings would not file for relocation (this year) - the new naming rights deal with Power Balance, the timing of the potential lockout, the city council actually being serious about things and greenlighting the ICON/Taylor group to do the financial feasibility analysis. Kings fans who were concerned with the arena issue were not idle, they were justifiably focusing their efforts on getting an arena built - the surefire, longterm step necessary to get the Kings to stay.
Then, we were suddenly hit with the news that we might not be safe for the relocation deadline after all. An arena doesn't help keep the Kings in town if the Kings leave before an arena is built. Priorities changed suddenly. The sellout last night was not about showing the Maloofs that we can sell the arena out. They knew that. They've known that from the start, when we sold it out every night for years on end. The sellout was about showing the Maloofs that we want the Kings in town, that we are willing to take extraordinary measures to keep the Kings in town, and that we (Kings fans, at least) are willing to work hard to get an arena off the ground in the coming year in order to keep the Kings in town. The sellout was about reminding the Maloofs how special our relationship is with the team, how passionate we are, and yes, how much we will be hurt if the Kings leave. Keep in mind that the Maloofs are known to emotional people. They don't want to hurt us. We were asking them, to their faces, for a one-year stay of execution. And you know what? They knew we would be doing it, and they showed up to listen to us. They could have stayed away. They came out to hear us.
That's what last night was about, not about attendance numbers. Anybody who says differently is fooling themselves or trolling.
