Alright I'll participate. I wasn't gonna do any more of these drafts this summer but I'm after getting 2 recruitment PMs to join this thing so I'll give it a go I guess. I'm probably just gonna go off the top of my head though, at least for now
That's usually what I do all the time anyway. Great to have you :).

I would like to play.

And because hairsplitting rule questions are obnoxious I won't ask about Candle in the Wind by Elton John.

sorry....

Anyway if you're not too mad at me for this.. I still want to play :)

Just an observation, if there are 16 GMs with 30 picks each and 18 hours per pick, if they all time out each pick, this draft will take 360 days to complete the 480 picks. Should the powers that be consider reducing the number of picks from 10 for each decade to 5?

We should pick 2 songs at a time. That would shrink the time frame to the same as you proposed.

Nope. We aren't going to pick two songs at a time. And nope, I'm not going to cut down the number of songs at this point. If it drags, we can always shorten it later but I don't think we're going to be waiting the outside 18 hours for each pick...

:)

EDIT: Looking back at last year's IPOD singles draft, I may have to acknowledge that 30 songs is a lot (as far as time concerns)...and reduce it to 8 songs per decade, for a total of 24 per each person.

I've made one more modification to the draft, simply because I know how it feels to be at the end of the draft and have to wait through two rounds before another pick. I've changed this to be a straight draft, like what they do in the NBA and NFL. If you get the #1 pick, you get the #1 pick in each round. If you get the #16 pick, you get the #16 pick in each round. I think it's much easier to make selections if you aren't handicapped by being at either end of the snake.

Last chance... If I don't get two more participants, we'll go with 14. I'm thinking of a noon PDT cutoff for entries. I've already requested that a neutral third party do the randomizing so we should be able to start the draft by Friday, 6 p.m. PDT. Since LPKingsFan won't be available until Tuesday, we'll skip him until he returns. At this point, I'll go with 8 songs from each decade and if the draft progresses quickly enough and there's a desire to extend it out to 10 from each decade, we can always do that.

We could mathematically randomize if you wish... I could potentially do it, but I am not impartial... just a guy with knowledge of randomizing draft orders.

Mathematical randomization is very easy -- I could literally do it in a second and a half. The trick is to do it in such a way that everybody believes that nobody cheated.

There's a great randomizer online I've used a number of times (www.randomizer.org). What I did was ask someone who isn't participating in the draft to obtain the sequence for me - just seemed like the more impartial thing to do, you know?

The wait is over. Thanks to Widowmaker2 for providing the random sequence of numbers. I'm updating the thread and the draft will begin as soon as it's done...

rule question (sorry).

One of the first few songs I am thinking of taking was not released as a single, but is only an album track (that has gotten a ton of airplay - a ton).

I didn't realize it was not released as a single till I went to allmusic.com

Is it eligible? And one other question - can you use a showtune not released as a single?

I guess "single" is a misnomer. As long as the song was released at some point for public consumption - either on an album, CD or as a single - I have no problem. I guess we'll have to play this by ear, so to speak. Cuts on albums are eligible - subject to further clarification if necessary.

I'm not at all sure about showtunes, however. If it's part of a soundtrack I'd think it would be the same as the "rule" above.

I really don't want to make a lot of rules and restrictions ahead of time. I think people should use their best judgment on something with the proviso that if it's too outside the intention of the draft it may be overruled.

Sound fair?

First pick! Well aren't I the lucky one! Here we go!

WON'T GET FOOLED AGAIN - The Who (1971)

[yt=Won't Get Fooled Again]Rp6-wG5LLqE[/yt]

I'm going to try to avoid overlapping too much with our music drafts from last summer, so rather than starting off with Baba O'Riley, I'm going with another one of my favorite songs from The Who. As so many of their songs are, this one is a masterpiece.

Let's try to embed the songs from youtube again too, like last year :). That worked out great during the playoffs when you could really hear and get a feel for each and every song.

I don't have any objection BUT it has to be in addition to the link to www.allmusic.com ... that part is mandatory or at least strongly requested for ease of solving any potential objections.

You see?! This is why I can't let The Who go quietly into the night in the last band standing thread. I mean, U2? Really?! I'm Irish and I think they're sugary pop rock ridiculous.

Well, at least D-Mass seems to recognize.

I do...but I had to drop out of that thread....it was aggravating me.

D-Mass wins! When the lights come up after the drum solo, Roger Daltrey lets out 'the scream,' and Pete Townhsend slides across the stage on his knees...if that ain't rock and roll, I don't know what is.

/thread ;) :D

P.S. Am I allowed to post comments in these drafts, or is that for participants only? If it's not allowed, feel free to delete this.

Edit: Removed the mention of the other song.

Funny... I didn't know that this was the iPOD Rock and Roll Draft... :p

... Even though that's exactly what it'll end up being... :(

(Although, I might have gone with XXXXXXXX, unless this is a 70's only game.)

Comments are encouraged, but it's not necessarily a good idea to mention a song that hasn't been picked yet, especially if there's someone else who might not have been thinking of that song, but now is, and ends up stealing it from someone who had been planning to take it all along.
