The first set of stats were from Andrew Bogut when he was 22. Within 4 years he makes an all star team.

The second set is from Hawes last year. I don't see a significant discrepancy between the two.

Centers take time to develop. Hawes may not be the toughest guy and he has definitely taken a step backwards this year. With that said, he is only 22 and he will mature physically and, I think more importantly, mentally. I don't think we will know what he is until he is 25.

First line... Quincy Douby's first year

Second line... Louis William's first year. Going by this, Quincy is going to be as good as lou Williams. We gave up on him too easy.

Moral of the story: Rookie stat comparison is bs, as player trajectory is impossible to predict whatsoever.

I never advocated for dumping him into a trash can whatsoever. I am critical of him. The reason is because I am asking of him only what he can provide. "If you can do it once, you can do it every time," is what my old coach used to say. Not to say that if you hit the halfcourt shot once, you can do it everytime, but that SHOULD be your goal. Robotlike accuracy and precision. Again, I never said give up on him, I never said trade him. I just require of him waht he can provide.

As for too much bulk, a lot of people have a misconception that if you go to the gym once a week, you might accidentally gain so much muscle around your torso that you cannot have your arms flat on your sides. It's both preposterous and an insult to those who lift. Spencer Hawes came into the league at 13% body fat. Oden came in at 8%, and Brook Lopez came in at 6%. People say he lost weight and put on muscle over the offseason. I see very little change. Keep in mind that I said lose fat, gain muscle. If he is at the same weight with more muscle and less fat, he can not be slower than he is. And for whomever posted that he uses his lithe body to get past centers... that is false. Watch a game. Thanks.

I follow NBA a lot, not just kings. I am aware that there are precious few servicable centers in the NBA, and even less at Spencer's age. However, his age is not of importance to me. He has been in the league for 3 years. He has been playing basketball for a long time. He has known about what he needs to do to his body for just as long. The things that come out of his mouth (keep in mind everyone says what a smart guy he is) has been thought out. They show what kind of person he is, and probably what kind of player he will end up being. I'd rather have Noah at the time of the draft, and I'd rather have Noah now. I don't care if Hawes has a higher ceiling. Show me you want it. Show me you want to win, show me you want the ball, show me you will do what it takes.

I only ask that he do what he can to fulfill his potential. He has not done that up to this point. Can anyone dispute that?

PS, a banger is a style, but if you get in there and fight for a rebound, that's getting in there and fighting for a rebound. How you do it is up to you. I guess effort is a style too now?

PPS: I appreciate your efforts to respond to all of these posts baja
Sorry, I didn't mean to imply that you wanted throw Hawes into a trash can. That just seems to be the attitude of some of the posters. I guess I'm just surprised at how angry some of these people get. I just don't get the name calling. I certainly understand people's frustration. I get frustrated too. But if I got frustrated with someone that worked for me when I had my own business, I didn't go out into the shop and call him a ***** or a wuss. I never thought I had to go punch an employee in the face to get is A** in gear. Thats the kind of crap bully's or children do. Not adults! Of course, I'm not refering to you, but others on this fourm.

Anyway, as far as Hawes conditioning goes, I have no idea what kind of condition he's in. He's certainly in good enough condition to run up and down the floor without getting winded. How hard he worked out during the offseason, I have no answer for. Some people have a difficult time putting on extra muscle. I'm sure that Marcus Camby has been in a weight room or two, but he hardly looks like superman. He is an example though, of a player thats a very effective defender without looking like Dwight Howard.

Which to me means that there's no excuse for Hawes not being at least a decent defender. There's no reason he shouldn't be able to grab at least 8 boards a game. Thompson and Brockman get rebounds because they block out under the basket. If they don't get it, then usually one of their teammates will get it. Hawes seldom blocks out. When he does, wa la, he rebounds better. Its all about effort. When he puts in the effort, he has games like the last one. His problem is that simply doesn't do it every game.

So agree with most of your premise about Hawes. I just don't get angry about it. And if I start to get angry, I just grab a cervesa and go out and watch the seagulls fly over the bay. I wish they would quite crapping on my patio table though.:)

I'd really like to see more improvement from Hawes, but some comments seem to say, as fact, that Hawes is not working out or in the weight room or watching what he's eating or making any effort. Yet there have been articles in the Bee about this. Could he do more? Quite possibly, but since I don't know exactly how much he works out or what he eats, I hesitate to say he does nothing.

http://www.sacbee.com/kings/story/2051843.html 07/14/09 – Voison article

Underneath that sweaty T-shirt, Hawes' shoulders appear broader and thicker. He has added approximately 10 pounds to his 242-pound frame without increasing body fat. (Jason Jones of the Bee, also reported this. He worked out with Brock a lot last summer.)
Hawes' comment in pre-season:
But I've been working hard all summer, six days a week, following (strength coach) Daniel Shapiro's program. I wanted to come down and show coach what I've been doing."
Referencing the 2008 summer in the same article (I couldn’t find the original article):

..Hawes, who reduced his body fat to 8 percent and added muscle tone last offseason…
Shapiro also goes food shopping with a lot of these guys, to help them learn what to buy and eat. The Bee reported on one place he takes them - Dream Dinners, near Arco. https://dreamdinners.com/main.php?page=contactus&store_id=108&state=California Looks yummy, but I couldn't afford it very often. :)

My "Put up or shut up" comment was directed at Hawes. My comment on people defending Hawes to death was simply to show both sides of the coin. I believe we should be able to call out players that we feel are underperforming, or just flat out suck. I did not understand how we can call ourselves fans while not being able to criticize our own. Yes, I understand there are way too many doom and gloom people that over react, but there are just as many that want to see these guys perform and are fed up. I will again say that I just stated my opinion. There are numerous posts just in this thread alone that are much worse than what I wrote, so I wanted to clear up any misconceptions. I do not see things black and white. I simply have a shorter leash for players.

I don't understand your comparison of Bynum and Howard. My vision of a Center is one that lives in the paint - I used Bynum because someone earlier in the thread mentioned him. To be very succint - Hawes has not shown any improvement for a big man, and I've lost patience. Doesn't mean I hate the guy, or like Bynum better. No, Hawes does not have Bynums body, and yes, he is still very young, but if you are going to be drafted as a C and play C, shouldn't we have begun to see some of that by now? If not, should we not be frustrated? If he is going to be playing to his strenghts, what are they?
Don't disagree with much of what you said. I get frustrated too, and yes, of course you have the right to voice your frustration over it. I didn't mean to single you out, but unfortunately for you, you seemed to be the most civil of the protesters:D. Its not the voicing of opinion that bothers me. Its the tenor of that voicing of opinion. Its really hard to have a civil discussion with someone that wants to punch Hawes in his pimplily face to get his attention. I'm all about discussion, but I'm not into hatred. I reserve hate for people like Hitler and Stalin. Certainly not Spencer Hawes.

So here's my opinion on Hawes. He needs to get his act together. He needs to get stronger. I'm willing to give him the rest of this year and next offseason, and then see how he performs at the beginning of next season. If nothing changes, then we either trade him or we simply let him go. And, if the right deal comes along that makes sense for us before the trade deadline, then we trade him then. So I'm not in love with the guy. I still think he can be an effective center in the league. But its up to him.:)

You know how actions speak louder than words??? Actions on the court speak louder than articles.

Here's two things. If his boydfat was 8% you would see much more definition at least in his arms, the easiest place to have definition.

The only reason you would, is if the muscles were just small (for his frame). If that's the case he needs to put more muscle on.

People talk about Hilton Armstron being twiggy and he's 6' 11" 235lbs. Hawes is an inch or two taller than that and listed at 245lbs. That's pretty much the equivalent. So he IS pretty twiggy.

The OP constantly rips Spencer while totally ignoring anything positive about his game. He does the exact opposite for JT, and when he rarely does acknowledge something negative about his game, he quickly has an excuse for it. There have been breakdowns of their games in long posts on the topic, and he still acts this way, so as long as he continues this, I will act on the opposite side of his spectrum with little purpose other than to crap on his worthless comments.

This forum, I'm afraid, is starting to suck.

That was nothing against you personally, simply an observation of how things have deteriorated around here. Similar to the team, of course, I guess that's how it goes.

Great post. The only thing that would have made it better would have been a graphic put down of Hawes with words seldom used around children.;)

if anyone needs to be bagged on now, its jt. not hawes
I think they BOTH deserve criticism. But they are on the Kings for now. So we might as well root for them to get better instead of trashing them and bagging on them. What good does that do?

I'm the first to say that Hawes is a total Wuzz! He has had 3 years to work out and build up some muscle on that waffle thin frame. He just HASN'T, and I think that is what makes people so angry about him! I hope he does finally get it together and work out and succeed with the Kings.

JT I just dont know. He was getting better. Then he just suddenly wasnt. That is more puzzling than Hawes. At least we expect Hawes to play badly. JT was expected to improve. There was expectations that have kind of disintegrated. For a moment, we thought he might make the sophomore team. But he just fell off the map basketball wise and he hasn't overcome the "FUNK" he says he is in.

I truly hope that JT, Hawes, and K-Mart are able to turn it around and play like we all know they CAN play. There is that HOPE that we keep having that keeps us coming back for more. The HOPE that Hawes gets tough, the HOPE that JT is able to put his game back together, and that K-Mart, a legendary scorer who has put the ball in the basket for his entire career can overcome the FUNK that he is in. I hope that TONIGHT is the NIGHT that K-Mart breaks out and has a decent game!!

I just don't understand why Petrie would draft a guy comparable to Brad Miller in terms of 'soggy waffles' lol. It seems like Hawes is definately NBA worthy, and hopefully will become good, but I wish that we had a center that people were kind of afraid of. A center that intimidates other NBA players. If we had a center like that, our team's image would really change. Plus, Shaq might not call us the 'Sacramento Queens' anymore. Ouch.
