Kings May File for Relocation Before Deadline

If you guys survive this scare you all have to get involved -- all of you who are Sacto area or Sacto attached -- in efforts to push through an arena in the next year. You might already have lost the Kings, but if you haven't there's almost no doubt that you will next year. It will be a one year repreive to come out of the woodwork and put pressure on to make something happen before the clock strikes 12.
Just thinking out loud so this will ramble...
I wonder if the hiring of Jim Grey and Bill Walton should have been seen as more of a premonition of what was to come. Hmmm
I would say that the only real "tie" the Maloofs have to this area is the good times we all had together when the team made it's big run. I could be wrong, but I don't think they have really invested in any other part of the city's infrastructure. Anyone know if I am wrong here? The only thing that has kept the Maloofs here with the team this long since the team slide has been memories of how fun it once was. They have lost a lot of money in the past few years necessitating the sale of the family distribution business and the problems at the Palms. It is no secret that the Maloofs aren't in Sacramento because they like the quiet family lifestyle here. The Maloofs are in every way all about the glitz and being over the top. The Palms being the self-proclaimed "party spot" in Vegas and even being involved in any way with the Real Housewives franchise makes that abundantly clear. I am pretty sure that given the choice every one of the Kings players, as well as nearly all of the players in the NBA would choose to be based in Southern California rather than Northern California. Plus, being located in OC, it makes it much easier for the Maloofs to tie in Vegas vacations at the Palms with team advertising since Vegas is a more natural and convenient party vacation spot for Southern Californians. If the Kings are no longer making money here, there is no reason in the Maloof's minds, that they should stay here. They don't have the family heartfelt connections to the area that would carry emotions to stay even if they were losing money. Finally, there is no longer support from Stern and the league mindtrust to stay in Sacramento which should not be overlooked as a very important thing.

We shouldn't discount Stern's threat of contraction. The Maloof brothers are not married family men looking to bring up their kids in a nice town. They are playboys who were willing to sell off the business that their dad bequeathed to them. The Kings are a big expensive toy to them. At one time they had the keys to this city, and it was fun for them. Now they are no longer the respected big fish that they once were here. Not as much fun playing with that toy anymore. But they still don't want the big bully grabbing it away from them. Better to be the "beloved guys finally bringing the NBA to the OC" then the guys who lost their team to contraction because they were in a deadend half full arena. The fans in OC will love them just as much as we did when they took over here. Afterall, the faces don't look THAT different when they are wearing team colors, right?

Like I said before, when the kings were the best team in the league and when we had the longest winning streak in the league AND the economy was pretty good we still had the same issues that we do today. Its not about the product on the floor its a whole another political game and close minded approach to an issue that is much greater than the Kings. Whether kings stay or go, the city needs a new sports and entertainment complex!

Since the Kings started trying to get a new arena built the record of the team has ranged form 61 wins to 17 wins, and everything inbetween. That's just another excuse. One amongst many that has Sacramento on the brink of losing its only major sports team. Be the only one of the Top 30 media markets that could say that. Which is, ahem, inexcusable.
