what was the last movie you watched?

The Big Lebowski - I really, really want my couple hours back. Really. Don't know what I was expecting, but this movie really didn't deliver on any fronts. Except maybe the most swear words per minute? It really loses the effect after the first, say, hundred times or so......and just seems jouvenile and stupid.

Still haven't seen that one yet (TBL). It's become so iconic though and so many seem to love it that I'm surprised you didn't Warhawk but then I haven't seen it and don't know anything about it really.

I think the Big Lebowski gets better on repeated viewings, but odds are if you waited this long to see it then it probably will never be your cup of tea.

Were you out in the Mojave desert with us last week when we watched it and didn't let the board know you were going?

The coincidence is astounding.

Funny part is, for me it had some good potential - I like some quirky movies. And I really liked the main actors. It just fails in execution (IMHO).

There were some funny parts and interesting ideas there, but it just couldn't pull it off. Like instead of trying to put in some better dialogue, they just decided to wing it and cuss a lot and think that was "cool" or something. And when that is what you decide to hang your hat on, you know the movie has problems.

If that's really your problem it may be worth a rewatch. I think there is a lot more to the dialogue than dropping the F bomb repeatedly and it really opens up on the 2nd and 3rd viewings. I don't think the swearing was done in an effort to "be cool", its just that that is how those characters would really talk. To be honest I forgot about how rough the language is because its the characters and all the hokey dream sequences that stand out to me the most. Then I get to thinking and I'm like "whoah, they do swear a lot, don't they?" but I'm still reveling in the absurdity of a guy in a purple jumpsuit licking his bowling ball and threatening another guy who was insane enough to pull a gun on someone for a foot foul dispute in a bowling league.

That isn't the main problem but it really detracts from the movie for me. Like I said, I thought the movie had some good ideas and I liked the actors, but it just didn't carry it off in execution very well. Just kind of a "meh" movie, and the excessive language just doesn't help at all ("bad" language doesn't bother me in the least in moderation). When every third word is the "F" word, your dialogue really needs to be worked on before you start filming. Really.

Maybe I am just not the target audience, but I love all kinds of different movies, including some offbeat ones. This one just didn't do it for me for whatever reason.

Not worth watching again for me. Glad you like it, no problem for me either way obviously, but I really didn't think it was all it was cracked up to be.

With Dennis Hopper passing I decided to go back and watch Blue Velvet again. What a amazing performance. Truly one of the most intensely disturbing characters ever.

David Lynch best piece of work as far as I'm concerned, although its not for the faint of heart.

I also went back and watched Love and Death this weekend. Great movie, probably my favorite Woody Allen film. One of his funniest for sure.

Give it up, whats your favorite Lynch film?
Film IDK it might be Blue Velvet actually, but my fave work of his is Twin Peaks which I only recently watched actually. CBS I think has it streaming and what they did not have (pilot, the movie) I DLed.

EDIT: I missed this series first time around because the title reminded me of the outdoorsy type shows that were out at that time like Northern Exposure.

Great show so I can see where your coming from. I'm Just glad to see you didn't say Dune. :D

Hehe I liked that one too actually. Not great maybe but not worthy of the spite that's piled on it either IMO. I need to review Elephant Man and Eraserhead- it's been decades since I've seen them.
Dune really isn't that bad. Unfortunately Dune falls into the trap of a lot of adaptations where the book is so great that it creates unreasonable expectations for the film.

Agreed. I like Dune though just because it is so different, even if it massacres the book at times. Most movies do when they are from a good book (as it is impossible to include everything faithfully) so I tend to give them a little slack there.

Unreasonable expectations such as coherence and comprehensibility? Not to mention avoiding lookign damn silly?

That movie was a disaster. And really, you could not have picked a worse director to try to bring coherence to such complex material. He thrives on incoherence, although at that time the unfortunates who hired him for the job did not truly know that.

Its not a great movie, but my point was it takes way more **** then it deserves. Its a average sci-fi movie. Its notoriety for being one of the worse sci-fi films ever has a lot to do with its pedigree. A great director/writer adapting a fantastic book raises people expectations, and when the result is middle of road I think its more likely to receive a overly negative response.

I personally kind of enjoy the look and feel of the movie. The narrative, well its a mess with some serious pacing issues, which isn't uncommon when adapting a book like Dune. I will admit that you make a good point that Lynch probably didn't help in that area.

Yup the feel of it rocked.

I need to say upfront that I like a lot of movies that most don't. If it get's bad reviews it piques my interest- I'm a lover of bad film and I make no apologies.

My health isn't great, I don't work and I don't leave the house as much as I used to so I watch a ton of movies. I've always had a great love for film since I was a kid though. I love me some really corny 70's and 80's flicks as well as more artistic endeavors.

That said the last movie I watched was The Net (1995), revisiting it so see if it was as good as I remember it.

Movies that are early in star's careers can come off as good simply because we are not familiar with this actor/actress and they are new and exciting. The years go by and we get used to seeing them and their style etc. When that happens I like to go back to those early movies to see if the movie was as good as remembered or if it were simply the newness of the actor in question.

I re-watched The Net in order to determine whether that was the case for Sandra Bullock and this movie. I remembered the movie the be fast paced, exciting and good but the second viewing reminded me that there were many slow parts, some unbelievable plot twists and it just lost a little luster. I liked it both viewings despite that. It's worth watching for the unintentional comic relief the ancient computers and electronics provide. :D
I remember being amazed that she ordered a pizza online. That didnt actually happen for another 10 years or so. I dont remember being able to order pizzas online before 2005.

Last movie I watched? Tenacious D and the Pick of Destiny. It gets dumber every time I see it, and that's fine by me :)

The one before that was Kickass. What a great take on the traditional superhero movie!

Yes, on the heels of Debbie Gibson's classic turn in Mega Shark vs. Giant Octopus, where do you go to trump that '80s pop nostalgia in your nature-gone-wild B-movie? Tiffany, that's where!

There were at least a handful of "I'm late, I've got a show at the mall" jokes to be made, and there was definitely a sequence where they subtly played on the lyrics to I Think We're Alone Now, but the single classic moment from the film was the lying-on-the-back-repeated-piranha-kick shot. I think we rewound that like four times.

Epic.

Nice! I don't usually go for outright campy, I meant I like Rob Schneider movies and such but that one looks cool.

I remember a movie from the 70's just called "Piranha" I think, kinda like the ants one. Great stuff. I don't think it'll have the same effect on me it did then though.

Good to see Johnny Bravo workin too. :D

Piranha is a classic. James Cameron's first big directing gig was the sequel (featuring flying Piranhas), though he was basically fired from the project and had no say in the final cut.

It's being remade in 3D for summer release.

I just IMDB'd this, and this is a 2010 movie . Wow. Well, they got one thing right; there's no better way to save mankind than to create huge piranhas

The A Team - It was just ok. I would wait until it comes out on DVD.

The other night I watched Alice in Wonderland. It was visually stunning. And the acting by Johnny Depp was very good.
